Reading the "guys piercing ears" thread made me wonder if tongue piercing is now so yesterday?? I don't see it that much any more. Do you have your tongue pierced or know someone that has?

I'm older than the typical piercing demographic, so no, I don't have a tongue piercing nor do I know anyone personally who does. But I still see it a lot around here. And lots of eyebrow piercings and upper lip piercings. And nipple piercings. And... piercings anywhere they can (many of which I don't even understand how they work LOL).

My DD (age 30) had her tongue pierced in high school. In college, she had to have oral surgery to repair damage done by the tongue piercing. We are a walking, talking anti-tongue piercing ad.

I know someone who got it done at age 30, which was 5 years ago and she still talks with a lisp due to the piercing (she didn't have a lisp before). I thought she would have been used to it by now or changed to a smaller stud, etc.

My sister did. Then she grew up, realized it was stupid, and took it out.

I feel like in my area the nose piercing is way more popular than the tongue piercing. I still see tongue piercings, but not nearly as much as ones on the nose.

I pierced my tongue in college and when I went home for the weekend my dad paid me a $100 to take it out! Lol he still likes to tell that story 14 years later.

I've told my daughters that while they may be able to do what they want with their bodies once they're 18 (which they both are over), as long as they are on our insurance they aren't allowed to get any mouth piercings due to the potential for dental damage. If they did, they would find certain monetary privileges such as cell phone payments and car insurance payments drying up. I know many of you think they should be paying for these already, however DH and I believe that as long as they keep their grades above 3.0 we will pay these while they are in college. So anyway, no tongue or other mouth piercings here. Oldest DD has a rook and a tragus with very tiny studs, they're cute

I had mine pierced at 20, and it's still in 14 years later. honestly I forget it's even there. I was reading a book to a child at school and they noticed (that's rare, cuzyou really can't see it 99% of the time talking, laughing, etc) and asked what I had in my mouth. I'm like what, what DO I have in my mouth? OH, you mean... I wear plastic balls which have never caused any damage to my teeth. and I know very few people who have theirs done, young or old, so it might be passing out of fashion? doesn't matter to me, I do what I want with my appearance as long as my family, job and such aren't negatively impacted. DH just had his repierced last fall after taking it out for a job 10 years ago. TMI: I've never been told by a guy that they can feel a difference when the girl has theirs done and is wearing a standard ball. but there is a noticeable difference for me when husband had/has his pierced.

I had mine pierced 11 years ago and actually still have the original length piercing bar which I I never bothered to change out. I don't even notice anymore (nor has it done any damage) but occasionally someone will notice it and make a big deal about it. I was 27 when I had it pierced.

Wow really! I'm 39 and was in my early 20's when piercing your tongue was all the rage. Everyone I knew, myself included, had our tongues pierced. I've never know anyone to have needed surgery. A few friends chipped a tooth or ruined enamel but that's about it. What happened to her?!?! Yikes! Now I know no one personally with a pieced tongue. Even the belly button rings came out years ago. My best friends husband is in a punk band and so I'm still around the type of crowd who you think would, but I haven't noticed that many people do.

Had to Google, so now I have to ask - did it hurt? 'Cause it sure looks like it would! I have a 2nd hole in one lobe and it killed. Did they?

I had mine pierced in college and had it for a few years. After I started my professional job I didn't want to keep taking it out so I just kept it out for good. Mine really wasn't that noticeable. I don't know if it's less common these days or if it's just the fact you don't necessarily notice it like you would facial piercings.

She had to have her gums extended where they'd receded, I guess from the back of the stud banging into her lower front teeth? The periodontist was pretty definite about it being piercing related. travelsoul ... I think a chipped tooth or damaged enamel is pretty serious, too! Wow really! Another one who had damaged teeth from it. I had mine done when I was 29. Two teeth ended up with root canals, and both broke and are now gone. So is the piercing. One of my first profile pics at the old board was me in a birthday crown, sticking my pierced tongue out.

I had it done about 11 years ago, didn´t hurt that much but the first food I ate was chocolate ice cream and to this day I still can´t eat chocolate ice cream makes me so sick grrr. I took it off for some work and the hole closed it´s ok, I don´t think I would get it again but I did like it.

Since I'm obviously a dumbass with questionable life skills, I will say that I have one. I wear it on nights and weekends, but not when I'm working. I got it at 25 and I'm now 44.
I have no dental or lisping issues. I had mine done by a very well regarded piercer before piercing was all the rage and piercing joints were popping up all over.

DD did it at 18. I was REALLY mad at her. She had knee surgery shortly after and had to remove it. I held the stud for her and promised to give it back, surgery wasn't the time for that fight. When I gave it back to her in recovery, she expressed surprise that I hadn't thrown it out. After she put it back in, I told her I HAD dropped it in the toilet. (I didn't). I thought the nurse was going to die laughing at the look on DD's face.
She still has it, I still hate it.

My DD has had hers for a couple years now. She'll be 20 next month. She hasn't had any issues with it. Several of her friends also have tongue piercings. It grosses me out when she clicks it on purpose--she knows I'm not a fan. She's had many other piercings, some that wouldn't heal and fell out, and some she still has. The tongue one is the only one I really don't like.

My sister had her tongue pierced about 14 yrs. ago, and had to have it removed a few weeks later at the doctors office. It became infected and her tongue became discolored and hugely swollen. After a few rounds of antibiotics it finally healed.

I've seen it often in the twenty year old crowd.
I never had mine pierced (though I'm pretty vanilla with only one hole in each earlobe pierced)
Honestly, the clicking sound skeeves me out pretty bad, and I also would worry about damage to the teeth.
