I've taken him to the vet twice for this in 2 weeks. First time, vet said it was nothing, he probably got something in it. So I wait another week or so and take him back. This time he says allergies and tells me benadryl and eye drops (over the counter stuff) will help. If it was allergies wouldn't it be in both eyes? I'm frustrated. He's not an outside dog, but gets walked at night and we play ball and chase in the yard. Any ideas? I do have 2 cats but the vet said he didn't see any scratches or anything in his cornea so it can't be that. Like I said, it's just one eye and he rubs it with his paw. I'm considering taking him to another vet but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this. FTR: He's a bichpoo. Thanks! UPDATE: So I took him to another vet on Tuesday. They stained his eye, no scratch! She took his temp, no temp! So she gave me a small tube on antibiotic cream to place in his eye 3 times a day. Worked like a charm! 2 days later and his eye looks so much better!! She wasn't sure what it was but something was definitely irritating it but she said she didn't think it was allergies. Anyway...happy pup! Glad I took him in for a 2nd opinion. Thanks for all the advice!

Did your vet test for an infection?

Did your vet test for an infection? No. He said everything looked fine (just looked while I held his head). Both times I brought him in.

My terrier had a weird eye thing when he was a puppy. It took three vet visits before one figured out he had eyelashes growing on the *inside* of his eyelid! $1100 in vet bills later, the vet at the U plucked them out. He's 14 now and they've never grown back.

Our regular vet never even thought to look for that because it's a pretty rare occurrence, so the antibiotic ointment she gave us only compounded the problem. It's worth a check anyway!

The vet can stain the cornea and look for scratches. It takes a few minutes and shouldn't be pricey.
I had a cat with entropions as well. $$!
Do you have some saline solution around because you have a contact wearer in your house? You could give it a good rinse with that.

I second getting another vet.
But...I have allergies and often only one eye is affected.

Yeah I did that when I first saw him squinting and his grooomer did it again for me later that day when she groomed him. Now I'm using visine allergy drops to see if that helps (per Vet suggestion). I'll call a different vet tomorrow for a 2nd opinion. Thanks everyone!

YEs allergies can be only in one eye. And it will take the rest of the season to get it under control. Gadget has an eye that he has issues with from March to November. I have to use artificial tears for his eye. He gets green goo in it every morning and I have to wash it out with the artificial tears. We have been doing this for years. He used to live on beneril but we stopped that because it was making him sleep 24/7. If he gets really bad I give it to him but most of the time the eye drops work.

Just as an aside I had an eye doctor once that totally hated Visine eye drops of any kind. He said why but I don't remember. Maybe try a different brand of allergy eye drops. I hope you get it figured out soon.

I have allergies and quite often, it is only just one eye that itches!!! So I would imagine that it could happen to dogs too!
It is quote possible that one eye was irritated by something--debris, scratched, allergy or other. I'd be worried if it went on for a month or more if he's not exhibiting other reactions or symptoms

My dog has a skin condition that looks like allergies and it only effects one eye. I would go to another vet just for the peace of mind.

My cat had eye ulcers a few months ago, and that caused him to keep his closed as well. The vet put some kind of dye in his eye, to see under ultraviolet light and that's what he saw. We did several weeks of antibiotics and drops to get them to heal. Mine are all indoor as well, so I knew it was something unusual for him to be squinting like that.
ETA: Staining, thank you Nicole, that was the technical term I was looking for. I, too, thought it was allergies and did the saline solution, but after a few days of not getting better, we took him in.

I would get a second opinion. My dog has had various eye issues, and the rule of thumb seems to be that if they're rubbing their eye it should be checked.

I hope you get it figured out soon. Most eye doctors have a strong preference for preservative-free eye drops. Visine usually has preservatives. And stay far away from eye drops whose purpose is to "keep the red out," because they have vasocontrictors.

My Boo Radley had a corneal abrasion (one in each eye), so I have had a LOT of experience with them. You cannot necessarily see an abrasion with the naked eye. They use a stain drop in the eye to make it visible. I would ask for that test, especially in light of the fact that your have cats.

Yeah he never stained. He looked at it from maybe 6-8 inches away. Without a light. I thought it was so odd. I've had a scratched cornea and they hurt like crazy! Sensitive to light and all that stuff so that was my immediate thought. I'll definitely have another vet take a peek at him. HOPEFULLY it is just allergies but I'll be super upset if it's something else and my vet didn't diagnose properly.
I use the Visine-A (for allergy drops) but just a drop here and there when he seems especially irritated by it.

As I understand it (from a recent episode where my dog scratched her cornea) they need to do the stain to see if there is an abrasion or ulcer. It also changes the way they treat.
