Quick!!
That's OK by me, I am not going to be purchasing a gun, and if I were I probably wouldn't buy it at walmart. A weapon in not the place to deal with or risk anything where quality is concerned and Walmart has products made special for them that are a different quality than the manufacturers normal quality.

It's about fucking time, hopefully they will get rid of all guns at some point. Guns have no place in department stores.

Sounds good to me. We have quite different gun rules/ availability here in New Zealand but even so there are still too many fatal incidents.

. They will still be selling hunting rifles and shotguns, which is a majority of what they carried anyway.

Good. Dh and Ds hunt, and we have a gun safe full of an assortment of everything from shotguns to muzzle loaders.
I see no reason for anyone other than the police or military to possess an assault weapon.

In general. Well ordinary police don't carry guns - only the Armed Offenders Squads. Basically everyone needs to get a firearms licence to use air rifles and hunting rifles and you need a special extra endorsement for pistols for target shooting and for any military style weapons. To get the basic licence, you have to be a 'fit & proper person', do a safety course, provide character references and you and your character witnesses get a police visit to verify the information provided and also check the arrangements for keeping the guns secure etc.

Not speaking from personal experience of the rules, but there isn't much political lobbying about guns here and my impression is there's general acceptance of the controls. The police tried to move to universal gun registration a few years ago, but that was successfully challenged in the courts. So the approach is still to licence users. I believe that out of a population of 4.5 million (yes that's the whole country) there are 200,000-250,000 people who hold firearms licences and about 1 million guns. The vast majority of those would be hunting rifles.

I've been saying this for years and years. But, oh no, taking a safety class might infringe on my right to bear arms.
I'll stop there I had a whole bunch more typed out Something about stupidity but it'll only get someone angry with me, better off not. LOL

I believe that you should have to take and pass a gun use and safety class, above and beyond hunters ed. I also believe that it should need to be redone maybe every 3 years for the first 12 and then every 5 or so years for life. I believe you should have to produce the card or number each time you applied for a hinting license or purchased a weapon. I do not believe it would infringe on rights to own as long as it is not coat prohibitive.

Is it similar to England where your Primary Care Physician has to sign that you are sane. I have a friend that owns guns in England and she always jokes that she is the only one at the table that can prove she is sane. ETA - I should have kept reading "fit and proper" is the sanity test!

No, here you have to pass a 'fit and proper' test and get vetted by police but there's no need for doctor's certificate. However, if someone has a history of violence (including domestic abuse), alcohol or drug problems or is not mentally stable they won't meet the requirements.

I do not believe it would infringe on rights to own as long as it is not coat prohibitive. I'm all for voting rights. I believe you should have to pass a test to prove that you are literate and that you are knowledgeable on the issues that you are voting on. I believe you should have to have an ID and produce it every time you show up to vote, along with your test results.
I do not believe it would infringe on rights to vote as long as it is not cost prohibitive.
See how that works? Rights are RIGHTS and can't be taken away or infringed upon, per our Constitution. The right to bear arms has been infringed upon hundreds of times, gun owners have captitulated to regulations over and over again, and it still hasn't resulted in the end of "gun violence". Maybe because violence has nothing to do with GUNS and everything to do with the human heart and the society that we live in that glorifies and encourages hatred, sin, evilness and death. Seriously though...Exactly how would safety courses have stopped yesterdays murders? Do you think that the man didn't realize that pointing the gun and pulling the trigger was unsafe? How would it have stopped any of the gun murders that occur daily, mainly in cities with gun bans already in place? Would your average criminal running around the inner cities take a safety course for the Glock that he just bought off the drug dealer on the corner who stole it from some house in the burbs that he broke in to? Do you think that the irresponsible parent who leaves their gun on the coffee table with a toddler in the house doesn't KNOW that bad things can happen if the child gets the gun, and that only a gun safety course can educate them to that fact? Gun safety courses are a good idea, I'm not saying they aren't. But they should not be mandated by government as a condition of gun ownership. They are not the "magic bullet" that will solve the gun violence issue, because they do nothing to target a single person who is prone to using a gun to commit their violence. The man yesterday bought his gun legally. He underwent the mandated background check. He followed the laws on the books, as did the store that sold him the gun. There was nothing in his background that could have predicted he would do this. Do you really, truly, think that he would have NOT carried out his plan if he had taken a safety course first? As far as Walmart not selling semi-automatic guns anymore...so what? Their choice. They weren't a big seller for them anyway. Most people who want those types of weapons go through a knowledgeable source anyway, and purchase a better quality than walmart sells. Besides...have you ever tried to get service at the gun counter at walmart? You are likely to die of old age before you find someone in the store who can help you buy one of their guns. It's not a big loss. Just for arguments sake...Do you know how many things that Walmart sells that could be used to kill another human being? Knives are used in many murders. Knives kill many people. Walmart sells knives. Demand they stop selling knives immediately! And please, for the love of pete everyone...stop using the term "assault weapon". It makes you sound incredibly ignorant. There is no such thing. It's a term made up by liberals to stoke up fear in the ignorant segment of the society that has no understanding of guns or constitutional rights, or human nature for that matter. Think for yourselves, please, and educate yourselves.

Your 2 year old isn't going to kill itself or you if they pick up your carelessly left your vote laying around and look at it. Your not going to blow your head off if your too stupid to unload your vote before you clean it.

Do they all sell guns or just some locations? Because I've never noticed guns for sale in our local Walmart. And not in any others I've been in... I do tend to be rather unobservant but I've just never seen it.

WalMart sells a LOT of guns. As far as that AR-15 being an assault weapon. It shoots one bullet with one trigger pull. They are not machine guns, where you hold the trigger down for a burst.

I have yet to see an AR-15 at my local walmart. Shotguns?? yes....even some handguns but an AR-15? that cracks me up. Like someone posted above, if someone was interested in an AR they wouldn't buy it at Walmart, which would explain why many don't carry it and now even corporate wide they are getting rid of them. All this announcement does is make them look politically correct in this day and age.
As for guns themselves I have a problem with the whole "ban them all" argument. I even have issues with the "stricter laws" argument. Why? Because we have laws in place that aren't enforced as it is. How well has banning drugs worked? innocent people are still killed by those using these illegal drugs. How has banning or having strict punishments for drinking and driving worked so far? It doesn't. Many times the drunk driver is on his 3rd, 4th, 5th offense, kills an entire family and gets slapped on the wrist by the justice system. These aren't even protected rights per our constitution and yet they kill many people yearly.
Many states require that you have a safety course for conceal and carry (not sure about just purchasing for home) . I don't have statistics or anything, but I would love to see where that has caused a drop in gun violence or gun deaths. We instituted wait periods or cooling off periods....how has that worked? If the reports that this man purchased his gun legally are true, where did having a wait period help in this situation? How are more strict rules and guidelines going to help when the current ones aren't even enforced, backed up with meaningful punishments etc?
I think we need to take a look at how current laws are enforced and how people in these situations are getting their weapons. Many are from family, many are ex military so they retained theirs after service, some have stolen them, and others have gone through the appropriate channels in their state. How do we address these methods in a consistent manner that makes a difference? That is where the argument needs to start.

You probably have. A Remington .232 is basically the same gun.
What do you all thing AR stands for?
I am betting almost everyone thinks it means Assault Rifle. Maybe a few think Automatic Rifle. Both are wrong. It stands for ArmaLite, the company that first developed it.
An AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle. The M16, which it looks a lot like is.
