As if choosing a house because their kids would like it isn't bad enough, what about the childless couples that talk about how much their DOG will like this or that? The ones that want a single story house because they're afraid their kids might fall down the steps. Or the one today who refused to buy a house with toilet paper holders mounted on the walls. Seriously?

Time for the House Hunters Drinking Game * I wish there were granite countertops * I wanted four bedrooms ...even though we have no kids * The paint is horrible! * Our dog, Molly, needs a bigger yard Feel free to add Or they have a kid and mention his name 65,000 times. His name is usually very trendy too. "Oh, Jeffers could play here." "Jeffers would love this piece of grass." Quit saying Jeffers' name!!!! I would be the person on tv wanting Molly to have a bigger yard. Even worse is what the dog would want throughout the whole episode! (Should have read the whole thread...) It boggles my mind when they get so fixated on something they don't like. Paint color is bad enough, but I have seen wall hangings be a reason people don't really like a house.

I'm another pea who would rather have more counter space than 2 sinks.

I hate that, too, but, I do have to say that we almost didn't put an offer in on our house because we have a VERY small backyard, and a 60lb dog. I was worried it was too small. Luckily, he doesn't really run around back there for exercise, and we have trails and a big neighborhood to walk him in. If we didn't, I may have changed my mind.

I always try to get my husband to watch House Hunters with me. It makes me looks so good because I never talk to him like some of the women on the show talk to their husbands!

There is the rude commercial where the parents of triplets are folding clothes and she tells him isn't any good at folding. Hate this commercial with a passion. I can't stand that commercial! I couldn't imagine speaking to my husband like that or him speaking to me like that when we are trying to help each other.

We need stainless steel appliances. The yard is not fenced in. It's so spacious! "open concept" should count double in the drinking game, IMHO. I hate that tired, overused term! At least think of a different way to describe it - "airy" or "long sightlines" or just get to the point: "as few walls as possible" - gah!
(No, I don't know why that sticks in my craw so much. LOL)

If people just want a huge open space, why not buy one of those steel hangar style buildings? There you go, all the open space you could possibly want.

I'll never forget the show where the couple had no kids but a cat, and everything was about the cat. "Oh, Precious wouldn't like the view from THAT window." Or, "Precious will LOVE this!" I wanted to tell her that cats really don't give a shi!. About anything other than their food. Or the couple who says, "oh, stairs won't work with the baby!" like they don't realize that Jr. won't be a baby forever.
I always wonder if when the couple sees the show that makes them look like such ninnies if they are embarrassed by themselves.

The open concept drives me nuts. Everyone wants it.
I sometimes think "really, your house would have to be clean all the time if people could see the whole main floor from the front door".
God forbid I put my house up for sale and they want to renovate it and make it open concept. There is a curved staircase in the middle of my house that serves both the third floor and the basement. Yes I watch too much Love it or List it and Property Brothers as well!

But the way these couples talk about it, like it's the DOG'S preference and decision, makes them sound ridiculous. IMHO, of course.

I laugh at how many want the kids rooms close to the master because they have a baby/toddler! Or that don't want a 2 story house/stairs or any kind of railing/balcony. It's like they don't think their child will ever grow up or that there are parenting/teaching methods to help with those issues. My twins were safely going up and down stairs at 15 months! Not too terribly long after they learned to walk. Sure they crawled up and slid down, but they did it safely so that I wasn't worried all the time.

"This bathroom isn't big enough." What in hell are people doing in their bathrooms that they need to be so large?? Ours isn't overly large as some I've seen but I do think dual sinks are good for a marriage. I agree, dual sinks are great for a marriage! As for the bathroom isn't big enough comment, all you have to do is watch a few episodes of Love It or List It where a family with 4-5 kids has them all packed into one tiny bathroom with one sink, all brushing their teeth at the same time, to know where that one is coming from! Some of those "before" bathrooms look like clown cars with all the people that are piled in.

We put her in the one bedroom that doesn't have a roof under the window, LOL. We were teenagers once, we're not that dumb!

If you were sitting in the family room, you could see every room on the first floor (the kitchen, dining room, living room) except for the study. In a house 4600 sq. ft., you had no privacy. And you could hear everything going on in the house. The kids playing in the living room when you were trying to read in the family room. The family room and foyer were 2 stories. If you were upstairs in a bedroom with the door closed, you could still hear the tv in the family room very loudly (and the tv wasn't even turned up too loud). I was so glad when we moved back to our much smaller much more private house.

"This bathroom isn't big enough." What in hell are people doing in their bathrooms that they need to be so large?? They all want vanities with double sinks in the bathroom so they can brush their teeth at the same time. I can see doing that when you have multiple kids and are trying to get them to bed or out the door to school. But do adults really brush their teeth together? I've been married 28 years and we've never brushed at the same time. Are we weird?? We brush together every night, it's just part of our routine. We brush together on weekends in the morning and in the evening. During the week there is no way i'm getting up when he does. We also shower together too though, so we're probably abnormal. Since we've been married i've only showered alone once while he's home and it was so strange I never did it again.

Room location is not something that every worried me. For me, the deal breaker was a dark house. I want lots of natural light!

Oh, the comment each guy says about a room having "natural light" is so scripted. Seven times the show has zeroed in on something that is exactly what I have in my house with some 25 year old diva announcing...can you imagine anyone living with that! I love that finally granite and stainless steel are starting to be passé on the latest shows...going the way of the red accent wall.

I get tired of the closet jokes. Wife: All of my stuff will fit here, I don't know what you will do! How about get rid of some clothes. This always gives me a good laugh because my husband takes up the majority of our walk-in closet and i keep my clothes in the guest room closet.

After 25 years of marriage we are in our 4th house. It's old. We have one bathroom upstairs and a tiny (and I mean tiny) powder room downstairs. all the rooms are closed off from each other. Now I understand why. Nobody watching TV in the LR has to listen to cooking or washing in the kitchen. Nobody has to see my dirty dishes. Food smells don't spread throughout the living areas.

Tell me how you keep the smells from spreading throughout the house? I live in a 70's non-open space ranch and the odor from last night's cooking of collard greens is still lingering in the bedrooms. Blech!

When we bought our house three years ago, I really loved a lot of the homes we looked at with the more open floor plans just because with a small child we wanted to keep an eye on her which is hard to do through walls, LOL. We ended up getting a house that is definitely NOT open concept and overall it is working for us (for the most part, larger gatherings are hard because this house doesn't have a suitable space for that). After reading some of the comments here about the noise/sound/smells traveling everywhere, I'm REALLY glad our house isn't open concept! That kind of thing would eventually drive me insane, especially as our kid gets older and noisier!

Every time people say they NEED open concept all I can think about is the noise. But then I have 4 kids. We moved from a house that had dining room/family room/kitchen all in one space. Whenever someone was working in the kitchen, someone else would turn up the TV. Every time someone played the piano, again up with the volume. And when the crappy dishwasher was running? Same thing. Not to mention the constant echoing of just plain kid noises. The noise just about did me in.
I'm glad to be in a house now with separate spaces for the rooms. Our family room even has french doors so it can be even more separate. Makes me happy!

krazykatlady Can't help with collard greens! Stronger smells do travel, but not quite so quickly and if I can open the kitchen windows it's not as bad. This is also why I can't use the crockpot overnight. I can smell it and I usually wake up nauseous with a headache.

When people see a house with wall paper or paint they don't like, and they don't want the house because "it's too much work".
"I have to have white cabinets/hardwood floors/updated fixtures" and aren't willing to consider a house unless it's already installed even if everything else is perfect.
And yes, Tiny HH absolutely kills me when they say it's too small. You're looking for a tiny house, you are not allowed to say it is too small.

Living in CA a quarter acre is a decent sized lot. Many of the newer homes are 5,000 sq foot lots or smaller. And these can be 4,000 sq ft houses!! So when someone sees a house on a 1/2 acre and says the backyard is too small, we just roll our eyes.

I also hate that when i don't feel like cleaning the entire kitchen you can see the mess from everywhere except the bedrooms.
