We gather at my mom's house for Christmas Eve dinner and gifts. I always make 2 big pans of lasagna. My mom makes an awesome wine salad to go with it and my brothers bring garlic breads and wine. I thought it was great that we did something so different for dinner. After reading this thread, I guess we weren't so different after all. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

My mom used to cook a really big meal every year, but a few years ago she started having some minor health problems and just didn't feel up to the big all day cook-a-thon. She decided to make a vegetable soup. So I thought - hey why don't each of the daughters and DIL make a soup and we'll have a 'soup kitchen' Christmas? So we've been doing that for the last 5 or 6 years now. We each make a big pot of soup so there is a good selection and you can have a small bowl of each. My mom makes pottery, so she makes a big selection of bowls thoughout the year. We each get our pick of a new bowl for the year (which is also fun because sometimes we have to argue who is getting THAT one that everyone loves) and chow down! It's really neat because we each do something totally different from the other and we all bring a bread that goes with our particular soup. Then of course we each bring a different dessert.

ILs do a Thanksgiving repeat with a cheap ham thrown in (shank portion, not spiral cut, no glaze) The turkey is usually deep fried though, so it's lovely. My family has changed things up over the years. Growing up we did snack foods, chips, crackers, dips, spreads, deli meat, veggie and fruit trays, etc. When we were all grown ups we decided we could be doing more. We've done prime rib, pork roulade, and ham. We try to mix up the sides. This year, I think I might talk them into my new favorite way to cook potatoes: gruyere and smoked gouda scalloped potatoes. It's super easy and tastes very fancy and rich.
