I started scrapping in 2003 and was really into it for 2-3 years. Then several things happened that caused me to slow down and then stop around 2006/7. Now I want to start again. DD is older and less demanding of my time, money isn't as tight, I'm no longer depressed etc.
One of the smaller reasons I stopped was feeling overwhelmed. There were a lot of pictures and I'm an extremely SLOW and indecisive scrapper. Now I realize I don't have to scrap them all. I think I'm going to start with pictures from our recent vacation. Then after that just go back and put most of the pictures in an album with just a small amount of journaling but nothing else. And just scrap some favorite pictures, those with special meaning etc.
One concern I have is the lack of LSS. Now it seems it's all online or big box stores. When I was scrapping I had at least a dozen or more LSS within a 30-45 mile radius. Now, um, I think there is one that I've found an hour away. I don't want to drive that far to go to crops but I do best at crops at stores where I can pick out and see products in person and see how they work with pictures. Does anyone else have the issue of needing to see products and be working on a layout? I'm very particular about shades of colors. Do people even go to crops anymore or does everyone just do it at home alone?
My other concern is where do you all get layout ideas? Especially if you are not huge into embellishments and "busy" pages? I'm not good with coming up with ideas and always 'scraplifted" my layouts. I prefered the layouts in Simple Scrapbooks (Cathy Zielske!), Becky Higgins sketches etc. I'm not much into patterned paper and generally used small amounts of more subdued patterns. I LOVE cardstock, especially Bazzill. I mostly used punches, and occasionally brads and stamps, sometimes stickers though not much. Anyway i've looked at Pinterest but it seems that I often see a lot of the same layouts repeated and most of them very complex and busy. I have some of my old magazines but would like to see some other ideas too. Any suggestions?
Last one, can you recommend a good paper trimmer? Mine is a Creative Memories 12 inch trimmer and the blade is getting dull and obviously getting replacements would be difficult. Plus it never worked all that great anyway (neither did the Fiskars I had before that). Have they improved at all since?

First of all, welcome back! I started scrapbooking around the same time you did, and took a similar break, though mine only lasted three years. Sounds like a great plan! I do something much like you are planning on doing. When I came back to scrapbooking, I just started with those photos. I've gone back and scrapped a few older ones when I've come across a picture or two I really like and had a story I wanted to record. I KNOW I'm never going to scrap all of my pictures -- and truthfully, I don't want to. I've never had a decent LSS close by. When I first started scrapping there were a couple in my area but they were so overpriced I couldn't afford to buy much there. And there was one about 2 hours from me that was more reasonable, but I could only get there a couple of times a year. I do a lot of my shopping online. I tend to overbuy, but I LIKE having a large stash to choose from. I think a paper collection is something quite wonderful, I feel no compulsion to use ALL Of my supplies! I also don't feel like I need to have colours match exactly -- and my personal preference is to find complementary shades in products to use with photos, rather than matching exactly. Like, right now I'm scrapping a picture of the tree in my front yard, and everything in the photo is green. I'm NOT using green paper. I'm using hot pink, yellow, gold, and a tiny bit of aqua. And I also really love shopping at the big box stores. I like online galleries, blogs, Pinterest. I am sure if you start a thread here asking for sources for simple pages, there will be lots of replies! Or you could search Pinterest for simple layout BOARDS and find some good boards to follow.

I took a 3-4 year break a few years ago. When I decided to return, I bought a couple idea books and made a trip to the LSS. I am a simple scrapper, trying to branch out a bit. I too love/loved Cathy Zielske, Becky Higgins, Stacey Julian, Lisa Brown, etc. Cathy has a blog and still scraps. Tracie posted a link to Mary Jenkins's blog a couple days ago and I love her style...pretty classic, but modern. Lots of inspiration here. i rock paper and scissors
I have some simpler layouts on my Pinterst board...although some I have pinned to give me ideas for ways to branch out. Pinterest
I would make a trek to the LSS that is an hour away. Sometimes just seeing the papers and store displays can really help. You'll also get an idea of what the new lines of paper look like and find brands that you love. I still go to crops...I attend a monthly paper mania club meeting at my LSS and do scrapbook weekends with a group of friends. We also go to some of the CKC or Embellish It Play All Day events when they are in our area. You could check out Meet Up to see if there are any scrapping groups in your area. If you are looking for a neat idea book, check out the Page Maps book. I bought a used copy (looks brand new) on Amazon for a couple bucks. Page Maps on Amazon

I'm starting up again after quite a while too, and also looking for a new trimmer so I'll be watching this thread. Happy scrapping!

Welcome back! Though I never took quite that long of a break, I too felt tremendous pressure from the number of photos I wanted to scrap and the urgency that precious memories were escaping before I got them recorded. Well, isn't that a buzz kill??? I read Stacy Julian's Big Picture Scrapbooking book, and her Library of Memories system completely changed how I approach scrapbooking. Mind you, I hardly implemented a FRACTION of her system! Just learning to think differently about what I scrap and why, helped me find an approach to choosing photos and a system for organizing my finished layouts that completely and utterly suits me. If you haven't been at it in a while, chances are you've got more photos than ever, so even if you don't decide to take a look at that particular book, give this some thought before you start up. Be open to different approaches to what you choose to scrap and how you store it, and give yourself permission to switch mid-stream if something in your method feels like at's burdening your enjoyment. Meetup.com might be a good place to find groups of scrappers who crop together near you. It can feel odd sometimes if you're alone and everyone else knows each other, but it might be worth a try to check out any groups that are close enough to home, you just might find a good fit! simplescrapbooksmag.com still has regular issues, that might be a good source of inspiration. Don't count pinterest out yet either... I too find that when I type something into search, only a fraction of what I see really fits what I wanted, but it's rare that I don't find something that inspires me and end up pining one or two things... before you know it, you've got a lot more inspiration than you realized! I use a Fiskars Rotary trimmer, 12X12 , 6" wide base with an arm extension. It's better than the last 2 I had, which were Cutterbee rotaries, and though I liked them they didn't cut straight. I hated buying paper sight unseen as well. Nary a LSS to speak of near me, pretty much ever. However, NJ hosts an Expo every year with retail vendors, so I've been able to line up a babysitter for the day and save up for one big shopping splurge on the designer collections they don't have at Big Box, nearly every year. It has gotten smaller over the years, but if you've got nothing else, well, you know what they say! If you google "scrapbook expo michigan" there are a bunch of links for various events-don't know if they're near you or have good reputations or not, but it's a start! I will say, though, that when I found a few collections I Just.Had.To.Have. that I couldn't find in person, I ordered on line. And... I liked it. You can check out new product at scrapbookupdate.com (usually there's a CHA or Trade Show link for Sneak Peaks), to get a sense of what you might like. The links often go to the blogs, many of which show project samples in regular lighting that give you a better sense of true color than the product images.

I love pinterest for ideas. I find them and organize them by how many layouts per page, plus a sketch board, a two page layout board, a Disney board, and several card boards. Here is a link to my pinterest page: My pinterest boardsI sometimes have crops at my house, but I would like to find another alternative. I have just started ordering paper online because there are things I want that are not in my big box stores.

You might try buying a collection kit to help you get back into it. It would save time on coordinating paper and embellishments. Hobby Lobby carries the Echo Park kits and with a 40% coupon, it's only $6!! Combine the paper with some solid card stock and you can get several nice layouts out of it.

Welcome back! You've had a lot of great ideas. I agree to check out inspiration on Pinterest and some of the sites offering sketches, templates etc. Studio calico have weekly sketches and I've enjoyed using some of those. Page maps is also a good resource.
I do the vast majority of shopping online now and find the buying of paper is ok, but maybe buying from the same collection or manufacturer is a good way to start if you're not sure about colours.
Have fun with your scrapping!

I love using sketches. I also have tons of kits from Scrapbook Generation that have the sketches and everything for the layouts included. I find using sketches and putting together page kits saves time and makes me focus on completing pages.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread. Anyway thanks for the encouragement, tips, advice, links etc. I'm going to go through and check out the links now. My birthday was the other day and I got some Michael's GC's and cash. I spent today going through my scrapbook stuff. Well, some of it. I also did stamping for a short while and used it a bit in my scrapbooks. I didn't get to the stamps/inks yet. That will wait until next weekend! I'll hit Michael's then too and hopefully that LSS in a few weeks.

I started in 2002 and took a good 2 year break. Just got back into it in April! 1. I have 2 lss, but I do place large orders on line. I like scrapdoodle, a cherry on top. There is another one but can't remember its name right now. 2. Pinterest and youtube are my go to inspiration locations for layouts. 3. I have the newer Fiskars and love it!
