my teenaged son never learned to ride a bike. We attempted to teach him several times, but we could not get him to wear his helmet. No helmet, no ride. He outgrew the bike and we sold it. Since then, we tried to get him to learn on his older sister's bike, got him a new helmet, but he wouldn't wear it (he has sensory issues.) So, while I feel bad that he never learned this very basic skill that is a rite of childhood, there was no way I was going to let him ride without a helmet. my 3 year old has issues with wearing hats of any kind, and we were having issues with him and helmets. We had someone from our aba come and work with him on wearing the helmet but he still wouldn't wear it for his tricycle. However we went to a birthday party with pony rides and he wore a helmet with no complaints. I'm still hoping we can get him to ride a bike when he's older but he has some sensory issues as well. Like you said it seems like a childhood rite of passage to ride a bike, but i don't want him riding without a helmet!

Ski helmets save lives as well. Ds cracked his helmet & goggles while skiing. Both were worth their weight in gold. Oddly enough the zipper on his parka also broke. A friend's dd was coasting up to a vending machine at the bottom of the ski trail when she fell and hit the machine. She broke her nose & helmet, but not her head. dh was temporarily blinded for about 30 seconds when he had an accident snowboarding and has worn a helmet for that and been an advocate of helmets ever since . He said it was terrifying, he couldn't see a thing and thought to himself, "that's it, I'm blind now" but luckily he recovered right after. I've heard this story many times but can't remember if he had no helmet or if the helmet was on and protected him from a worse fate, but either way a helmet is essential!

So glad you are okay! My riding helmet has a nice scuff on it from one day when I had a fall. I can remember actually thinking on the way down how glad I was to be wearing one!

We taught our boys from the time they were very little to wear helmets when they are on wheels. Even when they were riding tricycles and push bikes, they had helmets on. Now they are 11 and 6 years old and are NEVER without helmets when they are outside. Bikes, scooters, pogo sticks anything like that...helmet on the head. DH used to work for a brain injury rehabilitation center and many of the residents who lived there were either in bicycle or motorcycle accidents and didn't have helmets on. DH's best friend was in a bicycle accident about 12 years ago. He slipped on gravel, ricocheted off a guard rail and slammed into a telephone poll. His helmet was literally cracked in half. Sadly he broke his back and is paralyzed from the chest down, but the helmet saved his life. He know is on a rowing team and rows competitively, he finished 4th place in the last summer Para-Olympics.

I'm glad you didn't suffer any major injuries. Thanks for the reminder about safety.

ER nurse here.... I cannot tell you how many times we see how effective a helmet can be....for cyclist, bikers, horse riders, rock climbers, etc.
Just wear one. Period. Your head is your most prized possession!

I don't wear one skiing..because somewhat I know the stats...head injuries in the sport have increased after more people started wearing helmets. fataliies are almost always young men 15-40 going too fast and out of control. and the number of people killed every year stays about the same...year in and year out. with helmets, experts think people are taking more risks...and going above their skill level. they take less personal responsibility cause they think a helmet should save them. and it doesn't.
I have skied for over 50 yrs and never hurt myself. I am not a risk taker. my 88 yr dad finally started wearing one..but he skis very fast on a big mountain and occasionally his balance is off. I would never do other sports like bike riding or horseback riding without a helmet.
