Did you manage to withhold the almost obligatory "I TOLD you so........." ? Withhold it? Shoot. That's one of the best parts of being a parent some days. Oh, yes, it is a really excellent part of parenting. My kids hate it. I told each of them, "If you don't like hearing me say it, then don't give me the opportunity."

I feel bad for your son but is it wrong that I'm almost giddy for you because of the coveted moment of "I told you so."
Yes like others I am truly thrilled when DD gets those life lessons handed to her from someone else. She had a 5k race to get ready for and did nothing to prepare, (despite my repeated weekly reminder) thinkking taking a month off since track was ok - then I had to have her picked up by race staff because she collapsed/sick:pain. After assuring she was ok I'll admit days later I was like hello? Have you learned?

I don't think you have to make appointments here to get the drivers teat, but I don't know. I think they'll cover that in drivers ed or well research it then No, you just get to wait. My son got it all done and he went up to the camera for the final step. The computers went down for 45 minutes and they decided to close the DMV. He was there at 2:45 and this was now almost six. The lady told me just to show up at eight the next morning and he could go first. I mentioned that I worked. Thankfully the next day he went to the front of the line and we were out in about twenty minutes. I can tell you there were about 100 pissed off people that didn't understand the situation and were audibly voicing their opinions. Yikes! My friend had suggested that we drive to Pueblo (30 minutes) and it would go faster. I should have listened.

I need to remember to use this.

We watch the show every evening when we eat and I just look at my husband and we nod.

Yep. In most places you have to schedule at least a month in advance. Grrrr! He can chalk it up to experience, and will hopefully learn from it when he sees the people in line without an appointment one day. Interesting. Sometimes I'm amazed we all live in the same county. (Well, except, of course, for those of us who don't live in the same country!) Around here, we just show up at the DMV for both tests. Wait - I just re-read your last sentence. So an appointment is not required? It just allows you to skip the lines? I think I'd wait in line rather than wait a month to not wait in line. (Unless I'm reading this wrong...)

(Unless I'm reading this wrong...)It will vary office to office and state to state, but for us you make an appointment for the road test. Earlier appointments might have been available but he had to look for after 3PM only because I won't sign him out of school for the test. I'm not sure if we can make an appointment for the written test as both my kids did that as walk-ins. An insider told me to go late afternoon on a Thurs or Fri which worked perfectly for their school schedules and the lines weren't too bad. Our office locks the doors at 5, but processes everyone that has made it inside by that time. Thankfully almost everything can be done online now (tag renewals, license renewals, etc.). I'm not sure if you can do more than 1 license renewal online because my photo would be 10 years old, but I'm hoping.

An appointment is required for a road test at least where I live in CA it is. But other things like registration and license renewals don't require an appointment, but they suggest one and they suggest you make it a month in advance. What I was trying to say is that when the OP's son sees all the people waiting that maybe he will understand why its important to make an appointment early. They will get you through without an appointment but you might be there all day if you live in some parts of Southern CA. When I had to get my picture retaken to renew my license I was at the DMV for 45 minutes tops, and that was with an appointment. It wasn't something I could do online. Believe me I tried! I ran into people that had been there since the DMV opened at 8am and were just getting their pictures taken near my appointment time at 1:00pm. Wait 5 hours in line at the crowded DMV? No thanks. I will schedule in advance especially since I knew when my license would expire. Maybe for the people waiting in line that was the only time they had? Now for my registration renewal I don't go to the DMV. I do that at AAA.

Same thing with my daughter and her driving test! She will learn!
My daughter will be a freshman in college in 2 weeks! She waited until the last day to choose between 2 great schools. We paid the deposit, but she never did the housing application. Well, we did it one day late, and she didn't make any dorm or roommate requests (even though I told her to consider it). Well, she got the oldest dorm in the worst location. And 2 roommates, so three girls in a double room. She will learn to get her stuff done on time now. Sometimes these little lessons are very good in the long run.

Similar situation with my DS - he turned 16 in October and didnt end up getting his license until the following April. He didn't "believe" Mom could be possibly correct when she told him that he needed to have his permit for a certain number of months and put off getting his test.

Yes, this happened with my son as well. I kept reminding him to make the call, it was his responsibility not mine. Fun times!

And won't he be SHOCKED if he doesn't pass his test the first time and has to wait to take it again! LOL I really do want him to pass on the first try. The poor kid missed on his first attempt at the written test (what, I was supposed to read and learn the whole manual?? even if it wasn't mentioned in the class?) after his sister passed with 100% on her first try and it was a humbling experience for him. hahahahaha you might as well be living in my house. My ds failed his written test for his permit because he didn't really study the manual. He thought it was "stupid" that he had to learn how many ounces of wine equal how many beers (or how much hard liquor equals how many beers, or whatever the question was). Mr. Must Argue With Everything said "Mom, I'm not even old enough to drink" and then "Mom, when you drink shouldn't you just know how many beers makes you feel tipsy?" etc. etc. So he didn't memorize the numbers and sure enough he got one of those questions (it's just random which questions it asks). He missed that one and something else which caused him to fail. In contrast to her brother dd memorized the entire manual backwards and forwards, including the alcohol formulas. Guess what? She passed on the first try.

In Massachusetts, the test MUST be taken in a car with a hand brake, and neither of ours has one. I was really lucky that you could sign up for Saturday morning appointments to take the driving part of the test at the driving school. It was a little extra to do that, but then he was driving in one of the driving school cars with the dual brake. We had no problem getting an appointment within 2 Saturdays.

I know that it must have been hard to not "remind" him to get it taken care of. Good for you that you're willing to let him experience the consequences of his choices.
My oldest son is going through a similar situation with his car registration. He let it lapse and now he has to go through a process to get it re-registered and hope that he doesn't get pulled over and ticketed in the mean time.

He did get his application in about two days before they were due. He couldn't pick a roommate. He was too late. He gets his room assignment and he is in the dorm that was built in 2012. He has a large private room. He is on the second floor with one of two rooms with THIS view. He is pumped.
