I posted months ago about a weird bump on my wrist. General consensus was a ganglian cyst.
I was at my doctor for a physical at the end of April, and asked for a referral to have it removed. I hadn't heard yet, and assumed that maybe my kids had taken the message and not passed it on....
I noticed a month or so ago that it appeared to be getting smaller, and now it is pretty much gone.
And wouldn't you know, my doctor's office called Thursday with my referral appointment time!
She gave me the office info, and said it was just for a consultation.
So would you still go? (DH thinks I should)
Bump is completely gone, and I hate to waste the surgeon's time. But if it comes back, I'd like to be able to call the surgeon directly and say "hey it's back can we fix it now"
The appointment doesn't cost me anything, but it does cost the Provincial health care system, so I hate to waste resources if I don't have to.
********************************************************** ETA - I'm going to call tomorrow (today is a stat holiday here) and chat with the surgeon's office. It was on the thumb side of my wrist, and I was hesitant to have surgery as I am right handed and use my hands for work. So I'll call and chat with them and see what they think. Thanks for the advice!
*******************************
UPDATE
Finally had a day to call the office. I chatted with the receptionist - she agreed it should be cancelled. She let me know the referral is good for a year, so if it reappears to call back and re-schedule. And that he books up way in advance, so if it reappears to call right away instead of waiting.

My sister had one years ago, went away, never recurred. But I think they can. I would meet the surgeon to confirm that is what it was and find out what to do if it recurs. Also lets you check the guy out when it's not a crisis.

I would cancel. Think of a person on the waiting list & their opportunity to get an earlier appointment.
Glad that your cyst is gone.

DD has one. We were told that it could come and go and that if it was drained, it would most likely come back. So I would go just to have it on record.
DD's cyst is actually in an awkward area and the surgeon doesn't want to remove it unless it starts hurting her or compromises movement. For now, her wrist just looks especially knobby, as its on the outer part of her wrist.
It turns out it was a result of a hairline fracture in her wrist. She did competitive gymnastics when she was in elementary school. Talk about a bad mom--I had no idea and honestly don't remember any big injuries. She never stopped training for more than a day or two. I'm pretty sure of that.

If it's gone how would the specialist be able to confirm that it was a cyst or provide any info re the problem?

My first one went away on its own. Then I had 3 more. Two were surgically removed while the last one is still there. My Surgeon doesn't want to remove it until it is impeding function, which at this point it isn't. I would cancel the appointment because what is he going to consult over? He can't evaluate your wrist if it the bump isn't there.

How about calling the surgeon's office and asking how they would like you to handle it?

I would cancel. I wouldn't really see any point in going.
Since it is gone, there is nothing to be diagnosed, no treatment to be discussed. I would doubt the specialist would speculate about what they might do if it came back, without having seen it in the first place.
Keeping this appointment would not make it any easier or speedier to get in in the future 'if' it does recur, I wouldn't think. And the surgeon is still going to have to make an appointment to see it and decide for himself/herself what course of action to take, if any. I can't see them just booking you in to have to it removed.
To my mind it would seem a waste of both my time and the specialist's time. And yes, it seems a waste of health care resources, though if I felt that I 'needed' the appointment in any way, that would not be a consideration for me.
But I really don't see any upside to going at this time.

I would cancel. Sounds like it resolved on its own.

How about calling the surgeon's office and asking how they would like you to handle it? Yes I'm thinking call and explain what happened. If this is commonplace they will understand. And if it comes back I'm assuming the referral will be good for awhile?

I would cancel. It's a waste of you and the doctors time to show them something that isn't there anymore.

I am following the majority of the pack and saying cancel. I had one and before I could get in to have it looked at I slipped and fell and somehow that "broke" the cyst. The second time I had one in the same area and I went to the doc, he said he could drain it but it was likely it would disappear on its own AND it did. I stopped playing video games with my kids and never had another

I've had one on the top of my foot for over a year-comes and goes. I'm not going to do anything else about it until I can't wear shoes. Dr just told me to call back when I'm ready to have it removed. I would call, let them know, and leave the door open.

I would call them and ask what they wanted you to do, but I think going in would be a waste of everyone's time since it's not there now so there's nothing to treat.
