Having grown up on a dairy farm, I can attest to the fact that farming can be a really tough way of life. Running a dairy can truly be 24/7 job. I remember a Christmas where my dad spend the evening in the barn with a very sick cow. He wasn't gathered around the tree with us. 30 below wind chill? Work still needs to get done...out you go. You work 7 days--no weekends off. And pretty hard to take a vacation because who milks the cows? Pay your own health insurance, and certainly no company sponsored pension or 401k match. But plenty of benefits too--he truly loved it. And I loved that I could go see my daddy anytime--no waiting until he got home from work. My dad was a cop so we had a lot of missed things while he was on a call. But your story reminded me of my friends parents who owned a cattle ranch. I spent a very cold night with their daughter (my age and a friend) with a birthing mother who was really struggling, taking turns running back and forth to the phone in the house to talk to her dad and the vet who were snowed out. We were just 16 years old. What a long night! I have never been so happy to see a newborn calf in all my life. We hugged that baby so hard! And mama lived too.

Holy wow! My entire income is less than $30,000 a year! I just can't even imagine paying that much in taxes, but I guess things like that are proportionate. I do know that farming is one of the hardest jobs there is, and I'm thankful to our nation's farmers for providing us with food to eat. So, thank you and I wish you bountiful crops!
