I agree with the posters who said do with it what you want, and don't bother giving her the receipts for her taxes. If she left it there when she moved out, then it's yours. I wouldn't return any of her deposit to her, either-- it's a huge pain for you to have to deal with her left-over stuff. It IS sad, that she obviously has an issue like this, but she made it your problem when she left you the stuff, and that's not cool.
my boyfriend's 50-something year old uncle is like this, but he gets his 'stuff' from the local dump: broken, cast-off stuff that other people are throwing away. He carts it home, thinking it might be worth something someday, or that he will fix it and I don't know, sell it? The only thing sad about the situation is that his 98-yr old mother has to live in the middle of it (she lives with him). That is tragic, considering how unsafe it is, and how frail her physical condition is.

There's no chance she was committing credit card fraud & was about to get busted & split?

Call any thrift store and they will come get the stuff that is new and sell it.
Please don't throw away things that someone might use/purchase.
Yes, some kind of mental illness is going on, I'm sure.

There's no chance she was committing credit card fraud & was about to get busted & split? This was my very first thought when I read the original post. I pictured Lorna from Orange Is The New Black (she orders all of those packages and keeps going to the PO to pick them up...) I'd feel weird keeping/using/selling the stuff. I don't exactly know what I'd do with it but something doesn't feel right to me. Who buys all of that stuff and then doesn't even open it!?

Now that I think about it, my aunt orders a ton of stuff from QVC and HSN. She fell ill about 3 years ago and we had to move her from Baton Rouge to my parents' home. Her apartment was... unbelievable. Definitely a hoarding situation. There were so many unopened boxes from QVC! And she still orders things all the time.
What is it with QVC? I wonder if it has something to do with the connection to the hosts?

my theory is she is a hoarder and compulsive shopper. the guilt got too much so she wanted a clean break. it was probably liberating for her to leave it all behind. it was also probably a good excuse to start shopping and hoarding again. the thing is, she made it clear she didn't want any of it. she is not doing you a favor, you are doing her a favor.

like a previous poster said, someone who's a compulsive shopper. I attended an estate sale that was FULL of clothes, purses, accessories, jewelry, etc. from HSN and QVC, and most of it was 1) really nice stuff- like the suede blazer I got for $8 on half-price day; and 2) still in the packaging. For some people, it's the 'thrill' of the hunt / buy, not whether they will actually use the stuff when they get it.

I think that is part of it. The hosts are their "friends" and hammer away about how awesome and amazing something is, and how it will make them happy and their life so much better.
FWIW, my husband - the UPS driver, lol - doesn't talk about people who get a lot of deliveries. He sees really obvious hoarding situations, and he talks about those. Oh, and the nekkie people who answer their doors. There are *a lot* of weirdos out there. HA!

I think it is sad. Perhaps gets herself into credit card debt? Maybe she has an obsession with the buying but not needing anything? Like how kleptomaniacs are?
I had left a few things at a rental property because I was young and stupid and I didn't have much space in my car to move. My landlord was pissed! He called me and thought it was pretty irresponsible and now he needs to take his time and resources to get rid of everything. I felt really bad. I wasn't in a great frame of mind at the time of the move and if I had more help, I would have just left it on the corner for free. I was overhelmed at the time, but we are talking like 4 things - bureaus, stereo, ironing board, roommates bicycle.
So that being said, whether the stuff is valuable or not, she left you with this "mess" to cleanup.

My sister took the job of CEO of a credit union. The woman she replaced apparently had a QVC addiction. The closet in her office was filled with new QVC merchandise, never out of the box. I don't remember what sister did with the items. ...TV recorder, kitchen stuff to jewelry
