My oldest as a Freshman was in Calc BC but he took PreCalc honors over the summer at Johns Hopkins to qualify for this. Also went to higher level math classes since 5th grade and was bussed to the high school in 7th and 8th grade. He took multi variable calculus and linear algebra for his senior year. There was no AP exam for this but he tested out of it for college so got the credit as a pre requisite for another math class but not counted towards degree requirements. Middle DD did Geometry Honors, PreCalc Honors, Calc AB then Calc BC. DS2 is a Sophmore doing Calc BC. Also did PreCalc honors at JH over this past summer. His twin sister is not so mathematically gifted. She's on the normal math track doing Geometry Honors this year after Algebra II as a freshman. She is a much more talented writer We live in a fabulous school district.

Dd#1 - honors pre-calc as a junior
Dd#2 - algebra 1 in 8th grade. Pretty sure she will follow #1's track.

scrappinghappy wow! (If I could make a thumbs up here I would) Was there a thread here a while ago about some schools now teaching Algebra2 before Geometry? Our school still does it the old way.

Thanks anonrefugee. Having a gifted kid is both a blessing and a curse but we are so blessed to live in a wonderful school district that could provide all it did for our kids. My oldest DS really, really struggled with his peers as he just didn't, and still doesn't, think like them. He was so lucky to have a 5th grade teacher, who is still a close friend to him, who appreciated his unconventional methods of problem solving and encouraged them rather than trying to make a square peg fit in a round hole. This wonderful teacher also got my son into and involved with Mensa, a group I can't thank enough for keeping the rest of us sane DS has found his niche in one of the top computer science and applied maths universities in the country and as he says, his colleagues "get"him. He is happy, so we are happy too!

My freshman son is taking Geometry. And he needs a graphing calculator. What? In the age of smartphones and laptops I have to buy him the same calculator I used in high school?

A friend's son had the same sigh of relief when he could finally be around "his people"! Good luck to him!

My 7th grader is taking high school credit Geometry at the middle school she attends. I don't know what we'll do next year, because they don't offer any higher math at the middle school. I don't know if it will require me having to take her to the high school-which is all the way across town.

I'm always interested in seeing how different schools handle these classes.
I have a Senior ds who followed the old track: 9th Grade - Honors Algebra 2/Trig 10th Grade - Honors PreCalc 11th Grade - AP Calc B/C 12th Grade - AP Stats
His sister got stuck in the new version (and she tested horribly on the 7th grade placement test and ended up below what should have been her level). She's a Freshman and will end up with: 9th Grade - Honors Algebra 1 10th Grade - Geometry 11th Grade - Algebra 2/Trig 12th Grade - Honors PreCalc
Thanks to Common Core kids in our district can no longer take Geometry as an 8th Grader which means the highest they can take in 9th Grade is Geometry so thankfully she's only one year "behind" (this is my only kid who tested as Gifted). Amazing given that in 7th and 8th grade she was basically "learning" basic math (and at least half the kids in her class struggled with understanding even that).
