I swear I'm dying!
I have been drinking large quantities of diet coke for 20 plus year. I would drink a min of 32 oz a day and up to 72 oz some days.
Last year I tried going to 1 can a day but even that was tough. I figured it was going to be a cold turkey sort of thing and yesterday was day 1. Today I'm dying!!!
I'm going through withdrawals and I honestly didn't think it would be like this. It's so bad a co worker just asked if I was sick.
I keep saying if I can get to day 5 this will all go away. Please tell me that's true!

Have a glass of sweet black iced tea. It will take care of the caffeine issue and give you some sugar.
Or, get a bottle of fizzy water. Flavor with citrus or fruit juice.
Replace, replace, replace.
Stay strong!

I went off of Pepsi years ago. I had a can with me all of the time. I very seldom drank water.
Here's what I did......I was living with my now dh and yes it was Pepsi, not caffeine free. I quit drinking it. I had issues and my bf (now dh) would get me shots of pepsi. So, I'd have a little bit, then we'd dump the rest of the can. Dumping was done immediately after I poured a little bit.
It worked. It took awhile, maybe a couple of weeks to fully get away from it. Now, I cannot have pop that isn't decaffeinated. If I do within 15 minutes I have a full blown migraine.
It takes time. The other thing you could do is water down the pop with water. That may give you the boost you need, but ease you off of it.

Can you try plain seltzer? Do you still drink caffeine? Are you suffering a double whammy withdrawal?
I rarely drink soda nowadays, maybe 3 glasses in a year, but you know what? I was craving a little Dr. Pepper as I went down the soda aisle today! Crazy!
Sending you strength to get through this to your goal!

I think I posted here cause I need the accountability. I have a can in the frig and I just went and poured it out cause it's too tempting.
I don't like tea so that's out for a replacement. I never have tried spritzer waters - may have to look into it.
Still drinking coffee in the morning and just made me a cup to help with the withdrawals. I think I will do that in the afternoon just for extra help.
I'm drinking a ton of water - maybe I will pop an advil too.
I know I will be better off once I do this but right now it really does suck.

this is how I know how addicted I am. I tried to stop two weeks ago and although the first day was almost okay, the migraine from the second day was so strong that I thought I was going to vomit. I broke down and took 2 Tylenols and had a can of diet Pepsi. it may have been too far gone for the Tylenols but the Pepsi took some of the edge off.

You can do it, keep going!!! I am on day 4 of no caffeine. So no more soda and no more coffee. Today I had a migraine. I actually had to lay down with a pillow smashed over my eyes for a few hours because I couldn't stand the light. But I think the headache was actually from ovulation, not caffeine withdrawals. The withdrawal headaches from the past few days haven't been that intense.

Those of you with migraines.....that's what I had. Cut back or water down or both. You are having withdrawals. It's scary to think that something is that powerful. If you start with a headache try just a swig of pop. See how long that lasts. It won't last too long to start with but as time goes on it does get better.
I don't drink coffee. I never have. I'm now a water drinker and maybe 1 can of diet decaffeinated rootbeer a day. I really don't crave nor want pop.

I've been doing that to avoid the migraines. just a 1/2 cup of soda and mostly ice. that seems to be enough to keep the headache at bay while lowering my caffeine intake.

Chocolate has caffeine in it, doesn't it? What about a piece of dark chocolate for that little boost?
I couldn't give it up... I bought a Soda Stream and will have that with some Crystal Light or Skinny Girl... Helped me get over the caffeine...

Take one excedrin. It has caffeine in it so it will take care of the headache and the dose is small enough to help you wean off without drinking soda.

Why nt taper off? When I quit coffee cold turkey when I was pregnant, I had to go to the doctor for a terrible headache. I told him about qutting coffee and he said "thats your problem,...have a damn cup of coffee. Dont suffer, just taper off". So thats what I did.

Having some coffee should help with the caffeine withdrawls.
I gave up diet pop about 2 years ago. You just have to hang in there, it will get better.

How much pop is 32 oz? Is that 4 cans? That's a lot of anything to drink a day. I drink at least 3 water bottles a day of water (filtered and kept in the fridge) and I thought that was a lot !

It gets better. I gave up Coke Zero about a month ago. The first few days were the worst. I wanted to get off artificial sweeteners more than anything so I am drinking iced tea. Mostly unsweetened, but a small amount of sugar. Good luck!! Stay strong!!

I went mostly off soda this year - I replaced by drinking a lot of green tea. The diet citrus type. It certainly made it easier for me.

I gave up Dr Pepper about ten years ago. I easily drank a 6 pack plus each day. I could get the caffeine from an Exderine, but I loved the sweet drink. So, I started drinking glasses of Crystal Light Fruit Punch. I probably drank a pitcher a day, but it worked. Now if I try to drink a can of pop, it tastes like cough syrup.
You can do it!! Hang in there!!

You can do it! I know you can-just stick with it, day by day. I did it cold turkey about 3 years ago. I drank Diet Coke too, and decided to give it up. I did keep drinking my morning coffee and sometimes I would have a second cup during the day if I needed it. Those cravings do go away. Truly they do.
Think about this-if your body is reacting so violently now-what in the world must be in that stuff to make it act this way? It's almost like a drug, isn't it? Maybe researching articles about what's in Diet Coke, what it does to your body, and so on will help encourage you to stay strong and make it!
I lost my cravings about in about 2 weeks. I substituted with ice cold water, just water and other than that I just had coffee. I think this is the best way to quit permanently. Now I crave water, and can't stand Diet Coke or soda. It tastes sickeningly sweet and flat, the one time I tried a sip of it. I do crave ice cold water.
Best of luck, you can do it!

I stopped drinking soda about 16 years ago. I did it gradually. I don't think I could have gone cold turkey. Say you drink 3 cans of soda a day. Just drink 2 the next two days. Then drink 1 the next 3 days. Then try going without. Maybe you'll need to go slower then that. 2 cans for a week, 1 can for a week, then none. Hopefully over those weeks the changes that you notice will give you the motivation that you need to quit. Good luck!

I didn't know if you meant diet or regular soda, but I ran across this article this morning and thought of this thread - hope it helps someone. I quit in 2011 - I was drinking 5-6 Coke Zeros a day. I cut back for a few days, then quit altogether. I drank coffee - decaf if anytime after lunch - in place of the Cokes, and had a small treat with it - cookies, chocolate, etc. for a couple of weeks, gradually weaning off of that. Hope this helps someone - How I Overcame a Bad Habit and Learned to Enjoy My Life

I easily drank 3-5 duet cokes a day until spring of 2014. I ended up stopping accidentally and after a few days I made a decision not to go back to it.
One thing that helped was always having water on hand-I had bottles of water or cups with straws all the time. Also after a month or so I allowed myself to try sodas with no HFCs or caffeine because I needed a flavor that was not just water. I enjoy a San pellegrino orange soda every now and then but do not need them like I did my DC. When we eat out I usually have lemonade or sometimes ginger ale since it tastes very different from coke or diet coke.
Good luck!

You can do it! I gave up all sodas about a year and a half ago and I don't regret it one bit. I didn't realize how bad the sodas made me feel especially diet ones. Keep up the good work!

You can do it!!
In January of this year I quit Diet Pepsi cold turkey I was drinking 2 or more cans a day of it.
I haven't had one relapse and have been DP free for 8 months. I don't miss it at all.
Just take it one day at a time, you've got this!
