I don't know why but I have personally never been a fan of using
old boxes. Maybe it's the energy of the freshness it lacks that
I feel or something like that.
I do think it's a great idea for the kicks aspect of it though, and SO did it with all of dd's gifts last year. We put her new DS gift into her
old DS box. And he wanted each gift to look like a different
shape or size so it wouldn't be a give away.
I'm hoping he doesn't agree on doing that again this year because it was a little too much.
It would probably be different with family who hasn't gotten used to the boxes. I just felt it was weird for the immediate 3 of us to use boxes on each-other we know so well with.
SO's family does this too and maybe that's another reason why I don't vibe with it, because everyone is in on it so the priceless reactions have long gone.
But for ideas on weird boxes still and always will sound fun and getting the reactions out of people are priceless with it.
I used an advent calendar to hide a gift card in for my mom.
She had to open the windows to find it. I used a used up one but maybe next time I will use a new one that still had the chocolates in them, so when the receiver takes the chocolates out they will see the card or certificate ( the bigger the better cause more hints for the windows to show )
DD wanted a Pokemony bank from Target, but I was afraid she would break it.
So I got her one of those banks from the "gifts for him" end cap that has a digital counter to track your money put in and I'm going to alter it with a Pokemon theme and put shred inside with Pokemon cards.
So when she opens it up she will see the bank box picture on it with not much interest since it's not her style, then get surprised when she takes it out.
You can even go as far as getting something on the cheaper side and hiding the gift in the item itself.
Like something you know the receiver wouldn't use and they may think it's a gag box and then they open it to see what's really inside and they realize it's the item that was on the box. And then you can hide the main gift inside the item.
In order to liven up the gags again in our family this is probably what we would have to do.
