On the thread about how we eat our food, someone mentioned mixing together mashed potatoes, corn, and gravy when it was all on the plate at the same time. I like to do that, too (though I don't cook those together, but if I was at a buffet where they were both available). I also like to do it with peas and mashed potatoes. Or applesauce and porkchops. But my favorite is to mix my scrambled eggs with my grits and then crumble bacon into it (rare to eat that these days, though).
So what do you "mix"?

When I was a kid, I would mix my corn or peas in with my mashed potatoes. Then I didn't want gravy on them. I still will occasionally do it with corn.

I have to mix M&M's with popcorn when I go to the theater. Other than that, I do not like to mix foods together.

I don't like to mix my foods together very much, but I do like to eat baked beans and mayonnaise together. Can't stand baked beans on there own!

Ooooo. I forgot one. Grilled cheese sandwich dipped in apple sauce. I don't really like apple sauce but I love it with grilled cheese.

Nothing! I don't like my foods touching. I do love gravy, but I keep it separate and dip into it.

I don't eat either of these much anymore, but I used to LOVE mixing corn and mashed potatoes.
Now, one of my favs is refried beans and rice. YUM!

Stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy. Mixed all together. I like the softness, if I put corn in there, the crunch is not good to me.

I love fresh chopped tomato on top of grilled or sauteed zucchini. I like mixing bites of ethnic foods... like when we have curries with chutneys and raita. Or Mexican foods with refried beans, rice, salsa, guacamole, fresh vegetables, etc. My DH likes to pile food up on his plate and it really bothers me, so I've learned not to look at his plate when we're eating. I hate seeing a meal I've carefully prepared and made look nice, all mashed up and piled up and mixed together on his plate. Yuck.

We must be married to the same man. It's worst at pot lucks because there's way more stuff. All piled up. Makes me crazy too.

I don't like my foods to touch, sometimes this requires extra plates and bowls, but I'm ok with that.
When I was really young, 3 or so my Dad cooked dinner for us. It was always some conglomeration of veggies and sauce with chicken on top. His idea of healthy kid food. He had no idea of portion size and we would hide what we didn't eat under the plate and in our napkins. My brother and I were shocked when one day he told us to stop putting food under our plates. How did he know?

I'm a total food mixer, well not quite to the point of smashing ALL my food together on the plate...
but the rice/beans at a Mexican restaurant...and then scooped with a chip - yup
meatloaf and mashed potatoes become a mix on my plate
tuna loaf...mix that with rice and a touch of ketchup.
last weekend we had tri tip steak and mashed potatoes...can't smash it, but eat with a li'l bit of potato layered on each bite of steak... and of course the same with turkey and stuffing
the only thing I can't have on my food is syrup on pancakes...when it comes to that, I'm a 'dipper'..but only because pancake becomes to soggy.

I won't mix my food up on the plate, but I will put a bit of different components on my fork all at once. So I might have a bite of steak along with a fry and a piece of onion ring. Or a piece of gammon with fresh pineapple and some sweet corn. (Getting hungry now, thanks for that!)

This subject is just so strange to me.
For those of you who don't "mix" foods, do you avoid all manner of soups, salads, sandwiches, casseroles and stir fries ?
If not, in your mind, what's the difference ?

Funny the only thing I do like mixing is what you already mentioned; corn and mashed potatoes. Otherwise I don't like my foods to even touch each other and I often eat one thing at a time.

I like my rice and salad mixed. mmmm I think it's just to get the salad dressing on my rice! Yes, I grew up with pork chops always served w/applesauce. My kids (well the one who's not a vegetarian) NEED applesauce with pork chops.
