expect hamburgers and hotdogs? We are having several couples over and I just don't feel like doing hamburgers. I was thinking of doing hotdogs (Omaha Steak hotdogs, which my sister said are excellent) and brats.
Would you think that the hostess was lazy? Would you dislike that hamburgers aren't being served?
I'm going to serve cheesy potatoes, a fruit salad and probably corn on the cob along with the hotdogs and brats.
Also - what "sides" should I get for the hotdogs and brats? I usually just do ketchup, mustard, relish and tomatoes. I guess I should get some sauerkraut?
Any other suggestions for sides? Thanks.
UPDATE: I've decided that I need to serve another protein per your responses. As suggested I'll get the Omaha Steak burgers - possible filet mignon if they are on sale since it's a small crowd. In my circle a BBQ means burgers, etc. I'm not worried about the wording of my invitation - they know I'm throwing something on the grill. Thanks for all of the suggestions and opinions.

A "bbq" here would have any combination of hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken or tri tip. I would not like going to a bbq that only had hot dogs but that's because I hate hot dogs and won't eat them. ETA: I see you mentioned also doing brats. I don't eat sausage either. I have weird issues with some processed meats and I just can't bring myself to eat much of them even if they do taste good. Maybe I'm not the best person to answer this thread LOL.

Homemade hotdog chili. I've been to several cookouts where only hotdogs and brats were served. How about coleslaw and baked beans? Deviled eggs or potato salad?

I wouldn't think you were lazy, but I hate beef hotdogs and brats. I'd bring my own Oscar Mayer cheese dogs Maybe have some chili and cheese available and make it a hot dog bar? Chips and dip too?

Cook from frozen.

I would say it could be anything. I went to a BBQ that had pulled pork as the main dish and lots of sides. No hot dogs. No hamburgers. I will admit I was disappointed (not a fan of pulled pork) but I did not pass judgement on the hosts.

Yep, hot dogs are one of those dishes that are hated by many or not eaten by many. I would not think you lazy, but would wish there was an meat option other than hot dogs or brats. How about some ham slices, perhaps chicken breasts?

I wouldn't think you were lazy - I'd be glad you were hosting and not me! As long as you have a non-pork option (which you do) my family would be thrilled with brats and hotdogs. I would prefer good hotdogs/brats than cheap frozen hamburger patties.
I would definitely do the sauerkraut. I would also be looking for some veggies to round out my meal - even just a cold veggie tray would be a nice addition.

I don't like any ground or processed meat. Depending on my mood & what they looked like, I might try a brat, lol. I know I'm picky but I would prefer chicken. That being said I could make a meal of cheesy potatoes. I wouldn't think the hostess was lazy. Maybe do some baked beans or deviled eggs.

I can't eat pork due to health reason and I do not eat hot dogs (even if they are beef only), so I would eat the sides only. I would never make an issue out of it. I might be disappointed that burgers weren't being served but I don't think that they have to be served at a BBQ.

Another hot dog, brat hater here. My dh makes brats with grilled onions and red/green peppers. They smell good, but I don't eat meat so I haven't tried them.

I wouldn't have any particular expectations, although most people don't serve only hot dogs. If you had brats and dogs that would be fine in our circles, but I would make sure I had some macaroni salad or potato salad for those who don't like any sausage at all. (I could totally make a meal out of potato or Mac salad!)

If being invited to your house for dinner means that gets me out of coming up with a dinner idea and cooking, I would love anything you served!

Eh. I would expect more choices then just hotdogs. How about chicken? Why don't you "feel" like doing hamburgers??

Other sides that would be great - chili, cheese, fried onions.
I would also have grilled chicken or hamburger or steak for those that don't like dogs or brats.

I'm not a hamburger fan unless they are made by my DH but I love brats. I'd be grateful for anything you served though

They are messy to grill, take up too much room on the grill and too many condiments. Also, my dh is a horrible griller, so I would be standing at the grill.
That being said, I think I'm going to do burgers. It's only 8 people so I should be fine. I'll do the burgers and good all beef hotdogs and skip the brats. Not sure if I want to serve chili - we do need to spend the rest of the evening with them.

I can't eat hot dogs or brats because I can't have the preservative in them. It gives me migraines. So I can't come to your BBQ unless you make chicken or some other thing besides a preserved meat.
ETA: I guess I can come. But I'll just eat the sides.

DH is the only person in our family that eats hot dogs or brats. The weirdo actually prefers cheap wieners to the Angus beef hot dogs, because that's what he grew up on. The rest of us can't stand the smell or the texture. Hamburgers or chicken (no extra condiments needed), and hot dogs sounds better to me, than hot dogs and brats. Have a nice evening with your friends.

We usually do hamburgers, brats and hot dogs for the kids when we host bigger BBQs along with a variety of sides. I think it's fine to just have brats and hotdogs for the entreé if that's what you want to do. You're offering people a free meal. They can either eat it or not. One year for DD's birthday we hosted a BBQ where we had hamburgers, turkey burgers for the person who wouldn't eat beef, veggie burgers for the person who wouldn't eat meat, brats for the people who didn't want burgers (gluten and MSG free), and hot dogs for the kids--and some of them complained because the hot dogs had "grill marks" on them! Really?

Forget grilling the hot dogs. Set up fire pit or get one of those small table top charcoal grill and let people cook their own hot dogs.
I buy brats, cheese dogs, turkey dogs and veggie dogs

I wouldn't think you were lazy (it just wouldn't occur to me that a hostess who invited people into her home would be lazy!) but I'm not a hot dog fan. I would, however, assume there would be something other than hot dogs if it were being called a BBQ.

If being invited to your house for dinner means that gets me out of coming up with a dinner idea and cooking, I would love anything you served! Ditto. Anytime I am invited to another's home and there is something I don't eat, I just choose something else. It is not up to me to choose my hostesses menu.

It may be a regional thing, but if I were invited to a bbq I would expect something with bbq on it: chicken, ribs, pulled pork. Now, for a cookout, I would expected hot dogs, burgers, etc, but sausages and brauts wouldn't be shocking. I agree with many above, hot dogs are not warmly embraced by some, so I would have variety with at least one other meat item.
Oh, I forgot to add, I would include diced onions, diced red and green peppers, and sliced cheese. Cheese makes almost any hot dog, sausage, braut, or burger better.

I would make what you want. Goodness, there are some picky people out there. Chances are pretty good that they will either love you for making dinner or they will just eat sides. Either way, I'd go for the company of good friends.
