This sounds similar to the premise of the new movie Good Night Mommy.

I know someone who eventually had to find a new home for one of her cats after a vet visit like this. She tried absolutely everything Ack, that's what I'm afraid of! It has been 8 hours and I tried the towel trick, but Ember is still very aggressive. Hopefully within the next few days, things will settle down! I am worried though, because everything always seems to happen "the hard way" around here Thanks for the advice, everyone! I will try some catnip and feliway... I have some, but how would I use it for this situation? Just spray it around the door on both sides?

This happened with our dogs one time. The not-so-bright one thought the been-to-the-vet one seemed supiscious, and they ended up getting in a fight. In typical dog fashion, they got over it in about 5 seconds.

Hi Melly! I'm brand new to the board, and became a member just so I could give you my advice on this! My 'twin boys' had this same issue!! They sound exactly like your kitties-- very loving and snugly to each other, and then Frankie had a urinary issue so had to go to the vet for a few hours to give a urine sample. (He was fine, just a slight infection) When we got home late in the afternoon, his brother, Clarkie, was petrified of him! Poor Frankie was so confused, and Clarkie ran and hid in the closet and hissed whenever Frankie came close! I kept them separate for overnight, and then let them work it out the next day. I offered treats near to each other, and they finally ate their dinner in close proximity. By Day 2, they were back to normal and have been ever since!! Good luck! I'm sure they'll be back to normal, like my boys very soon! Just wanted to say welcome. And your twins are absolutely adorable!!

Update- it has been 24 hours, and it's getting WORSE!! the cats have always slept in our room with the door closed. Last night we had to keep Ash in our room and Ember got the rest of the house. Both cats yowled ALL NIGHT. Ash because he misses cuddling with his brother all night, and Ember because he wanted in (he probably misses his brother too, darn it cat, he's right here!!). He just about scratched our door down, too. Ember is still freaking out at the sight/smell of Ash. We have tried rubbing a towel on them both, feliway, catnip, etc... I know it's only been one day now, but I am stressed! Combined with Ash peeing on the floor every time he goes (2-4 times per day), it's frustrating!

And if you do this to dogs, the stay at home dog greets the vet dog with a romp and hello, glad you are back greeting. I guess it is like the video of a parent dog teaching the pup to go down the stairs versus how the parent cat swats his/her kitten down the cellar. This was not our experience, sadly. We were never able to get our dogs over a hospitalization one time. We boarded the newer one, we worked with a trainer, and they never stopped fighting. We had to rehome one.

If he's still peeing on the floor, even after being to the vet, my guess is he is still sick, and the other cat senses it. They know something's wrong and they immediately go into self-defense mode. I would check with your vet to see if they have suggestions.

We go through something similar at our house. We have 3 cats a 15 year old female (Mitzi) and two 9 year old siblings Mia & Xander.
No matter which one/ones go to the vet, Mia always has a 3+ day hiss fest with her brother, Xander. Yes, even if it's Mitzi that goes, Xander still gets hissed & snarled at as if it's all his fault. These are deep belly growls/snarls like she's going to rip someone's head off. Luckily, she doesn't bite or attack, she's all "bark" and no bite.
Unfortunately, Xander recently became diabetic and for the past 6 weeks, he's been to the vet for a glucose check about every 1.5 weeks. She has been growling at him more than not. In fact, last night all he had to do was meow and she started growling. Not fun for any of us at 3 in the morning.
To make it worse, none of the cats even have to leave the house. If Mia sees & sniffs one of the carriers, she starts the whole growling/snarling thing when she gets near Xander.
She never hisses, growls or snarls at Mitzi.

We saw a new vet a couple weeks ago and she was chatting about how cats react to one another after one has been to the vet. She mentioned putting a dab of vanilla extract I think on the back of their necks and then they'll both smell the same. Thought it was an interesting suggestion, didn't try it because mine don't seem to care if ones been to the vet.

Do you bathe your cats? If yes, you could try giving them both a bath. Then they will (presumably) smell like normal.
Or perhaps the antibiotic is causing one kitty's scent to be off. Maybe just keep them separated until the antibiotic is over and out of the cats system.

I would actually recommend not keeping them separated. It's further disrupting their routine, which will add to the problem. Let them sort it out; they'll probably avoid each other for a bit and have some dramatic hissing, posturing, and whatnot, but unless anyone's actually getting hurt, I would stay out of it. Treat everything as normal.

Mine love each other so much. They are ten and four. The younger one was a complete jerk to the older one as puppy. He would run past her and bite her tail and fling himself around to her front. She would just sit down and roll him gently with her nose. I think they appreciate each other's company and do like to gang up on the humans. When I feed them, one will wait for the other to get their bowl and then chow as fast as possible.

Perhaps both cats should go to the vet in different carriers and you just don't take one out. Seems like a stupid thing to do, but maybe it would work.

I agree you should let them be together unless one is getting hurt, they will figure it out quicker that way. Our cats always take about 48 hours after being at the vet to be polite to each other. If he is still peeling I would wonder if the antibiotics are working. Have you been using the feliway, we have one cat that feliway makes her very angry, we can't use it because it makes her pee where ever it is plugged in or sprayed. Can you get "rescue remedy". It is a drop you can put on your cat and put some in their water too, it is very relaxing to them. We give it to our cats after the vet and if we are gone over night. It makes one of our cats just zonk out, but it makes then all calmer.
Good luck, and I really think letting the be around each other will get them used to each other quicker.

Thanks everyone! Interesting, I do love the smell of vanilla I may try that next... Do you bathe your cats? If yes, you could try giving them both a bath. Then they will (presumably) smell like normal. Or perhaps the antibiotic is causing one kitty's scent to be off. Maybe just keep them separated until the antibiotic is over and out of the cats system. Ah, I value my life too much to bathe my cats lol. Someone (ahem, DH) left the toilet seat open a month or two ago, and my cats BOTH fell in. I had to give them both baths, and after that experience, I told DH something really horrible would happen if he ever left the toilet seat up again! I agree with you about Ash smelling different due to the antibiotic. Unfortunately, it's not really feasible for me to keep them separate for another 12 days until he's done. I hope to get it resolved before then! I'm glad to hear some of you think this is a good idea... After last night, I've been trying to see how it goes with them not being separated. They are doing OK as long as they aren't within 15 feet of each other. Ash wants cuddles though, and when he approaches Ember, he gets hissed and growled at. I am worried about letting them both be in our room at night! I don't have cats or any advice, but I wanted to tell you I love your cats' names! thank you! It took us a long time to settle on those names, lol. I think their names fit them very well! This was not our experience, sadly. We were never able to get our dogs over a hospitalization one time. We boarded the newer one, we worked with a trainer, and they never stopped fighting. We had to rehome one. That is so sad! I'm sorry So strange... Sometimes animals can recognize someone after being away from them for years, and other times something so small can change everything. Perhaps both cats should go to the vet in different carriers and you just don't take one out. Seems like a stupid thing to do, but maybe it would work. My husband actually suggested that last night, too! I can't decide if that would help, or make it worse! It might be worth a try if nothing else works, at least! I think next time I need to take just one to the vet, I may go ahead and bring them both. Maybe that would prevent this from happening again.

Oh melly, I am so sorry that they are not getting along after a day! I think I did put some vanilla on the top of my Frankie's head, because I read that it works. He smelled pretty good afterwards!! I would try to feed or give them treats them about 3 feet from each other. We give ours canned food twice a day, and I started about that distance the first time. I'm sure both of them are confused right now, but hopefully you will have the happy ending we did! Trust me-- I was so worried they would never get along, but they are totally back to normal!! Hugs!!

Our little Badcat's leg needed to be amputated. He was only at the vets for 24 hrs but the other cats would NOT accept him at all. At the time we had 9 cats who had all grown up together and one of them was even his mother and they just hissed at him and would not let him come near any of them. We were keeping him separate anyway so he could learn to walk on 3 legs but it took a whole month before they accepted him back into the group. Corinne

I have been there and it is a terribly stressful thing ti go through. DH got so anxious he'd yell at the cats to stop hissing, as if that helped any!! Uggh, hang in there!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same for cats. I'm not sure about the baths -- I think it make them both smell weird to each other.

melly your kitties are adorable!!!❤️❤️ Has there been any change today?? Have been thinking about them!! Thanks, Phyllis There has been a little bit of change! They are now okay to be in the same room. If Ash gets too close, or if Ember approaches him, they touch noses, and that's when Ember flips! Lol. He looks like he just smelled the most horrible thing, and hisses a whole bunch. After that, though, he just sits down. He no longer growls or looks like he is going to attack. I have been using vanilla extract and I think that it's helping. Ash is still peeing on the bathroom floor every time, not feeling better yet. He still has about 11 days on his antibiotic. I am really happy with the progress the cats have made, Ember being able to at least tolerate Ash for the most part is great! I still can't wait until they start cuddling again, I can tell Ash really misses it!

Glad to hear there are some baby steps being made!! I hope Ash is feeling better soon-- poor baby must still be hurting, that's why he's going outside of the box. I'm battling a UTI right now, so I know what a pain it is waiting for that antibiotic to kick in!! Hope all is better soon!! It's great to find another kitty loving scrap booker!!
