I have downsized and changed my decorating style over the last 35 years. DH does not care I have a 4' vintage aluminum tree my DD bought me last year. I only used th4" tree last year and truly missed my big Christmas tree, but we were had a 2 week home remodeling project which lasted 2 months last fall. This year my sister found me a 9' silver tree and I gave our 9' green tree to one of our DDs. I have collecting Shiny brites for about 4 years and prefer to decorate retro with a few natural touches. I did clear a closet and store all my Christmas decorations there. DH had hip replacement in January. When he pulled the boxes from attic last December I knew that time for me to make room so I made it work.

This year as I was bringing up decorations, I purged again. I konmarie'd them I guess. I really only kept stuff I truly loved and enjoyed, which it turns out was not that much... I'd never heard of this before so had to look it up....just spent an interesting half hour reading about the KonMarie method. Yes, I downsized some on Christmas decorations last year so now there's a lot less stuff to put up, gather dust, take down and put back into storage even though we still have all our favourites out.

I honestly hate Christmas. Its just making work for yourself,,,drag the shit out, set the shit up, put the shit away. Can you tell I'm n a pissy mood? Scoot over. I want to sit on the "pissy mood" and "I hate Christmas" bench with you. I hate shopping any time of the year, especially at Christmas. I hate decorating the damned tree and the house. If DH asks one more time when "we" are going to put the tree up, I may smack him with it.

Like others, I used to decorate the whole house - living room, kitchen, guest bath, dining room. About 5 years ago, I got rid of most of my decorations (even before the kondomari craze).
I traded out my big tree for a tabletop one that sits in the basement with all the lights on. Some years I don't even put this out. Now the ornaments and most of the few living room decorations I kept are stored in the entertainment unit. Easy out and easy put away.
I have a few larger items (like the wreath for the mantle) that live upstairs necessitating trips up and down the steps. It's kinda funny you posted this because my task for today is to clean out my first floor master bedroom closet to make enough room for these few things so when I put them away at the end of the month, they will be on the right floor.
The outside wreaths, lights and 2 small trees that flank the front door reside in the garage. Again easy to get out and put away.

Growing up, decorating was a 2 or three day chore. The tree was fake and had those individual branches you had to put on the trunk. I had to sort, group, and then hand them off. At some point, assembling the whole tree became my job. It really sucked when some of those branches lost their markings. Then there was taking all my mom's owls off the entertainment center (our equalivant of a mantle in a house with no fireplace) and putting out all of the Christmas decorations she had - the numerous snowmen that seemed to multiply in storage, the navitity set, the old ceramic tree, etc. Plus we had window clings, a set for each window in the living room (4 windows), random decorations for an end table, under the tree, the ornaments, lights. It was just A LOT. My sister stopped helping some time after she turned 16. I ended up doing most of the work up until my parents sold that house.
Fast forward nearly 20 years later, a couple moves for me, an ex who never had much and me developing a taste for simpler decor, our decorations consist of a tree with ornaments, lights only for the porch railings with a few snowflake accents, and those shelf hooks that you set on the mantle for your stockings. I somehow ended up with my Grandma's ceramic tree. I have more than enough ornaments so I think a good chunk of them will end up in a garage sale in the near future. I recently made a wreath for my door and that's the extent of my decorating. It takes less than an afternoon to decorate. We have a box for the lights, an ornament storage box, a tote that holds the stockings, tree skirt, and a few other things, and then the box for the tree. It's a good thing DH also likes the simpler stuff. Less work for him he says.

Yes, I've been downsizing over the past few years. We gave our large Christmas tree to our DD last year and bought a 4.5' tree. I also downsized our 2-box ornament collection down to one. While I enjoy the decorations, it'd become too much over the years, especially since we no longer do any family celebrations at the house - so the smaller, the better for me. It was different, though, when I was younger. Back then, I loved going all out for Christmas.

I minimized my holiday decorations (all holidays not just Christmas) over the past year, and I'm SO GLAD I did. The house is still appropriately seasonally festive, but there is far less *stuff* to store, care for, put up, take down, etc. Reduced stress and time spent decorating and undecorating has improved our enjoyment of the holidays. No regrets here.

Glad to see I'm not alone. I think for so many years it was "More is More" maybe that is changing?
I've never hard of Shiny Bright before, had to look those up, I don't remember my parents ever having ones like that. I do have quite a few ornaments from my childhood, and I would never get rid of those.

Last year, for the first time ever, no one was going to visit us at Christmas. We bring in a large hibiscus plant each winter and normally I trim the branches back to about 2 ft. Last year it was still covered with buds/blooms, so I hung some lights and ornaments on it and used it for out tree. I really, really miss the nativity sets being out (I have a collection)--but didn't want to go to the trouble just for us.
The hibiscus will be our tree again this year.
I could not/would not do this if I had children still at home...or coming for the holiday.

I think I donated a couple of boxes of things we didn't use last year. I also made sure exH got all of his ornaments and anything I didn't really like. I could tell before the tree went up that it was not going to be kitten friendly. I tried just putting up my non-breakable ornaments, but the youngest keeps climbing into the tree to get at them and I'm afraid he's going to bend the limbs out of shape. I'm considering taking it back down now. I know I they will destroy any wrapped presents, so I didn't even attempt to put those out. After this year, I only have one more Christmas with cats. Then The Boy moves and they move with him. I did buy a tall skinny tree on sale from Michael's and put it in my bedroom for all of my breakables. I have all of the presents under that tree. That, plus the stockings on the fireplace may have to be all I do for the next two Christmases. It kinda sucks to be paying mortgage on a whole house but feel like only one room belongs to me. Can you tell I'm weary of my roommates? They're cute, but destructive as hell and I want my house back. We have two kittens this year, and I have decided not to put the tree up this year. This was decided after they pulled the branches out of the Advent wreath one at a time. They would knock a holly twig onto the floor, pull off the berries, and bat them around the room. Luckily, I have a nice pottery-type wreath form, so I pulled out the greenery - it was too much of a temptation. In lieu of a tree, we hung lights around the recessed ceiling in the living room. I hope this is a one year issue - this will be the most active they ever are, and they will be fixed early next year.

Downsized from 11 tubs of Christmas stuff when we moved. I don't know what we have now, because it is kind of spread out storage wise, but we do have two sets of decorations (lighthouses or gingerbread). This year would be gingerbread. It is so much work, and yes, I am in the club with everyone else who has to do it all myself. Not feeling it this year. I may just drag out the fake pre-lit spiral tree, plug it in and call it Christmas.
I normally decorate the day after Thanksgiving, however this year I had to work, so that really killed any holiday spirit I have. If I do not put the tree up this weekend (Sunday), then a tree will not happen. The following weekend we will be gone so if I am going to put forth the effort, I better do it this weekend.
The Hallmark singing snowman with the dog will come out, that is one of my son's favorites, but that is easy to get to (stored in an upper cabinet of the bathroom), and then place on a shelf so we can press the button.

No regrets here. This is kind of where we are. The days of the kids begging to decorate for Halloween in September are long gone and no one has asked me yet when the tree is going up for Christmas. All of what I think of the kid-based decor has been donated or thrown out. I still have Christmas things that I love putting out and might add a couple of angels or santas to my collection, but I am extremely picky about what gets added. My favorite decor is still the fresh pine wreaths on the door and a couple of huge poinsettias that I'll pick up at Costco today.

It takes me less than 2 hours to decorate. That's enough time spent on it for me. We have a nice artificial tree, a nice mantle, and our living room is decorated. Add a few things here and there around the house, candles in the windows, and that's it! I like it.

DH never helps me and we travel at Christmas so I have really scaled back. I have a pre lit tree in the living room and 3 little woodland trees in our breakfast nook, I gather greens from our yard and do the mantle. I have never done exterior lights.
I put my favorite ornaments on the big tree and usually do red beady garland and plain red ball ornaments. I got tired after ornaments and said out loud '..I don't need no stinking balls ' and quit. LOL
