oday was the first Saturday it hasn't been eleventy million degrees in Phoenix so we set out to check some garage sales. I did not find anything I was looking for but I found some things I wasn't hunting Total haul: $16 $1 opened but never played $5, new in the box (regularly $40!) $2 $3 Vintage, not repro $5 Vintage, no repro I didn't find the steals that heartcat finds, but we were pretty pleased

The church down the street was having their big sale today and I found this pretty box of stationary, organizing tray, a tiny clue game,a mug with my favorite radio station name,a 6x6 scrapbook and 2 yds. of upholstery fabric. I also got some dried fall flower arrangements for my mantle, but they didn't photograph well.

Ugh, I can't get the picture to post, but I got a brand new complete set of magformers, an extreme set to boot- with the large pentagons for 4.99. A basic set with the same number of pieces costs around 80.00, this particular set typically runs around 130.00!! It actually came in the orginal packing with the book and everything and would have appeared to never have been opened, but it has an extra 12 pieces in the box. I was super excited, I have a basic set in my classroom and it is by far the most popular item for free time year after year. This set is for the kids my personal life, they are going to love it! I also got a few games for my class, a really fun Dr. Seuss game for 1.99, a nice German wooden animal stacking game for 1.99 and a few books for cheap too.
My unusual pieces I got today is a very odd Ginger Rogers (yes, that Ginger Rogers) book- think Nancy Drew, but Ginger Rogers instead for 2.00. That little beauty is for my brother who loves Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movies. And for my own personal amusement I got an LP of the Aristocats and Cabbage Patch Dolls for ten cents each. The Cabbage Patch record has a song called Three Villians I am super excited to listen to when I get to school Monday (that is where my record player is). Should be amazing, right???.

jen you did very well! I LOVE the vintage toys. And I am a big fan of word games, but had not heard of Quiddler. You will have to let us know after you've played it whether it is one you recommend. @elaynef you got a nice assortment of things. I love church sales, there is always such a variety and great prices. Skellinton what a steal on the Magformers! And that Cabbage Patch album is cool. I have never seen a Ginger Rogers book, what a great find for your brother. I had to work last Saturday and didn't make it out to the thrift store Sunday, so nothing for me recently. And no garage saling today, because dh and I are heading out to the dirk bike store an hour away. Hopefully someone else will have some more updates so I can get my 'fix'.

Hit goodwill this week to get ready for Halloween. Dh got some corduroy pants $6.99 for his shaggy costume, we'd got a pumpkin costume $4.99 to photograph the baby in and i got a dirndl costume $9.99 for Oktoberfest. Unfortunately it was too small so i cut it up and made it into an apron top that I'll wear with a t shirt and skirt to have the same look. We also got hocus pocus for $3.99. I don't think I've seen it but I've heard it's a favorite from others.

Grom Pea, you did very well. I gather that you live in an area with some German heritage, what with the Oktoberfest and finding that kind of costume at Goodwill?

I live in San Diego but there are a couple of Oktoberfest celebrations. I actually bought one of those leg avenue costumes but it will look good over a normal length skirt

I stopped by HFH ReStore today and found a collection of about 20 pieces of the same Noritake china my parents had. $10!!!! My sister has Mom's china now (Mom downsized last year) so I texted her to see if she wanted it. The funny thing is, with the display of dishes was a set of wine glasses with almost the exact same wheat pattern as mom and dad's crystal (which I now have). So, for $10 ( the glasses were $1 for the set but I think she gave them to me free), I got a nice addition to my sister's China and some pretty glasses which I may keep or give to sis.

@missjen, that Fisher Price clock just took me back about forty-five years! My cousin had it, and kept it at her Gran's house (my great-aunt). It was the first toy I looked for every time we went to visit, but if my cousin was there, she would limit how long I could play with it. I can still hear it playing when I look at the photo. Thank you so much for putting it on, you've reminded me of a lovely memory.

I went to GW's 1/2 off day today. I got my husband a brand new pair of Lacrosse 2 buckle rubber boots for work, for $7.50. They retail for around $70
A really cute, long black top for me $2.50
A boxwood topiary for $2.50
A tiny little glass cloche with a base for $1.00
A pretty aqua colored glass bottle with a stopper lid $1.00
All in all a pretty good day!

I used to have one of those Fisher Price clocks! And I really loved playing Kerplunk too.
At three different Goodwills, I found one Hazel Atlas pear plate for $0.99 each. I guess I should have looked in a fourth store, but I will keep my eyes open (I collect pear items in a very minor way )
Then, I found a vintage 70's (I think) Arabia of Finland Karelia teapot for $4.99 and two creamers for $1.99 each. I don't know why there were two creamers and no sugar bowl, but I figured that I can pour sugar until I find the correct vessel one day.

We went to Savers yesterday and I found some Fostoria Americana glasses. They were made in the 50's and it was my mom's wedding crystal pattern. It really isn't very rare and usually reasonably priced. I got 3 wineglasses for $6. I picked up a piece here and there. Cheap therapy and a lot of fun.

cmhs what an awesome buy on the china! How fortuitous that it was that same pattern. @elaynef those ornaments are adorable, and extra special with the connection to your collection. grammanisi, you really did well. And Aerosoles shoes/boots are always so comfy! chendra, that is so funny, and lucky, that you found the identical pear plate at three different stores. PLurker, I LOVE that little tin stove! And how neat the the toy gun even comes with original box. What great gifts. crittsmom, you're right, thrifting is not only fun, but cheap therapy.

We hadn't planned to go yard saling or thrifting yesterday, but on the way back from the dirt bike store we went to a large Value Village in another city, and then found a couple of garage sales on the scenic drive back. I found a lovely, soft lambswool and mohair throw for $6.99 at the thrift store, that I can use for photos. Not a super deal, but I also came across some new in package tights, regular price $15, for $4.99 and bought a pair for myself and for dd as a stocking stuffer. I have been looking for photography props, and came across one yard sale where I bought this cute denim covered child's chair, and a bunch of props for little girls, all for $5. The chair is made of resin or something, so very light and easy to transport to locations. The covers come off for easy washing, and the denim is both gender neutral and will go with any kind of clothing or style of dress. A happy find was a pewter wine stopper of a golfer, that I will give me dad, an avid golfer who also makes his own wine, for $2. I also picked up two small bluish bowls that I have learned are Avon slag glass, for a quarter a piece, and a small plastic horse that is made in Germany by a company called Schleich, that I had never heard of. It is quite detailed. I bought that to use as part of a tablescape for a Night at the Races dinner for the Kentucky Derby or Queen's Plate. It was fifty cents.

We hit a couple of Goodwills and I found a Worlds of Wonder Talking Julie Doll for $5. Holy Moly is she creepy! Her eyes and mouth move when she talks and she's interactive, which makes her seem alarmingly sentient. I was moving her from the table and she said something like "Ooh, are we going somewhere?" She also comments when the lights get dimmer or brighter. I'd never heard of her before, but I guess she's from the company that made Teddy Ruxpin. Personally, she seems more like Chuckie...

We hit the antique market about an hour away from us yesterday. It's the last Sunday of the month and runs from April - September so this was the last one of the season. I think we did pretty well. I don't have pictures or links for all but I'll include what I have links for: - Fisher Price Little People bus like what I had when I was little - Seattle Worlds Fair plate that will go with the Seattle Worlds Fair tray I picked up a few weeks ago that I have the perfect spot on the wall for. - Pyrex loaf pan in spring blossom - Viewmaster reels - my husband collects and we found reels of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the moon landing, and some others I cannot remember that were unique. - Pyrex spring daisy carafe. It's missing the lid, though. It's the first one I have found in the wild so I snatched it up. There was a table and chairs I was drooling over but I couldn't justify it because it would eat up too much space in my kitchen. It was retro and the chrome needed some work but the chairs were perfect and they were turquoise and my heart skipped a beat. We spend several minutes looking at it and debating. If it were the smaller table or had a leaf that we would have removed it would already be at my house.
