My little granddaughter turned two in September. I asked her mom if she would like the Elf on a Shelf set (book and doll) and she said, no way. I think that elf is creepy. LOL She said instead, she would like to give the little one a new book every night for those days when the elf thing is going on, then they'll be in rotation for the rest of the year. She and my son read to the little one every night and during the day. I know she has the Very Hungry Caterpillar and similar books like that. I'd love to send a set of books to them that will cover at least part of the nights. I am so not up to date on kid's books. I have found on Amazon some sets of Little Golden Books, but I'm not sure if those would hold her attention for as long as the stories are. What do you all think, those of you that have little ones of that age or exposure to them? I found a set of 12 books but they're all about the movie Frozen, and I'd like something with a little more variety than that. Do you know of any set of 'fun' books for that age that will not break the bank? And where to get them. I'm just out of the loop for shopping for little ones, but I am so thankful that they do read to her all the time.

Pete the Cat series, Mo Willims- Pigeon series, anything by Laura Numeroff would be good ones to start with.

I second the Sandra Boynton books! They're great read aloud books for little ones - funny and whimsical a bit different from other books. My kids LOVED them!

Amy Krausse Rosenthal's books are fun for both parents and kids. Little Hoot is an owl who wants to go to bed at a reasonable hour, but his parents want him to stay up all night like a good owl. Little Oink is a neatnik piggy, and then there is Little Pea who wants to eat veggies, but his parents say he has to eat his candy first. She has quite a few books, and most all of them are fun for kids that age. Yes Day was a favorite for my son for years.
We also liked the Boynton books. If you start looking at Boynton and AKR books on Amazon, you'll get suggestions for other books that are similar. A few titles off the top of my head Giggle, Giggle, Quack, Goodnight Gorilla, Is your Mama a Lama?, Ricahrd Scary books, If you give a mouse a cookie, If you give a moose a muffinFreight Train, Jamberry. So many fun books.

My kids loved Sandra Boynton books when they were her age. I was just going to come here and suggest these! I bet you could find enough for every day of the holiday season. These books are great- I'm a big fan of "Hippos Go Berserk" myself.

You can't go wrong with the little golden books. I have maybe a hundred of them. Saggy baggy elephant is one my favorites.

If you don't mind used, check out thriftbooks.com or abebooks.com They both have great children's categories and I get books for DS for $1-3 all the time. I suggest only buying the books in the good, excellent or new categories. Shipping is free with low minimums (usually just a few books). Thrift stores are other great places to find them.
TJMaxx also often has a decent selection of discounted books.
At 2, she would love any interactive book, like a lift-the-flap book. The Little People ones are faves around here.
DS also loved the Corduroy books at that age. Corduroy Goes to the Doctor was a favorite. There's a whole series of board books featuring him.

Since she is only 2 I believe most of the Golden Books will be too wordy for her to attend to. I agree the Sandra Boynton books are great for a two year old as are Todd Parrs books. They are both colorful, silly, whimsical and age appropriate.

Another Sandra Boynton lover here. My DD has started reading them on her own now. SB also has a few CDS that we LOVE. The music is enjoyable for adults and kids. Our favorites are Philadelphia Chickens and Frog Trouble. She has many famous actors and musician singing the songs.

a set of books by Dr Suess can't be beat.
They are terrific for language development and phonemic awareness.
And they are heaps of fun.

You have received some great suggestions. For future reference, you might look at this list www.txla.org/groups/2x2The books on the list are suggestions for kids from age 2 to second grade. Look at previous years as well as the current listing for suggestions.

I know she's a girl but my daughter lives these books just as much as my son! There are some books about a Little Red Truck. If you search that you will find them. The golden books are too long for a 2 yr old. There are so many good books! Great gift!

a set of books by Dr Suess can't be beat. They are terrific for language development and phonemic awareness. And they are heaps of fun. Those were my first thought, actually. My father was a teacher and taught me my alphabet by the age of two, using Dr. Seuss's ABC book. Big A, little a, what begins with a? I also learned to read at a very young age. I was actually looking for a 'set' of mixed books that are age appropriate. I will check out the recommendations you all have shared and I thank you for those! I love being able to give books as a gift and know that they will actually be read to her and with her over and over again. I've known many parents that don't regularly read to their kids and that makes me so sad.

My son & I loved "The Bear" books. Adorable illustrations, fun rhymes & good stories. We had the regular versions, but here's a set of board books: Bear and Friends: Bear Snores On; Bear Wants More; Bear's New Friend (The Bear Books) www.amazon.com/dp/1481430335/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_UW4pwbBSQ2ZJG

We like to read some longer books starting at around 18 months-2 years of age. At first we don't get through the whole book, but I think even reading a part book a night is a good way to build attention spans and to help young children learn to follow a story. My kids that age love and loved: - any and all kinds of alphabet or word books. Great transition to learning to read, too! - these classic novel adaptations for toddlers and young children. - any of the Sam bear books - my kids love those thick cardboard chunky books that come in box sets, usually at Chapters. My MIL and SIL love giving them to our kids. They are usually word-book style... just four or five pictures/words per little book.

Scardy Squirrel is a cute series too.
Tomie de Paola has some beautiful drawings in his books. He has several Christmas books.
Looking on Pintrest you will see 24 Christmas books wrapped to be opened 1 a night. DD and her DH have adopted this to 4 books - 1 for each Sunday of Advent. You re-wrap books for next Christmas season.
If you have a Robert in the family, highly recommend Sandra Boynton Fifteen Animals. We give it to all "Robert" families!!!

I did do the Christmas books when DD was young. It turned out to be fabulous because we now have a great collection of Christmas books to pull out each year. We never rewrapped them or even repeated it - once was enough. Some that I remember are:
The Night Before Christmas (I always make sure I'm getting the version that wishes a Happy Christmas at the end) How the Grinch Stole Christmas Polar Express Velveteen Rabbit There were several with her favorite characters that year. Some local writers books - it is always fun to recognize the places that are written about. Several versions of the Biblical Christmas story. I think we started with a Thanksgiving book.

Our library has a gift shop that sells books donated from people or from the library. I go in there about once a month to find books for my son. Last week I spent $6.50 and bought 6 books, including Windows 8 for Dummies. They always have a great selection of kids books, especially for the smaller kids. That might be a place to try out and you might get lucky and find a unique book.
