I'm trying to pull together my scrap room so I can get back to scrapping and card making -- I took a lot of years off and the room had turned into the junkroom. I've been working hard to clean it out. I'm going to use this old tv armoire as storage for paper and albums. I should have taken a before picture of it, but I didn't think of it, LOL. So I made up a mix of Annie's chalk paint. I like the color, but I think it may be a little bit....bright? clear? nurseryish? Any ideas of how to tone it down a little...or not? It's a little hard to tell in the picture, but the walls are a very very pale violet. Here is the little glass bowl that I used for a color scheme:

Pretty colour! I really like it. You could consider dry brushing it or washing it with white -- it would lighten up and look a bit shabbier.

Beautiful color! I like bright, so would keep it as is, but if you wanted to tone it down, Ashley's idea of a whitewash would work well.

Nice color combination on the inspiration piece. I think it's pretty just the way it is. Will it have open shelves or doors? You could add a lot of white baskets and items to the shelves, and that will tone it down and tie it into your molding. Do you have some fabric that will be used in the room? That would tie things together also.

I think it is pretty and not as bright as the turquoise I have in my room! Want to see a pic when it is all done!

I agree that once there are baskets, etc. on the shelves it will look different. You could also back the shelves with a pattern or textured fabric and that could help. Use spray adhesive to glue wallpaper or fabric to pieces of foam board and you can put it in the back and change it out anytime you'd like a change!

my sister is really into chalk painting right now, and she told me she uses some sort of antiquing paste wax / beeswax product to 'tone down' the brightness of the paint color. I don't remember what exactly it was, but I think it was something like Annie Sloan Dark wax, which you can see used in the pics in this blog post (scroll down towards the bottom to see chalk paint before / after adding the dark wax) chalk paint workshop
eta: here's another link with color samples of before / after waxing with the dark wax.If you try this, you might want to try it on a sample first, to see if you like the color change.

I would wax it with a grey or darker color to keep it from skewing nursery myself. It depends on what accessories you will be using though, if you are using white baskets and stuff then I would use white. For me, I would use black or metal accessories and wax it with a grey. Whichever you choose it is a beautiful piece and the color is lovely!

I agree with others both in regards to the choice of basket changing the colour subtly and using the wax finish or white wash over if you want to tone it tone just a little. Lovely colour - I would probably leave it as is in my scrap room!

Thanks for the reassurance! I've never painted furniture and it was such a difference from the wood finish that I panicked a little bit. Now that I've had a day to get used to it, it looks better. I'm not all that good at pulling together colors. There are doors and shelves, although I don't have to to put the doors back on. There's a really pretty stenciled cabinet door in the top link from crimsoncat05. Maybe I could stencil something on the doors and paint the raised molding. I don't have anything on the window, so maybe I can pull something together with fabric. It's only a single window in the room, so that wouldn't be too expensive. I've also had an idea in the back of my mind to hang some of my kids' early artwork in the room -- they both made some cute ceramic wall pieces years ago in elementary school. Anyhow, this room (and the piece) are my October goal. Thank you all so much for the help!!!! You've given me some great suggestions (and I get to use a new smiley -- they work in quick reply now. Yay!)

I think it's beautiful as is. But like you, I often have to let it be and get use to it.

Personally, I like the armoire color against the beautiful pale violet walls. Once you add your supplies, it will not seem as bright. I suggest not altering the piece until you've lived with it for a few months; I predict it will look stunning in your revamped space. Happy scrapping!

Oh it's so pretty! I love the color scheme, purple tones are my favorite. The little bowl is so unique. I would also leave the piece alone and try it with the lighter baskets or foam board backing as suggested. I think you will be happy with it just as it is. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! After a week, I love the color. I decided to dry brush the molding on the panels with a little bit of white and stencil the door. That's my plan for the weekend I'll post a picture when I finish. purplebee I never would have guessed that you like purple

Love the color. Bright and happy. Once it's filled, it won't look so bright. Good eye on the color combo!

I love it and look forward to seeing the shelves filled with goodies. If you ever decide to put fabric on the back wall it's easy to change when you use spray glue just on one surface , either the wall or fabric.

Yay! I finished my armoire. I dry brushed the molding and trim with old white. Then I stenciled the thistles on the front and outlined them with a light brown pen. Two coats of wax and buffing gave it a nice protective coating. New door knobs, contact paper on the shelves, and voila! (I just noticed the golf ball in the picture, stupid cats.) Here's a closer look at the stencil and detail (sorry for the size, I'm having trouble with photobucket today)
