UPDATE #2 - 11/23/15 - I have officially gone through all 20 photo boxes and sorted them into the five categories - Kate, Nick, Family, Travels and Holidays. I make a little card like the one I've put below for each set of photos. I still haven't touched the 4 full Cropper Hoppers filled with photos (one is empty), but I have thrown away 5 waste baskets full of bad or unnecessary photos. I still have to go through my scraproom and my bedroom to round up any photos that are stashed in those areas. I think once I have finished up the sorting into categories, I'm going to put things away until after the holidays because the next step is putting those categories into date order. I need to make for positive sure that I've got all the photos pulled together that I can get my hands on. So, the photos below are where I stand with my project right now.

UPDATE #1 - 11/6/15 - I'm making progress. I'm dividing photos into five categories. Kate, Nick, Family, Travels and Holidays. There have been a few that I wasn't quite sure where the photos should go - cancer camp. Nick's box since he had cancer or family box since we all went to camp? Group vote was Family. I am physically touching each photo and deciding if it is worth saving. If it's blurry or it's a single photo of some kid at one of my kids' birthday parties that I can't remember their name - trash. There are a couple of events that I got rid of all of the photos. We went to a Harlem Globetrotter's game back in 2007. 90% of the photos are of the basketball players on the floor, but nothing of their tricks - all of them trashed.
I have gone through five boxes so far and am feeling good about my progress. I'd like to have them all at least sorted into their category by Christmas because they will have to be moved out of my dining room then for the holidays. Once they are all sorted into a specific category, then I will go back and put them in chronological order.
I may have a subsection box for each of the kids' birthday parties. I was the queen of themed parties. Wizard of Oz, Survivor, an old fashioned fire truck came to one. I took hundreds of photos of those events. I think it will be easier if I put them in separate boxes. I'll keep you updated as I continue to go along. Thanks for the words of encouragement!!

I posted this photo a couple of weeks ago. This is most of the photos (but not all) that I need to put in some semblance of order.
I picked up the top clear box with the white lid from the chair and started going through envelopes. In one envelope I found photos of my daughter when she was two and my son when he was a year old. They are almost five years apart in age! There is absolutely no rhyme or reason as to how my photos were stuck in these boxes. My game plan was to sort them all chronologically and then I became overwhelmed and put the box back.
Yesterday I called my 19 year old DD and said - I'm being totally serious here. When I die do you think you'll keep my photos or just chunk them because I don't want to take the time to organize them if they're going to be thrown away. She was very sweet and told me that of course she is going to keep them. She will divide them up with her brother when I'm gone. We talked about what would be the best way for me to sort them.
So, I'm kind of taking a Becky Higgins approach. I'm sorting by Holidays, Kate, Nick, Travel and Family. After that is sorted out I will put them in chronological order. I have a slip of paper that sticks up out of each envelope that states what the event is, the date, people in the photos and a place for special stories. It took me 3 hours to do the first box because I opened every envelope and threw away bad or duplicate photos. I'm sure my speed will pick up as I get going on this more. I still have 19 boxes and then the four Cropper Hopper cases (one is empty) to sort through, but I feel positive that I've at least started it.
I'll keep you updated as time goes on! Thanks!
