So what do you do when you can't take hormones? I am seriously worried about this, as I am still in perimenopause and I am a raving lunatic sometimes. It is probably going to be all the time soon. And I have no clue what to do if I can't take HRT. I don't know what other options are out there. Hopefully someone with experience can answer your question. Best of luck to you! This really sucks! And I have no clue what to do if I can't take HRT. I can ask a dr, but I don't have a regular one and we are moving, yet again, next month. So if you have managed symptoms or gone through this and not taken/not been able to take HRT, can you tell me about that? This is getting me a bit worried. No hormones has never been a big deal or interfered in my life past "gee your acne could be treated with BCP but that's not an option" as a teen. But this is a pretty big quality of life issue looming and I am getting freaked out! I can't take hormones either due to my migraines. I take Evening Primrose Oil and it has really helped. I had horrible hot flashes and it's cut them down to where I can barely feel them. Make sure you get a good quality brand. My sister gave me my first bottle and it's from a brand called, "Metabolic Maintenance". It says, "Evening Primrose Oil 500 mg. 180 Soft gels". We see an Integrative Medicine doctor and that's where she got these, but you can probably find them online. I'm still on my first bottle. This is all I take. Debbie in MD.

But this is a pretty big quality of life issue looming and I am getting freaked out! ^^^ I can't take hormone replacements either, since I had a stroke a number of years ago... my gyn oncologist (also had an ovarian tumor; that's why I had my ovaries removed) suggested Estroven, which is a plant-based supplement that a number of other people on this thread have also mentioned. I had a few hot flashes, but they weren't bad-- once I started taking the Estroven they disappeared. If I get hormonal, it may get muddled up with the depression symptoms (and same with the loss of libido- the depression probably negatively affects that, as well). Delta Dawn, my ovarian tumor was found during my hysterectomy surgery (the doctor thought it was a cyst so removed it and sent it for testing), and it was found early enough that I didn't need chemo. I mention this because the type of ovarian cancer I had was NOT the typical type, and although I do get tested for CA125 regularly, the type of cancer I had wouldn't show in these test results. They test the levels to keep an eye on it for any spikes, but the more important thing is getting regular physical checks form my oncologist and just 'how I feel' rather than anything else. So if the ovarian cancer in your family is the hereditary type, I would definitely say get the testing. The symptoms of this cancer are just so vague... if my doctor hadn't found my tumor during my surgery, who knows how large it might have gotten before we learned about it.

Debbie, I didn't even consider the migraine - hormone connection. I've had my migraines under control for the past couple of years but lately I've been feeling like a migraine is coming on: extra sensitivity to light and noise, pressure behind my eyes, and light stomach upset. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. Hormone fluctuation has been a huge migraine trigger for me! Thanks for the suggestions. I'll talk to my pharmacist. Jo

Yes, it's a problem. Not just because of the inability to take HRT, but because the hormone fluctuations occurring during menopause brings the migraines back again. I had to go back to taking a preventive for my migraines that I'd been able to stop taking before menopause started. That has helped quite a bit. Today I'm picking up a Magnesium supplement from my Integrative Medicine doctor that I'll be taking daily to see if that helps me even more, since they've (the migraines) have been getting more active recently. The only good part in all of this is that my grandmother who I inherited my migraines from told me that once she finished menopause her migraines disappeared.I'm very much hoping that will be true for me too. Seems likely since it is so much a hormone connection. Debbie in MD.

I stopped taking Topamax for migraines because it caused me to have kidney stones. I might have to ask about using it again because a migraine on top of the moodiness is more than I can bear!
