Please!
It started a few months ago and has gotten much, much worse over the last few weeks. I realized last night that it is THE WORST after I've been driving in my car with the AC on. I had to put it on today because I was out and it was over 100, but I had it blowing on my feet instead of in my face. I still got a horrible case of burning eyes.
I bought some Refresh lubricant and I can't imagine that I'll be able to wear my contacts any time soon (I wear them infrequently so it's not a huge deal).
Has anyone dealt with this? What has worked for you?

Yes, horrible dry eyes. I tried Restasis, that did not help. I had plugs inserted into my tear ducts, that helped a tiny bit. You have to use the refresh regularly. When they are really bad, my dr suggested a warm rice bag and that really does provide some very short term relief. See a doctor, if mine get too dry I am prone to infections.

What do you consider "regularly" with the Refresh? Is it multiple times a day?

Yes, up to 5 times during really dry periods. FYI I use Systane- whatever you use, make sure it's preservative free. There is also an OTC eye gel/ointment you can use at night.

I've tried Restasis but I could never get past the burning. I may end up on it again. My eyes got so dry I have damaged corneas that have affected my vision. My Dr has me on twice daily steroid drops, regular drops as often as needed. I like systene. Large dose of fish oil or flax seed oil and an otc ointment at night. And I'm not to sleep with a fan going as that is drying. It's been a couple of months and I'm starting to see improvment. But some days they still just burn.
You can't od on otc drops so use them a lot.

If your eyes are dry, you need to add drops on a regular basis. By the time your eyes feel dry, they're already too dry, like when you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated. You may need to try different eye drops till you find one that works. Your eye doctor may be able to give you some OTC samples. Drops are expensive!
A hot towel wrung out, rolled up, and then placed over the eyes helps. It is relaxing and may help open up clogged ducts. This might be the same as using the warm rice pack.
Take a few moments and blink slowly, hold your eyes shut for a few seconds. Some people don't close their eyes completely when they blink and that may contribute to dryness.

I will try something warm to see if it helps. I cry at the drop of a hat (peri-menopause) and I tear very easily so I'm really surprised this is a problem. I will also try some different drops. I just bought the Refresh today, I've tried Bion, and I guest Systane will be next. I was at the eye doctor about three weeks ago and told him but he didn't seem all that concerned. I do think the AC has really exacerbated it, so I'm hoping it's something that won't be bothering so much when the weather cools off.

Go for a check up. Dry eyes can be a symptom of several conditions. I use Optrex Actimist.

I use Restatsis- it does help. Also, Thera Tears Omega 3 capsules (fish oil)- I take 3 every night. I can tell if I skip a couple of nights. I've tried the Systane gel- just didn't stick with it. Also, I tried the warming mask- but again I didn't do it long enough to see any improvement. It's a battle!

My mom uses Eye Gel. (I think that's what it is called) and it works really well. I use it when I get allergies and it just lubricates your eye and feels great. I buy it for my son at Costco as he as really dry eyes.

Refresh makes a thick gel type drop that you can put in at night to help start the day off right

My husband has extremely dry eyes. He has tried all of the above including plugs, and none has really worked. The doctor just switched him to Bausch & Lomb Soothe Xtra Protection. Hubby has already noticed a difference. He uses it every night then uses the Bausch & Lomb Soothe Long Lasting drops multiple times during the day. Just thought I would give you another option.

I take tons of allergy medicine that makes my eyes dry. Before bed, I use Genteal Gel. When I wake up to hit snooze on my alarm, I use refresh liquigel. Before I put my contacts in, I wash off all gunk with warm water.

When I was having that issue, I mentioned it to my optometrist. He suggested Systane Balance and it did work. It worked well for DS as well.

While I don't have as severe a problem as you, my Opthalmologist recommended fish oil. I was a bit skeptical, but after taking it for about a month, it definitely made a difference. If I miss a few days I can tell. Hope you can find some relief from the good suggestions given in this thread.

So many good suggestions, I am on Restasis, also use eye drops regularly during the day, eye gel at night too. The worst culprit according to my eye dr. is ceiling fans on in the bedroom, I think this was also mentioned by someone. The dr. said we never fully have our eyes closed and the ceiling fans just dry our eyes out for hours all night long. Hope you get some relief soon.

TMI alert - I tried the Omega 3 capsules but they gave me pretty noticeable digestive issues. Does no one else have a problem with that? I am also using Restasis, gel eye drops and punctal plugs. After 2-3 months on the Restasis, I am finally getting some relief. Switching contact brands has helped me as well.

My dr told me the same thing and I told him that I couldn't sleep without my fan blasting! I'm looking for a very lightweight eye mask made from soft material that won't bother me- I'm a side sleeper.

Alexia, my Dr actually suggested a fan from Brookstone that fits at the end of the bed and goes between the sheets. It was not in our store, but we found it online. My DH uses it on his side of the bed, I'm the one that piles blankets on me. I did try using an eye mask with the ceiling fan, hard to get used to.

Another Systane fan. My husband has pain when he drives at night (his eye doctor said the new halogen lights are causing this for many people) and the night gel is really helping him.

Since this is the site it is, my mind automatically went to the gutter. ?. That is odd how you still dislike them yet crave them.

I do have a sensitive stomach- I take them right before I go to bed.

Yes,hot dry air and ceiling fan or A/C makes dry eye worse. There are so many types of eye drops, it is quite an individual choice as to what feels the best, you might have to try a few
I use GenTeal drops during the day. If particularly bad I will use Lacrilube ointment or GenResl Gel at night
A Warm Wet facecloth held over the eyes is very helpful,
There is a commercial product sold by Eyeeco.com. This is a goggle that you fill with a hot pad and a wet foam. This is a bit $$ but lasts longer than a wet facecloth and is comfortable enough to wear to bed.
There are multiple reasons to have a dry eye, including autoimmune issues, medications, and, sadly, just getting older.! one iif the most common autoimmune conditions is Sjögren's syndrome, which includes dry eyes, dry mouth, and joint pain. Often Dr's brush this off as not very serious, but it can have much wider reaching symptoms.
Hope this helps.

Go for a check up. Dry eyes can be a symptom of several conditions. I use Optrex Actimist. I agree. Get checked to be sure it's only dry eyes and not something more. I have dry eyes due to my Juvenile Arthritis. My body does not make quality tears. I use gel drops, Genteal brand.

My BFF here got plugs put in her eyes from RA and Sogren's. They fell out the first time, but the second time they stayed it. It helps her but that is pretty extreme I'd say.

Learned something new!
Here I am, reading this thread, thinking it is time to get out of bed and use some Genteal (I use the gel lubricant). The ceiling fan is on and my eyes feel dry. We sleep with the fans on all night in the summer. Explains a lot!
