My Fitbit wouldn't fit around my ankle- so I'm stuck on this issue Definitely gaming the system! It's good they're moving, but no way some of those points should count for the real thing. If the foot stomping was on a treadmill desk I'd count it as walking, maybe even running. But an under desk peddle does not equal cycling!

This is why I don't understand the popularity of step counters. It just seems so inaccurate. They're actually quite accurate for those of us who don't have little pedal thingies under our desks. My understanding is that it is purely steps so any other type of movement needs to be input manually. Is that incorrect? I don't walk, run or cycle for excercise.

I can fake out my fitbit my waving my arm around. That's cheating.
I can add actual movement and activity to my day by marching in place while I'm waiting for a big copy job at the copy machine. That's not cheating.
In my opinion - just because I'm not making an aggressive effort doesn't mean I'm not adding activity to my day.

My current Fitbit has a HR monitor so it's good for pretty much all exercise. My last one was stictly an activity tracker for running, walking. Any additional cardio I did was tracked with a separate HRM. Either way, for its intended use, it's fairly accurate - the calorie deficit it calculated based on input coincided with my rate of weight loss. eta - the Fitbit is not accurate for cycling which is why the whole pedalling thing is cheating regardless.

So again why is a step counter needed? Why not just a heart rate monitor.
