I can "hear" the frustration in your post. But I also "know" you from posts here... you will figure this out and make it work somehow. It just sucks to have to surmount so many obstacles.
Oh, and good luck on the exam!

I am really sorry. I have watched my sister and her husband go through very similar hard times, when it just felt like the hits kept coming and they would never get on their feet again.
Long story short, things are much better for them, and a lot of it had to do with my sister going back to school. So you are making the right choices, and despite the setbacks, things will get better! This time will pass and you will be looking back at it from a whole other perspective sooner than you think. Hang in there!

No judgments here. I think nearly everyone experiences stuff like this. Dh had surgery in the spring and was off work for 9 weeks. We used our savings bridging the gap. No sooner did he go back that my hours got cut and I didn't get brought back up until a month ago. We are really struggling to catch back up and a broken down car would sink us right now.
Last winter some relatives had the worst possible time. At one point all three of their cars broke down. He's a mechanic so he was working on cars non stop for weeks. One vehicle broke down TWICE in THREE days! Two seperate issues. So while they are throwing money at the cars, in that time frame, every single appliance they owned broke down. Dishwasher, stove/ oven, fridge, hot water heater, and furnace and washing machine and dryer. All of them! Sometimes more than one in a day! They have a wood stove, so they made do there. They had a dishwasher and washing machine/dryer that they had bought for another relative and they no longer needed so they were covered there. A nieghbor helped with the fridge situation. But they still had to fix the hot water heater and stove, as well as at least two cars. it was painful for them.
Good luck with your situation!

If you live near me (I'm in VA), I'm happy to loan you a car for a few weeks. It's a nice Sienna in great shape. Just haven't gotten around to selling it yet. PM me. If not, and you are religious, many churches do this same thing.
Congratulations on your new career and I hope something good happens.

You can often rent a car at enterprise for around $30 for the day. They will come pick you up and bring you home if that helps.

We just can not make any progress. I feel like if anything goes well and we look like we're going to get back on track money wise, something happens. Last Friday I finished up Real Estate school. I've been excited to start the new career and I've set business goals that put us back on a more firm footing inside of six months. I felt positive about things. Today my husband's crappy car wouldn't start. It needs replaced. We knew it, but I needed it to last just two more months until I got going and sold a house or two. No. It dies today, when I can't even get licensed for three weeks because I have to wait for my background check to come back. We could throw money at it again. But there's no point. He has to have a car. I have to go take my state exam tomorrow and the test is an hour away from home. DH has to get to work. I just feel like I'm banging my head against a concrete wall. No matter what money decision we make, it's always the wrong one. (If anyone says "This is why we have an emergency fund and a car replacement fund" I'm going to block you. Don't even go there. Your life is different from mine and that's all I'm going to say about that.)A-freaking-men! I'm so sorry. I was excited when we refinanced our home. It would be about $300 less a month. My husband's commuter car died! Same situation as yours! We've had so many medical expenses this year too. I understand and I get it! You are venting not asking for advice.

You have my complete sympathy and empathy.
In 2014 in the space of 3 weeks, my van lost its transmission and my DD's Saturn Ion lost its transmission. I was desperate for a vehicle after the van died because DD couldn't drive a rental and her car was in the shop getting the under warranty repairs done on it . GM had given me a rental car to drive while Dd's car was waiting to be repaired, but she couldn't drive that rental car either because of her age. In a panic, I was persuaded to give up my van and buy a used car. I really didn't want to, but I was under so much pressure, I did. Then DD's car died, so she got my newish car and I was left without a vehicle.
For us, my brother's offer to let me use his Expedition was a lifeline. He only used it to pull his toy trailer and he didn't need it right then. It cost the world to drive,so I only used it when I HAD to go somewhere. I felt like I had to have something since I had a grandparent who had a terminal illness. Still, I wish I could have kept my van.
I hope you're able to find a way to hold off buying anything until you're able to get working. Buying under the gun really sucks.

I am so sorry. Times are definitely tough right now. We have been very lucky to have had a steady income all of our married life and I still feel anxious about finances. It. Is. Tough.
Congrats on your real estate license! I have a girlfriend that just got hers last year, and after a couple of rough months figuring it all out, she is rocking it! You will, too. :-)
ETA-I see that you haven't taken the test yet...sorry-good luck on that!

I feel for you. I recently had to help DD get a new car when her old one couldn't be fixed. Then DH's car got totaled by someone smashing into it while he was at work (thankfully, it was a co-worker and there is insurance and all, but still...) and the car we were saving for DS suddenly up and took a fatal blow to the transmission.
So...THREE CARS all dead. I don't know about you, but I don't have an emergency fund that covers three cars, and every time I get my savings built back up something major happens. Won't kill us, but it does make things difficult.

Good luck to you!
We did the used car circuit and seriously $15 grand for a 4/5 year old car that had over 40,000 was ridiculous......we went with a new Honda $24, 000 for a sporty manual trans. And they seem to last forever.

Congratulations on passing your exam My dh is a realtor ... my advice to you is to go with the most recognizable brokerage ... he is with ReMax here in Calgary ... the name alone makes customers feel more secure

Love the update! And if you have a Carmax in your area, I'd try them. You know the price up front. You can research the blue book value and see how close that price is. They're usually pretty close if not right on the mark. The last few cars we've purchased came from them. The only reason my Mini Cooper wasn't is that the dealer who had it on their lot (used) worked with me just like the Carmax folks did. Price up front, which was close to the blue book value but a bit above. I pushed them down closer to that value and signed on the dotted line. Keep your wits about you, as you are, and keep at it!

We bought our last van from Carmax. I have to say, it was a pretty painless process. The last vehicle we bought came with rounds of negotiating between us and the salesman and the manager. Then there was the paper work. It took hours! I think we were in and out of Carmax in under an hour (we knew what vehicle we wanted) AND we had the license plate done as well. I'd do it again. Good luck with the job--money troubles just suck the life from you.

Congratulations on passing your test! That's awesome.
I'm shocked by the dealership that wouldn't give you specifics without "committing". That's nuts. I would never deal with them.
If you have a Costco membership, they offer discounts on used cars, too. DD bought hers through the Costco program.
