Not the best photos. I'm calling this one Grey Goose. My original front is the 2nd photo and reflects the groom's style. After talking to the groom's mom and sisters, I got a bit better sense of the bride's style, which is very colorful and whimsical, so I ended up making it a reversible quilt-- his and hers. My efforts with the mini geese on the colorful side did not make me happy in terms of precision of piecing, and some of my vision for the quilting detail was diluted by the reality of what I can do on my machine. Still, overall I'm happy with it and have sent it off.

I love it! I think handmade items get a bad rap because the giver makes them in their style rather than the recipient's style.

It's beautiful, especially the bride's side and all that quilting!
I don't recall the quilt debate, but I personally love quilts. My grandmother was a prolific quilter - all hand stitched, many of the fabrics recycled from clothing. Everyone in our family has received a lovingly created quilt from her, and I only know of one person that hasn't cherished theirs (it's on the floor and the dogs have destroyed it). Now that grandma is gone, the quilts mean even more to me.

Wow. If you made that for me, I would love you forever. How long did that take you to make?

I love your quilts! And I would have been over the moon to receive one as a wedding gift… I don't know who disapproved of the idea, that clearly they did not know your work.

GORGEOUS!!! Personally, I would have LOVED to receive something like this. To the point that, those aren't my colors, but if someone had MADE that for me, I might have rethought my colors for a bedroom, so that it could be displayed all the time. But at the very least, it would be a throw option for the cooler months, on our couch. Well done. You sound a bit like my Mom, she is a perfectionist with her sewing projects, but in all honesty, most people do not notice something that she considers a flaw. I'm betting the things you are not happy with, are things that 99% of people wouldn't notice.
Great work again. You are very talented.

Thanks, all. I could have phrased it as "50% said go for it". I'm well aware that not everyone loves hand made items, and not having met the bride (despite being good friends of longstanding with the groom) it felt a little awkward and potentially fraught with negativity to make a quilt. When I put the question before the pea people, the issues were well outlined, and after thinking it through, I decided to go ahead and make it even knowing it may not be appreciated as much as a $50 pottery barn gift card.
I don't know exactly how long it took to make, as I work in short increments of time. The piecing of the top was easy. The back was easy. Melding them into one quilt was a bit of a trial and error process. I opted to do a ton of free motion quilting (if you click on the photos you can see more detail), and because it was reversible, I quilted from either side, which was a new approach for me, and unfortunately I had to do a little bit of ripping out. I also opted to do a flanged edge on the grey side which was more time consuming. Maybe 12 hours? Possibly a bit more.

If they are not thrilled to receive a beautiful, hand made quilt, they're very hard to please.

It sounds like at least you did some homework to figure out the recipient's style and tastes. I received a crochet blanket that was dark brown and black with some orange accent (in 1994 not 1970's). I strongly dislike all those colors (and my DH didn't have favorite colors so this wasn't made for him in mind). I felt bad and guilty that I couldn't "like" and "enjoy" the gift more.

I think it's great! My sister made one for my wedding. She asked for my feedback on pattern and colors. It's on our bed being used.

I love the fact that you made it reversible! What a great idea especially with a quilt for two different people..... (I was on the YES side)
