I leave flour, sugar and pancake mix in their original containers and put them inside gallon plastic zipper bags.

Kymberlee, I got everything from amazon.com but I know Bed Bath & Beyond has them too but they are more expensive. I will link the plastic bins below. I personally do not like to put my flour and things in glass jars. My mother has hers that way and it drives me crazy when I cook at her house but it's her house and what she loves. But it taught me that I do not like it. I just like a few organizational pieces with the cute chalkboard labels (that I got at Wal-Mart); otherwise, everything stays in their original packaging. This is just one of the bins I purchased. I have several different sizes. Hope this helps. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003E1OAQC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01

I love using Lock-n-Lock containers for my flour etc. They have a flip lid. Now to convince them to make small containers for spices!

I agree with the OXO containers with the pop lid. Those are great - I use them for various sugars, flour. I also found it hard to keep my extracts and food colorings organized so I have an OXO with all of those little bottles in there. Keeps it easy to locate and keeps the pantry organized. Why did I never think to put my extracts and food coloring in OXO containers? Brilliant. I am SO doing this.

I made up some baskets for things I make often. I have a complete set of chocolate chip cookie ingredients in one basket, cake decorating stuff in one basket, coffee and filters in another.
My son has a basket of his favorites (pancake mix, mac and cheese, ramen noodles), and the cats and dog have their own.
Patter -- your pantry is just the way I'd love mine to work, but it would end up looking like a hot mess after a week or two in my house.

I am very diligent to make sure if I see that someone has put something in the wrong place or messed something up to fix it right away. I would rather do that than clean it again. It took me a bit to get it like this, and believe me, I want it to stay that way!!! The kids will all be off to college next weekend so it's only trying to keep hubby in line after that. And he is the thoughest one. LOL!

I'd start by thinking about how you and your family look for things. For instance, a lot of people like all cans together regardless of what they are. But when I open my pantry I think I want a vegetable, or I want a soup, etc. So, if I kept canned vegetables or soups they would be separate. For we have shelves (or 1/2 shelves) of the following categories and sometimes baskets separating things further
Breakfast (basket powders & such DH's smoothie) Snacks (nuts basket) Baking (small baskets for reactive ingredients, flavor ingredients, tools, etc) Carbs (rice, bread, noodles) Cleaning shelf (rags basket, steam mop basket, everyday supplies basket, deep clean supplies basket) Consumables (paper towels, plastic ware, napkins) and duplicate items Drinks (basket for teas, etc) Misc.
Especially on top shelves that are hard to reach, I like baskets so I can pull down to see what I like.
We use Elfa shelves from The Container Store and they have a set of labels that attach. Love them! We also have all of our spices, vinegars, oils, etc) on their door basket system. Both are great because they are easy to customize.

I use boxes to organize a lot of my kitchen and bath cupboards. Not the big apple boxes or moving boxes, but smaller ones. I have some sitting on their bottoms and some sitting on their sides. Free is my favorite price!
