I made it through my first week at work. It was very busy and tiring, but really good. Everyone is awesome. The whole system I'm part of is huge: 25,000 employees. Crazy. My little group is very nice. The work is actually pretty busy, and I'm functioning at the level of an idiot right now, but I'm really looking forward to settling in and learning.

Congrats! The first week is always the hardest - you are trying to remember everyone's names, company policies and most importantly, where the bathroom is!

I'm lucky I have a bathroom between the office and my lab. ETA: and if you are a FB friend you will be familiar with the selfie mirror in the bathroom. haha.

Is it just me that inserted the Lego movie song into that sentence? Now I am imagining that you are a master builder. Glad you like your new job. That is a great feeling.

Is the commute like you thought? It's Ok; better than I thought in some ways. I take one bus, no transfers (I originally thought I'd have to do bus, train, then subway). It's faster than I originally planned on, too. Which is great. So far I haven't had any energy to actually do anything during the ride... I read a little and try to stay awake. The sucky part is I work until 6 and the bus leaves from the station, which is 4.5 minutes from my building, also at 6. The next bus doesn't leave until 7:30, which means I get home at 9:15 at night and all my kids are in bed. I was able to catch the 6 o'clock bus this week and spent 45 minutes with my kids before bed and it was one of the nicest things ever. I'm hoping once I've settled in and been there for a few weeks, and everyone is back from vacation, I can talk to my managers and see if it would be possible to leave at 5:50 so I can get the 6 o'clock bus home.

I'm glad its going well thus far!
I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can work something out to catch the 6 pm bus. That sure would make a difference.

Great to hear! I'm hoping you can catch the 5:50 bus, too. If you get out At 6 and then bus doesn't come until 7:30, that's a lot of time you waste sitting around and waiting. Fingers crossed that it all works out for you.

Your outfit looked great! About leaving at 5:50-- I'd be willing to give up 10 minutes of lunch to be able to do that regularly. Something tells me that you'll be able to work that out.

We don't even get scheduled lunch breaks or a full 30 minutes. So that sort of sucks. And my job is client based, so I can't just come in 15 minutes early since my facility sets our operating hours. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to work out something, I'm just going to wait a couple of weeks before I bring it up.

Well done, you. I remember your search and your good news but I did not know when you were due to start. Hope you continue to enjoy the awesome bits and are able to get an accommodation from your managers which will help with the worst aspects of your commute.
Not that it helps, but my right-hand person at work is having a surprise, late 3rd baby soon, she is going on maternity leave at the end of the month (latest). We have worked out a personalized plan for her to take the maximum amount of paid time off, but she will come back in for two weeks in month four to help me in a pressurized document revamp phase for my most important client. She will also do some telecommuting. My point? Good workers are gold.

Yay! Well done!
I'm sure most employers wouldn't have a problem with you leaving 10 minutes early for such a good reason. I hope that works out.

Sounds like your first week was a success!
I had a job once where I got off at 4:00, the bus left at 3:58. Taking the 4:00 bus would get me home at 4:50. Taking the 4:28 bus got me home at 5:45-6:00. Seemed like the 4:00 missed all the traffic out of Vancouver. I skipped my afternoon coffee break and left ten minutes early each day. Made a huge difference in my life, and I didn't even have kids then!
I hope you can work something out.

Sounds great! I think I missed your job search -- where are you working? (...and I mean that in a Don't-Give-Me-Details-So-I-Can-Stalk-You kind of way, more in a What-Kind-of-Work-Are-You-Doing way...)

(...and I mean that in a Don't-Give-Me-Details-So-I-Can-Stalk-You kind of way, more in a What-Kind-of-Work-Are-You-Doing way...) I'm working as a lab technician in a huge research system in Toronto. Basically, I run machine that count cells and then sort them into different tubes for researchers.

I'm glad you had a good first week, and hope it continues that way. I'm sure you'll be able to work out something with your finish time. Only a really hard-hearted boss would make you sit around for an extra 90 minutes every night for the sake of 10 minutes. Could you arrange to work 40 minutes later one evening so that you could finish ten minutes earlier the other four? Or does the lab itself close at six?

Could you arrange to work 40 minutes later one evening so that you could finish ten minutes earlier the other four? Or does the lab itself close at six? I don't think working outside hours is really an option at this point. Our facility is open for appointments from 10:30-5:30, and then it takes half an hour to clean and shut down the machines for the night (and takes 1/2 hour to start and clean them each morning). Our booking system will currently only accept appointments during those hours. I think it would be complicated to ask to extend my availability outside of the booking hours because of the way the facility is run -- many machines run by a few people. It would quickly become confusing for clients if I was working 15 minutes early or late some days of the week, on some machines, while nothing else would be available during that time. Each of our machines are slightly different and are needed by different people for slightly different reasons.
