I just got done lurking on 2 different planner sites, resetgirl and another one....trying to understand planners.....
CAUTION: some of this might seem snarky, and it by no means was meant to be, so go easy on me.....I am just trying to understand..... but I just absolutely do not understand the necessity of multiple planners or embellishments/date stamps/etc. for a planner. Please let me know how/why/when some of this stuff is used.....
I get why you would have a planner...appts, hockey, ballet, MD appts, etc. (I use my phone for that stuff, and my kiddos are grown and at work I use outlook calendar but everyone's organization technique is different and I am not making fun of anyone).....but what about the other stuff? The date stamps, washi, stickers, colored ink pens, etc. One planner person (I guess they are frequently called "plannerds" even has a washi ring, full of washi tape.
Do you carry all of that stuff around with you? Do you have a little planner bag that goes with the stuff, that is in your purse, so that when you need it, or make an appt, that you pull this or that out and use it..., or do you use this stuff maybe on Sunday night, when you are planning your week?
Do you decorate your planner fronts? How do you carry them around? Every time I put something decorated in my purse, or bag, it gets a corner bent, lipstick on it, etc. I do not understand how physical embellishments stay on it when you are carrying it around a lot.
Finally, some people have multiple planners. How many is that/ how come? I get school and work and children, but how do you keep everything straight if there are multiple locations for your appts, etc? I do get maybe something special for planning a wedding or moving....and AGAIN, just me, I would need all in one place so that I do not get overbooked....you know....MD apt when I am supposed to be a room mom or something.....
Any insight would be great, but please, this was not meant to be snarky or disparaging in any way, so please be nice!
Oh, and Happy Friday!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm no help, but I've kind of wondered many of these same things. If nothing else, you have company in your wondering!

I use paper planners. I cannot use electronic planners, and believe me I have tried. They are not my thing. I do use colored pens and a few stamps here and there (for birthdays and anniversaries). I also have trash can stickers for trash days. But other than that, my planner is clean and easy to read. I have seen planners where they are so filled with stuff that I don't know how they function. It would stress me. But if they enjoy it, that's great. That's for them but not me. I LOVE color so I do like to see the colored pens and few stamps/stickers for my pop of color but that's it.
I do not carry my planner with me. My girls are away in college, and I no longer work. So my appointments each week are maybe 3 or so but that's it so I don't need to lug it around. If I schedule things when I am out and I discover I have something already in that time slot, I reschedule one of them. Doesn't happen often.
And the multiple planner thing--I don't. I don't know how I would keep up with that or why I would need that. Hope this helps a bit anyway.

I use a paper planner, too. I've never been able to keep track with my computer or phone. Mine is 8x10, and came with a pretty cover. I have some cute decorated paper clips that I use to mark certain weeks. I also use washi tape keep track of the CSA season and mark out the school vacation weeks. I use a few stickers and stamps, but mostly my planner is crammed full of notes, appts, deadlines, and all the other crap that my life consists of. With too much decorative stuff on it, my planner would be unusable. I need to see what I need to do.

The only stickers I have in mine are birthday and the like that I stuck on last January. I use a couple of highlighters and whatever pen or pencil is handy. I use one planner for myself and the kids. It stays on my desk. I don't use washi tape or little flags or things that stick out over the edges. I do cover some of the pages ( just stapled on ) with school calendars, activity schedues, and stuff. It's neat and functional, but maybe not as fun as some of the ones on pinterest.

I became interested in planners over 2 years ago before it became this big monster of a trend that it is. I needed something to write down everything because my phone just wasn't doing it for me. I prefer paper and pens. Just like I prefer paper and photos instead of digital scrapbooking. I like to see it and touch it and turn pages. I started by buying a Filofax. I learned more than I thought possible about inserts, dividers, various pens, paper clips, charms, stickers and on and on. I followed people on Instagram and would be totally confused as to why they needed not just one planner, but several. Then they started collecting planners. Different colors, brands, styles. They would change out their planners monthly or weekly. Talk about over complicating things! Fast forward to today and now all of the scrapbooking world has caught on to this trend. Now there is even MORE stuff available for the planner community. You can actually sub to a monthly sticker club and they color coordinate the stickers according to the color of the month in the Erin Condren planner. It's crazy!! But I suppose it's become a hobby for some. I have an Erin Condren planner. I write things down and it keeps me organized. Super simple. I save my hoarding and obsessively buying paper products strictly for scrapbooking.

i can echo what has already been written. i have one planner that stays on my desk at home and it contains all of our appointments, to do lists, everything. i carry a small notebook with me in my purse and if needed, i can scribble something there and transfer it to my planner when i return home. no, i do not carry all the extra stuff with me and often i am lucky if i can find a pen in my purse. i couldn't stay organized without ONE planner but I also couldn't stay organized with several planners.

I have an Eric Condren planner for 2015 but switched to a Plum Planner for next year. By Pinterest standards, my planners are naked. No flags, no bulky clips, nothing that sticks out. I write down appointments and household plans but I'm also using it for some bullet journalling to record daily happenings and gratitude. I might use a little washi or stamp a bit but that's about it. I can't see that I would ever subscribe to a planner kit. I don't carry it around with me - it stays on my dining room table and I'm likely to check it at the end of the day so I know what's on the schedule for tomorrow and jot down a few things for the day.
My life has never been busy enough that I would need more that one planner.

I can't imagine "swapping out" planners, but then again, I carry the same purse for months on end. I guess whatever works for you and makes you happy!

I think some people love the idea that a planner can also be such a creative outlet. For me, anything I throw away shouldn't have a lot of time money and effort involved in it. I have a little gold planner I bought at the beginning of the year. It was cute and I got some cute stickers to go in it. I probably spent $12 on all of it. I wrote down the first three months and was done. I don't even know where it is. My baby graduated in May and I retired the next week. (It was a great month!) My husband is great with doing his share of crap around the house, so I don't have that much going on the I have to keep track of. I guess i just realized I don't need a planner. I have a very calm life (right now). If I need to remember something I put it on the side of the fridge (calendar) and I am good to go.

I've just ordered a Foxydori as a sort of planner/journal. I run my entire life, work and home, via my tech but sometimes it's nice to have somewhere to brainstorm and journal "manually". I do decorate it...not sure why, it just appeals as a creative outlet I guess.

I just wrote a blog post about how I'm a scrapper who doesn't use a fancy day planner just a regular boring one, LOL! #sorrynotsorry I have the same questions as the OP but I think, like a lot of creative outlets, it doesn't have to make sense. I also think it's been a big money maker for a lot of people

Thanks! Michelle I am also one who switched from an EC to a PP. I used EC for 3 years or so. I switched because: 1. I was looking for a change. 2. Price. 3. I have heard PP's are amazing, and I wanted to see what they were all about. 4. I like that you have a choice of weekly pages (I chose hourly and LOVE it). 5. It's a tad smaller. I do not like the PP covers as well but how often am I staring at the cover? It's the inside I use. Overall, I am very happy I switched but beware it takes at least 4 weeks to get your planner once you order.

It's like altered art. It's there because it's fun. I have more than one planner and I use them for different things. I may swap them out depending on my mood or the season. I am not sure. My favourite are my LV one and my pastel ones. I like leather better than vinyl but I do have a very nice Filofax one, too, that isn't leather.
It's just something fun to do!

Like @patter said, I changed primarily because of weekly page choice (weekly spread line works for me). I also liked that it was cheaper. And that I could add pages like "to do lists" for every month. I just checked their website and planners ordered now are shipping between Nov.2 and Nov. 9.

If you are picking a planner, make sure you get one large enough for your needs. I have 2 smaller ones that are go anywhere. The larger ones are quite big and heavy. The larger (A5 size) are easier to write in, though. Plus I am left handed so having more room for my hand to write in a regular planner is easier.
These are just my observations....

I use only one planner at a time. I combine both personal and work into it, usually using a different color ink to tell me which is a work meeting and which is a personal appointment. Its main use is to be a planner. At the end of the day, I write in notes about what happened during the day, sometimes taping/gluing in paper ephemera, and sometimes I doodle and do a little sketch in it. I occasionally add stickers or washi tape. I wind about 5 different washi tapes around an old credit card, and it easily slips in one of my planner pockets, along with a couple of sticker sheets. That and a multi-color pen is all I need. By the end of the year, my planner is a little diary.
I also use a bound planner. I tried binder planners and I didn't like having all the loose pages at the end of the year.

katladythat is a good point about a bound planner vs. a binder planner, especially considering you journal in it and then have a diary at the end of the year. i like the approach you describe.

I have the MAMBI planner. It works well for me. I did buy stickers for the "headings". It says "morning - afternoon - evening" and I needed different sections for work, personal and time (track hours spent on clients as I bill hourly). I also like that I can use a different color heading for each day. It helps me separate them when just glancing. I try and keep everything in this one planner. I also bought the pockets so I can keep papers and receipts and other things. I occasionally add a sticker on a birthday or something but I keep it fairly simple. I take it with me and use it at work so need it to stay fairly professional. It has helped me stay organized.
I do think the other people use it more as a diary or as a creative outlet. I heard one person describe it as an art journal for type A personalities.

I don't use a paper planner for appointments as I like to use ICalendar and schedule reminders, also sync arcs various devices. However I did buy a Travellers Notebook as a sort of 'note central' so I can keep track of lists. I have 3 notebooks inside - general to do list which isn't time sensitive, shopping list, and then a 3rd one where I keep track of ideas for creative projects. The only thing I decorated was the covers for the notebooks as they were all craft. Like 950nancy if I'm going to throw something away, i don't want to spend a lot of time and money on it

Marshalls had great spiral note pads that were about 2.5 inches wide and 11 inches long. The covers were a thick plastic. I bought on for grocery lists, and it works really well. I do love a list, but most of my lists fit on sticky notes. Now I have thousands of those.

I haven't read the replies 'cause I'll forget my answers, LOL, but I had all the same questions as the OP!
From what I've gathered, people change out their planners like one would a purse. Just like you'd get tired of only owning one purse...
People that have multiple planners also sometimes use them for multiple areas of their life. Like one for their business, one for school, etc. I asked Christy Tomlinson about her multiple planners and she responded with a list of all her businesses and she uses a planner for each one which makes sense to me. I guess I would just have sections but she likes a whole different book. I asked her if she worked in each one on a different day and she said no. I can't imagine how having to get into all those books is helpful but it's her life. ha!
On the decorating, I think most people leave the decorations (stickers, etc.) at home and do that one or two days a month. They carry their actual planner with them but not the stuff to decorate it. I have two different planners - haven't started using either yet because I am so inclined to type everything on my computer but I do want to use my planner to plan out my creative business details. My friend just got the Get To Work Book by Elise Blaha and it rocks! I saw it in person this week and I want it now.

I use a completely custom half letter size Midori style notebook that I designed for myself. I cut the leather, made the booklets and designed the inserts for my needs. I do not really decorate my planner on a regular basis (minimal at best) but I find when I do I tend to use it more since it is pretty. I work full time, go to school and have a son in school so I have lots going on and keep track of everything there. I carry my planner with me most of the time (it is in my purse) but leave the decorations at home.
I also bullet list notable activities in it for my PL since I am so far behind.

I have struggled for years and years with finding planner peace. I tried the 3 ring set ups with the times down the side and it never worked for me. Enter Bullet Journaling. When I discovered this system, I was hooked. I use a lined composition book that I get from Walmart for 50 cents. I cover the front and back and if I feel inclined, I decorate some of my pages. Not usually, but here and there. I use it more as a brain dump. I am a habitual list maker and I got to the point that putting it on the fridge wasn't working anymore. I love my Bujo, it goes everywhere with me and the best part is that there is no wrong way to do it. You figure out what works for you and go from there! As for multiples, I tried it but it just isn't necessary yet. Not sure it ever will be but all I know is that this works for me and has kept me on track when no other system has.

If you are a planner person you may want to hold off a bit ordering your 2016 planner. Close to My Heart has a new planner for 2016 and it is available December 1st. I have not seen it in person yet but saw pictures from the convention on Australia last week posted on-line. I tried to embed the a photo with no luck. link to Close to My Heart Planner
