It's not fair to think that everyone in Texas is a idiot like this judge. I happen to know a wonderful person who lives in Texas. conchita is awesome and smart and lives in Texas. The vast majority of Texans are nice, reasonable people. But everything is bigger in Texas, including idiocy. We like to separate the biggest idiots from the general population by electing and appointing them to public office. Merge, I think you hit the nail on the head. Sad, but true.

This is certainly one of the more bizarre stories I have read recently.

What if he'd said no? "Sorry honey, I'd rather go to jail than marry you." Crazy stuff... Seems like he did say no initially. “He offered me fifteen days in jail and that would have been fine and I asked if I could call my job [to let them know],” said Bundy. “The judge told me ‘nope, that’s not how this works.’” That sucks. I'd be embarrassed if I was her.

Grounds for an annulment due to coercion? I was wondering the same thing. And do they still give young people the choice between jail and the military? I remember when that used to happen. I don't think so. I believe you have to have a clean record and a high school diploma or GED to join the military.

I could not believe this was real, so did a search and the story is in many of the major news sources. Unbelievable. I can understand why they went through with it. It cost money to buck the system even when the system is so screwed. Also, it looked like his job might have been on the line with him not be allowed to call his boss.

Oh wait, I know! We need to get some folks to start to argue that being married is cruel and unusual punishment.

Texas, huh. Yup. Texas. It is EAST Texas--those folks are a whole different breed. (not that the rest of us don't have our problems!)

Maybe they can get it annulled..Thereby meeting the judge's requirement and the common decency requirement.

That is the most bizarre "sentence" I've ever heard of.
