I'd ask your son his opinion. I had one headshot at a studio (back in the day when this was more of the norm) and did no other poses. I was involved in other activities, but felt silly wasting a day posing in different things related to high school. Knowing the high school related things were not something I would look back on much or display since I was about to graduate from high school. It just wasn't me. If all he wants is one casual pose, I wouldn't push the issue further. I never regretted my decision.

My photographer (see my post about my dd's senior pictures) actually told my dd to look on Pintrest. She does have a hobby (as is evident in the pictures) but the photographer wanted dd to find ideas that she wanted to do. I would still have your son look at Pintrest and get some ideas. I had a photographer do my wedding shots and he never asked what we wanted. We had no close ups! Very nice pictures! She is very pretty!!!! No way he will dress up formal - The dressiest we will get is a long sleeve button front shirt with the sleeves rolled up to 3/4 length, undershirt under it, nice jeans/shorts with sperry's. And, I am ok with it - It is who he is. He rocks that attire pretty well, so I am not complaining. I had to chuckle at your description of his outfit. My son was the same way. We did have three different settings, one at the pool hall (he was and is a pool hall junkie) one outside and one at the studio. At the studio he 'dressed up' in a black and white striped polo. One more hint, if your child will allow it, is to have some shots taken of the two of you together. My son and I hadn't had a pro photo taken since he was six years old. We did a bunch of shots at the outside setting and also in studio and I am so happy we did. I had one blown up and framed. Love it.

For my son's senior photos, the photographer did the following: - sitting in natural stone stairway leaning back, with elbows on knees - standing by natural stone wall straight on, leaning against wall - straight in front of aqua painted distress bead board - standing in field - straight, turned, hands in pockets
Many similar poses but with different back ground. One of my favs was the black-n-white high definition photo. Wished I got that of my entire family.

As for the flag, what others think doesn't concern me a whole lot. I have already shared the idea with my son, and he loved it (as did I) The railroad tracks are not used regularly. They are fairly close to our subdivision, and I have seen traffic maybe twice in the past year. As for passe, again - if he likes the options I have found for possible suggestions, we will run with it. If someone else isn't "into it" - I don't care! It is ultimately about what he wants, I was just looking for some ideas to discuss with him so we all felt like it was a successful photo shoot. His clothes may not be fancy, but it's who he is, and I love that!

The black and white - hi-def sounds cool!

My DS sounds like your DS! We just got his done earlier this month too. We had in studio shots and outside. The one's that I thought looked most "natural" and not posed: - sitting backwards on a chair with his arms crossed over the back of the chair - standing, hands in pockets against a backdrop of corrugated steel - one foot up on a giant "2016", leaning over with one arm resting on his leg - outside, sitting up against a tree trunk - outside, on a large rock with a waterfall behind We are waiting for pics to come back and I will post when I can. Surprisingly, he responded really well to the photographer, not listening to his mother was actually better and got great results!

Oh, I feel your pain. My oldest did not want senior pictures. Then he agreed that I could take them. Then in a moment of weakness agreed to letting a professional take them. I found a photographer that would do a thirty minute shoot. My son had two different shirts. They were the same color and looked very similar but one is a t-shirt. We live about 10 minutes from a gorgeous mountain and the photographer took a ton of pictures in 30 minutes. There were five that I loved. Do you really need 200 pictures? Nope. I have a lovely canvas 20 x 30" on my wall of him sitting in front of Pike's Peak and it was all accomplished in 30 minutes. Now my second son, the poser, well, he was a different story, and yes, one really did need to take 200 pictures.

Remember, the photos are about him, not about what you like mom. Yeah but I've got them hanging on my wall for the next 20 years...
I thought DD was hard, can't wait for "grump on a log - don't take my picture - how long is this going to take" DS

When I see non-sport/car/hobby casual guy poses they are often outdoors, and they are often either standing and leaning against something, or they are sitting on stairs, a bench, a rail, etc., and leaning forward towards the camera.
