I do both but I'm pretty slow no matter what. Normally I do my own thing based on the photos I want to scrap, but I have also used sketches in the past. I have tons of ideas and I come up with nice pages but it takes me for.ever! Especially if I'm not scrapping at home and don't have all of my stuff right there. I recently bought a few more SG sketch books that I hope to put to good use this fall, and I hope it helps to speed me up a little. My biggest issue has been finding what I want to use in my messy hoard of boxes of stuff. Now that my studio is getting closer to being organized and my junk is for the most part sorted out, I'll be able to scrap at home and actually get something done without being distracted by the mess or having to spend all of my time looking through 15 different boxes to find the one thing I want that I knew I had--somewhere! And when you are done, I'm coming over for a scrap party!! That would be awesome! That's been my #1 goal all along this (seemingly endless!) process of building my studio, to create a fun gathering place to hang out and work on stuff with my friends and/or my kid.

I am a slow scrapper overall, but I pretty much start from sketches or scraplift from other people's page designs. I usually change something about my pages so they hardly ever end up exactly the same as the starting point, but it takes way too much time for me to come up with a page design on my own from scratch. My inspirations include:
1) purchased sketchbooks; I use the sketches as-is, just changing up the # and/or size of the photos -- I have a number of books from Scrapbook Generation
2) sketches from Pinterest or various websites -- Shimelle, October Afternoon, Page Maps, etc.
3) layouts I've pinned solely for the page background paper arrangement (example: PP strips across the page + a large triangle) -- I arrange my photos however they look best on the background papers
4) layouts I've pinned solely for the photo arrangement -- I make up my own page background design but copy the photo arrangement
I always have way more photos than I can ever hope to scrap, so in general I can choose the best ones, or have a number of ones I can choose from the fit the sketch or layout I have in mind.
And no matter how quickly the pages come together, I usually end up taking a lot of time with the details-- buttons always have to have twine bows in, or I add sequins, enamel dots, hand-stitching, inking edges, embellishment clusters, etc.; anything I can do to speed up the overall process is good in my book.

I'm a grumpy digi-scrapper. I don't use sketches or templates, and don't scraplift. If I'm looking for design inspiration, I occasionally turn to print ads, movie posters, other graphic design or 3D influences, I don't want my layouts to look like scrapbook layouts. I Often scraplift myself!

I mostly scrap lift and use sketches. A lot of times they don't turn out the same but it helps me get a start. I love using pinterest for inspiration.

I also really struggle to scraplift or follow a sketch. I have tried it for challenges and find it frustrating. I do believe that I am influenced by others though. I think it is hard not to be. I am not sure how long it takes me to complete something though because I rarely sit down and do something from start to finish. I work in bits and pieces of time.

I generally can't get what is in my head out onto the paper. I find if I start with something from Pinterest I will get a whole much more creative. I was always frustrated before trying to be so original. But now I look at something adapt the supplies to what I have and generally looks nothing like what I started with but I actually create which just makes me happy.

I thought sketches were great at first. Got the Becky Higgins books. Never used them. Then, because I hadn't learned anything apparently, I got some of those Scrapbook Generations books. Yea. They just sit there unused as well. It is just hard for me to fit into someone else's layout. I seem to have 3 page styles that I do over and over again, and I'm pretty much okay with that. Another thing about using sketches or other layouts to scraplift is that I would have to use time to find one to fit. Basically, I'm just a sit down and start cutting and gluing kind of scrapper. The only things I want to spend time looking for are paper and maybe some embellishments.
I do like to scraplift for fun sometimes. Usually during challenges or because I saw an idea that I liked. Then I'm not really concerned about the photos or the story I want to tell so much, as it is about scrapbooking for fun, kwim?
Another occasion where I'm really apt to go looking to see what other people are doing is when I get a new paper collection, especially if it is really different for some reason.

scrappington, you nailed it!! that is exactly how I feel... trying to be 'creative-from-scratch' on a SB page is just paralyzing to me. I can do it in my art journals, but NOT on my SB pages, or with cards.

Once in a while, I have an idea for a page or card before I start, but usually I need to start with some inspiration.
