If it's a dorm room, it's pretty small so try to limit what you're packing. My parents helped me move in my freshman year and after that I was on my own. There were always volunteers helping but just a lot of trips with breaks in between.

We just moved some stuff up to the 6th floor last week. Our freshman got to use a cart for 15 min., and she and her sisters could only get one load up. So we all carried the remaining stuff up to the 6th floor (elevator line was long). It was hot and tiring! My daughter told us yesterday that she takes the stairs (for exercise) and after 3 flights, she has to rest for a second. I am terrified of elevators, so I never take them. No tips for you, but it sounds like that will really make move in difficult! Maybe get a few helpers (unless you are out of state like we are!) Another help was that the school only allowed people to take elevators up! All the "carts" folded up and had to be carried back down the stairs. Yeah, my DS was on the 9th Floor. But it was only one trip up because of the helpers. It made such a difference. That makes sense! Good idea to free up the elevators. Sounds like your son's school is very organized!

One thing we did last year for DD's move in (up the stairs) in FLA humidity. We used a lot of the large heavier weight shopping bags (like TJ Maxx sells for $1) and filled those up. The handles made them more manageable to carry up. Then she could keep them folded in her closet for her grocery store trips. GOOD LUCK!!!!!! Here's another old school Florida trick. Take a cooler. Wet down multiple washclothes, put them in ziplocks and throw them in the cooler. If you are icked out by the idea of touching other people's cooties, write their names on the ziplocks. When you want to cool down, pull out your damp washcloth and wipe the back of your neck, arms, face, whatever. Dampen the rag again, put it back in the ziplock and then back in the cooler. Run your wrists under cool water as often as possible. Drinks lots of water the day before you go, you should start hydrating ahead of time. Have fun! ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/TKS2q_7siLiFtq0xPQvx.jpg) Love that cooler idea! But I couldn't have had lots of water the day before. ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) That was our 5 hr. travel day and the kids get so mad when my husband and I need to stop at the rest stops! Of course they are just teen girls, so they can go all day without having to go to the bathroom! I tell them just wait until they are "old"! I was just like them too when I was their age. ![](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Yes, she's a sophmore, and familiar with the rooms. Plus they got a pretty big one this year. No room for a cooler on the way down. We are staying in a hotel the night before, and doing the State fair. I just wanta move her in and get the heck outta there! ha. Yes, we are moving her. We live 4 hrs away, and she has no car. We have always moved our girls to college, along with MANY MANY other parents. ha.

That's two days in the heat! We had planned to go to the Fair today, but decided NO. It's just too hot!

The good news is that people have been doing this since the early 1900s and they have survived . The bad news is that it will be a lot of trips up and down the stairs. Good luck!

I was going to suggest a dolly as well. It wouldn't take up that much room in our vehicle!

Yea, Michelle, crazy I know! ha. I saw attendance was down today due to the heat. You should have gone! We went last yr and it was HOT, and record attendance. So we're not scared! ha.
Dh vetoed the idea of a dolly. No room. They packed a bit tonight, and trust me. it's packed to the gills. and they don't even have the stuff on the roof yet. He said it will be fine, and she's learned she doesn't have to take EVERYTHING this yr.

The best college moving tip we got was to buy a bunch of blue zippered tote bags from IKEA. I ordered them from eBay and almost all of my daughter's things fit into 8 bags that were easy to carry. Her room is on the top floor of her dorm, no elevator. We were greeted by about 10 football players who carried all of her things up to her room - including a fridgr. They were scattered around the campus as well as members if other sports teams. We all showed up expecting it to be crazy, but instead it was easy.

Instead of packing clothes in suitcases or boxes which can be heavy or awkward, we packed my daughter's clothes in heavy duty garbage bags. I would try to use copy paper boxes for other items because they hold up well and have handles. Reuseable grocery bags with handles are the perfect size to carry up multiple flights of stairs.
