We got back last night from 16 nights in beautiful Khao Lak in Thailand. We've been to other areas in Thailand but not this area and we totally loved it. Beautiful beaches, amazing food, not too busy but plenty of places to eat, some bars and the usual market type shopping. my husband organised my 50th birthday dinner at a lovely restaurant - my criteria was that I wanted nothing fancy but great seafood, have my feet in the sand and I wanted everyone to dress "loud". Here is the setting we arrived to, then me having my first cocktail My daughter and I did a snorkelling tour to Koh Tachai. I normally would never have a pic taken in my cossie but I tight "what the heck" LOL. It was a stunning place. We had such a lovely time, so relaxing and a great way to end a busy year.

A few more pics: Our resort had a lighthouse in front, it was one of the only structures in Khao Lak that survived the Tsunami in 2004. We loved taking a drink down to the beachfront at Sunset and just watching it go down. It was so peaceful

More Koh Tachai, the water was so clear and blue. There are no residents on this island, only day trippers and the national park staff All these are straight out of camera, no filters etc. apologies for posting the pic twice, I can't work out how to delete it.

Our favourite meals were from very basic places, I'm sure many of the peas would be horrified LOl however the places with one person cooking in very basic surroundings were the absolute best. No-one was sick etc. this lady sits at the front of a bamboo hut cooking in a couple of woks, she cooked a feast for the 9 of us very quickly and it cost about $5 per head!

Looks absolutely beautiful! My stepson runs a restaurant in Bangkok so we keep saying we will go visit him then head down to one of these stunning resorts- I'll keep this one in mind!
Recently a friend and I were discussing tropical holidays (I've been to Fiji 3 times and Hawaii once) and she said that she could never wear bathers because she was self conscious about her figure. Mind you, she is a size 10-12 women in her mid forties who would look totally fine and it surprised me to think that someone would forgo an amazing holiday because of it. I don't love photos of me in my bathers but still take them - I want to remember the fun I had and the beautiful place I had it in. Yes I'm 52 and chubby but I'M HAVING A GREAT TIME IN PARADISE!! (all that to say you look great in your bathers - very relaxed and happy. )

Oh Allie, the photos are amazing!!! And happy birthday to you, what a way to spend it! I'm so jealous, I love the photo of you with your cocktail on the swing. I think DSO and I are the only people NOT to have gone to Thailand or Vietnam or Bali in the last 5 years!
I must have missed your posts about going to Thailand, I realised on the weekend that I hadn't seen you post for a while so went back to your old posts and found out where you were that way haha!
BTW, how did your DD go with VCE, I assume she got her results yesterday?

She should have enough to get into health sciences at Flinders Uni in Adelaide which was her aim. She then wants to transfer to speech pathology 2nd year. We we landed in Melbourne at 11am and she didn't want to turn her phone in! It was a weird feeling sitting at the airport finding out. How did your dd go?

Corinne This makes me so sad about your friend. What an awful waste of a life Good for you for enjoying life and taking those pics! I took one of my good friend who is a large lady in the pool. She has her arms leaning on the edge and I took it from a reasonable distance to get in the pool and beach. It is fabulous and she nearly cried seeing it. It is now her FB profile pic I was probably similar a few years ago (photo wise) but lost a few friends to illness and I had a wake up call. Some of their kids had hardly any photos of Mum because she didn't like having them taken because she thought she was fat etc. those kids would do anything to have more photos of their lovely Mum. Interestingly, there were heaps of European's there who never wear one piece suits, all bikinis and they are in all shapes and sizes and seem really comfortable in themselves. All power to them I reckon.

Haha, we have friends who flew out to New York at 7:20am Monday so they would have got the results just before take off! My DD went better than she thought she would, she is very happy. She fell a bit short (like by 1.45 points!) of getting a "Clearly In" mark for Physio at La Trobe but she's still confident that she'll get in as her school has some kind of arrangement with La Trobe. Finally all those years of school fees may have paid off if it puts her mark up a bit! I was probably similar a few years ago (photo wise) but lost a few friends to illness and I had a wake up call. All power to them I reckon. Aw, this makes me sad / guilty because I'm hardly in any photos these days, and certainly NOT in my bathers. I love how confident Europeans seem to be with their bodies, they don't give a shit that they're not all size 8. I wish I could be like that! (Actually, I wish I was still a size 8! )

Looks gorgeous! Your DH did a good job organising your birthday week.
My DS is off to the region late Jan/early Feb. He was hoping he would be able to get cheap meals, and it looks like he's in luck there. I hope he has as good a time as you did.

I'd find the area fascinating to know how the recovery from the tsunami has been.

He was hoping he would be able to get cheap meals, and it looks like he's in luck there. I hope he has as good a time as you did. Food can range from super cheap to as expensive as you will pay. my best tip is to not be afraid of food at markets and street food as long as the vendor is cooking everything fresh as you wait. I had some fish cakes at a market which are the best I've ever eaten and they were the equivalent to 80cents for 8. Lots of satay and other chicken on sticks, corn on the cob, noodles etc. restaurants always have menus out the front to check so he can see what the prices are like. We mostly ate at places with plastic or bamboo tables and chairs which were not fancy at all but the food was amazing. Some places are similar to home if you are eating at English type pubs etc and hotels usually ink die a service charge which can be up to 18% so he should be wary of this. food courts at shopping centres surprisingly also have great food. The cook everything to order and my daughter had the best green chicken curry of the trip at one of these - $5 including rice for a huge serve. He will love it. Thailand is a place that few people go to only once, it draws you back I didn't like Phuket much, particularly Patong Beach as it was super busy and just chaotic and expensive but we only spent 2 days there. Young ones love it though as it has a lot of the party scene.

Looks amazing. I'd find the area fascinating to know how the recovery from the tsunami has been. We went to the memorial and the museum which was very emotional. It was so hard seeing the places we were staying and visited totally wiped out and thinking of the poor people that had no chance Thai's are very resilient and resourceful and they started rebuilding straight away. There are pretty much no signs at all of what happened.
