BYU has banned the man bun. They say it is a distraction to the students! Holy shit, what next?

My favorite quote from a discussion on BYU's grooming standards:
A further examination of the school's dress and grooming standard also revealed that beards, under any circumstances, are not allowed. Which is particularly odd since the school's website states that they follow such a code to be consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Who you know, definitely had a beard. And long hair.

I can see how the "Man Bun Guy" on YouTube would be distracting (with or without his shirt), but the man bun itself, not so much. Sounds like a bunch of admin control freaks to me.

Truly, shits getting out of control. A man bun is no more of a distraction than a woman's bun.

Actually, I don't care what they do as long as they don't try to make me do it too.

Actually, I find it more odd given that Brigham Young had a very healthy beard. But, BYU is a private religious university, so a dress code for both genders doesn't surprise me.

I went through this crap at my religious high school. No makeup, no hair color, no open toed or open heeled shoes, etc, ETC.
Bottom line, if you don't like the rules, don't go there.

I've worked numerous places that limit the length of a man's hair to be above the collar. Is this that different?

I'm pretty sure Jesus would have rocked a mean man bun if they had been in style back then.

Two guys in my Orangetheory class yesterday showed up with teeny tiny ponytails on top of their heads, i guess because they didn't have enough hair for a bun. They both looked like Pebbles from the Flintstones. It was very distracting, more so because 2 men came in with matching hairdos LOL!

When you decide to go to BYU, you have to accept that your university is going to treat you, an adult student, like a child and impose all sorts of rules other schools do not impose upon you. You want to wear a man bun or a utilikilt or swill beer on the weekends, you need to pick a different school.

Oh good gravy. When my local middle schoolers are sporting them I say BYU is late to the party- and a fad has jumped the shark.
Surely they've got bigger controversies than this?

I must live under a rock - I have never heard of, nor seen, a man bun. I feel so sheltered.

I was on a college campus last weekend and there were a few guys that actually looked pretty hot with the man bun. i feel worried about a few things with college life for my daughter, but the man bun is not one of them.

In Europe it is a game to cut man buns off.

I feel for BYU students entering the work force...... there will be SO MUCH other stuff to cause distraction and they will have no experience with being distracted.

It's about time, those man-buns get me all hot and bothered and I can't study. So distracting, like women's cleavage or bra straps.

Holy shit, what next? della I think it's ridiculous but no more than dress codes that drastically limit what girls can wear in the name of "distraction" (i.e., teen boys can't be responsible for their behavior if there are girls not dressed like matrons nearby). If we're going to have ridiculous dress codes, men should have some that apply to them as well.
