I agree with every single word Dottyscrapper said. It is sickening that we as a country are alone in this happening. It is simple logic to figure out what we are doing differently to have these horrific, deadly mass shootings occur on a regular basis. Obviously it is our guns, and the complete and utter freedom of people to possess them. Of yes, I know we have gun control. But it is a joke in my opinion. It isn't near strict enough or we wouldn't have just had the 45th school/college shooting of this year.
And don't tell me only the criminals use the guns and not responsible gun owners. Where do you think the criminals get the guns? Some of them get them from stealing them from responsible gun owners. The only way to change this is to remove the guns from the equation nation wide. Yeah, yeah, I hear all you gun lovers screaming about your 2nd amendment rights from here. Well what about the right of all of those college students to live? What about those rights? What about the rights of all of those people shot in the 45 school/college shootings we have this year alone to live? What about them? What about those beautiful 20 kindergarteners who's young lives were brutally taken from them? At such a young age. What about them? I think the right to live trumps your right to own a gun.
There is no reason we can't adopt what England or Australia have in form of gun control. What we have isn't working. We can at least try it and if it doesn't work, slowly scale it back in and see what does work. What we can't keep doing is go along as we are. Our innocent citizens just keep dying if we do that. And I'm sick of it! Enough is enough. It was enough after the kindergarteners were killed and we should have done it then.

I just saw the UCC President on the news saying the last bus of students was on its way to county fairgrounds to be reunited with family members. Grief counselors are on site to assist those who do not have a student come off the bus .

I would be very, very cautious about believing that at this point. The similar thing that was said after Columbine was later found to be false.

No. nononononononononononono.... Daughter following this on twitter: she said the shooter asked what religion a person was. If they were Christian, they got shot in the head, if they weren't, they got shot in the leg. It's all over the media.

Once again there are no words to express my feelings on a society that allows this to happen time and time again. Blaming it on mental illness is futile. Most if not all other countries have their fair share of mentally ill people but they don't go round shooting people on mass. According to our news this is the 45th school/college shooting this year in the US. I can't imagine what it must be like for the families who are devastated and heartbroken today at the senseless loss of their loved ones. It's just heartbreaking! So well articulated. And full of the sad truth. We need to look at your country's solution.

I didn't get a chance to say earlier but my heart goes out to the victims and their families.
Also from what I remember this has happened before in a situation where the victims are asked what religion they are. I'm Catholic, which means I'm Christian, but I know God would forgive me if I was in a situation like this and he would know I was lying to save my life if I said, "I'm Muslim", or "I'm Atheist" depending on what the gun man looked like. He and I know in my heart I'm Christian and I know he would understand why I would answer this way. Wouldn't it make sense to do this if you were in a situation like this?
If you are Christian, what would you do?

I would think very hard on the words of Jesus that were recorded by Matthew (in chapter 10) 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. 32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

If he looks like an average white male and he's asking I'd say Atheist. Obviously if what Mizindependent wrote is true "Christian" is the wrong answer for today-it'd get you shot in the head. I'm an atheist and I'm unaware of anything about my physical appearance that would tip someone off to that fact Also, there have been many more murders committed in the name of Christianity in America than in the name of atheism.

I've had a migraine brewing most of the day due to the storms we are having here and it's just come back again,it's about a 5 on the pain scale of 1-10 a 10 being the worst pain you've ever felt in your life. I've already taken the prescription medication I have for migraine. I only have 2 doses left for the next 2 weeks. I'm sorry, but I'll have to go for now. Debbie in MD.

I just cannot fathom inaction when there are just so many people dying. After all the little children in Sandy Hook were killed I thought finally something may happen but nothing.
FFS, it makes me really angry. It took one mass shooting in Australia (and the UK after Dunblaine from memory?) for action to be taken. I did not like John Howard however he had the balls to make an unpopular decision knowing it may be the end of his political career and there has not been a mass shooting since.
Thinking of all the victims and their families

How many more before we do something as a country While in this case, it appears that the shooter posted on a public forum, most of the time that doesn't. Happen. So what do you propose that we as a country should do?

The Onion (a satire site) absolutely nails it: ‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly HappensROSEBURG, OR—In the hours following a violent rampage in southwestern Oregon in which a lone attacker killed 10 individuals and seriously injured seven others, citizens living in the only country where this kind of mass killing routinely occurs reportedly concluded Thursday that there was no way to prevent the massacre from taking place. “This was a terrible tragedy, but sometimes these things just happen and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them,” said Ohio resident Lindsay Bennett, echoing sentiments expressed by tens of millions of individuals who reside in a nation where over half of the world’s deadliest mass shootings have occurred in the past 50 years and whose citizens are 20 times more likely to die of gun violence than those of other developed nations. “It’s a shame, but what can we do? There really wasn’t anything that was going to keep this guy from snapping and killing a lot of people if that’s what he really wanted.” At press time, residents of the only economically advanced nation in the world where roughly two mass shootings have occurred every month for the past six years were referring to themselves and their situation as “helpless.”And yes, it is possible to vastly reduce the frequency of these horrific, violent rampages. Is it possible to eliminate them completely? No, of course not. But is that any reason to give up completely, to declare helplessness and hopelessness in the face of a powerful corporate gun lobby, to meekly submit to living in constant fear (Which campus?! Which school?! Is my child okay?!). Is there a parent alive in America today who doesn't feel a heart-stopping sense of dread at the report of yet another school shooting? who doesn't feel a guilty sense of relief upon learning that it was some other school, in some other city, some other state? Not my child, thank God. Well, not this time. An analogy: Speed limits save lives. This has been too well-documented and well-proven to allow for any serious, honest objection. And yes, of course speed limits are a form of regulation, a curtailment of absolute freedom, a form of driver and vehicular control (as are driver's licenses in the first place, after all). But obviously, speed limits do not prevent all speed-related traffic injuries and fatalities. It is simply not possible to prevent and eliminate all possible bad outcomes. But does this mean that we give up on the idea of speed limits altogether? that we throw up our hands in despair, and turn the nation's highways and byways into an unregulated, no-holds-barred, Hobbesian 'war of all against all' free-for-all? Because we cannot completely eliminate speed-related traffic incidents, we should just give up on speed limits? Well, obviously that would be irrational and stupid, and that way would lie madness... When will enough sane and decent Americans (the majority of Americans, I hasten to add) finally stand up and say: 'Enough is enough, and we're not going to take it anymore'? What will it take, I wonder?

I hear you loud and clear, Mystie. If the innocent, cherubic faces of those 6-year-old children who were massacred at Sandy Hook weren't enough to galvanize support for sane and sensible gun control, I'm not sure what would; and I almost despair.
Almost. I'm still not ready to give up completely. I guess I'm too angry to give up without a fight.

This is my community. My son is a student at UCC and was on campus this morning. I was a mental health crisis responder today. This is surreal. I spent the afternoon with many of my amazing coworkers at the fairgrounds, doing what we could to help those who were involved in the UCC tragedy. It was a truly heartbreaking experience, but it was nice to be able to help out and be there for our community. We will continue to provide support in the days and weeks to come. As a mental health provider in a rural community where guns and hunting are a part of the culture, I have so many thoughts.
