I'm watching the same story on CBC. Sounds like it was flying over the conflict zone in Mali. Sigh.

This is beyond freaky, in the context of the last couple of weeks. Anyone here not feeling like booking any more flights? P & PT for all affected.

Granted, it's just within Canada but I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to have issues getting that nervous flyer on the plane if this keeps up. I can't believe we're up to 6 planes (I think) in the past 10 days.

Oh no, and it has 110 passengers and 6 crew aboard.....the French Transport Minister says there could possibly be a lot of French passengers on it. And that follows the TransAsia plane that came down in Taiwan yesterday. Hopefully today's is the third tragic incident!!

I am a pretty nervous flyer, had a bad turbulence incident a couple of years back (which of course does NOT compare to the agony of the fliers and families at the moment) and would not have climbed on another 'plane had it not been essential for work. I still have sleepless nights leading up to a flight. I wish you an incident-free flight and the right words & circumstances to soothe your travel companion.

I just heard about this. They also said that there is a possibility that it was effected by weather-there is a hurricane forming, and the plane flew over one of the developing cells. But goodness, all these planes. It is horrific.

I think it's 6... but I am including all planes, both military and civilian. This one, I believe, is the second civilian plane. I'm not worried about flying. It's like getting into a car for me. I'm not overly worried about my travel companion, just starting to feel a bit of concern and stress that all these stories may have an effect. I have no doubt that our flights will be just fine.

It's rare that a commercial airliner is routed anywhere near a hurricane. Meteorological reports track hurricanes way in advance of them building to a stage where they would have any impact on a large aircraft, and if there is one in the neighborhood, planes are rerouted to avoid it. Flying over Mali, however, could be a real problem.

Air Canada is not flying into Tel Aviv, day by day decision. Apparently the no American based airlines are flying into that area as well.
Hopefully flying on Air Canada to Frankfurt will not be affected as my friend is going there is a few weeks.
Why or why do airlines have a flight plan in war areas?

Flying over Mali, however, could be a real problem. I know...which is why I was so surprised that they were even talking about it. They were flying over where a storm was forming. But I guess what they are saying that the pilots were aware of the storm and were trying to find around it-the last message was they were looking to divert from the flight plan due to the weather. But, I am so clueless. I know down here in hurricane central, the will cancel flights all the time for the weather- so I can't even imagine a circumstance where a plane would even fly close to a storm like that.

A French official said that he doubts the Malian rebels have anything capable of shooting down an aircraft that's flying at that altitude. Hopefully that's true. Also, I don't think there are hurricanes in Mali. Or Burkina Faso where the flight started. I think one of the articles said something about a huge sandstorm though. I don't know how high up they go but they can be totally blinding, like where you just have to stop what you're doing, wrap something around your face, and crouch down and wait.

It isn't a fully formed hurricane, but the storm that while crossing the oceans becomes the hurricanes. I don't know the correct meteorological term, but from what they said this morning the cells within the storm, can be very powerful.

You are right, of course. Absent the freaky stuff that has happened more recently, flying is statistically safer than driving. Safe travels.

5 Canadians were on the flight MD-83
ALGIERS, Algeria -- Burkina Faso's transport minister says five Canadians were among those onboard an Air Algerie flight that disappeared from radar today over northern Mali after heavy rains were reported.
The plane was carrying 116 people from Burkina Faso to Algeria's capital, according to the plane's owner and government officials in France and Burkina Faso.
Air navigation services lost track of the MD-83 about 50 minutes after takeoff from Ougadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, at 0155 GMT (9:55 p.m. EDT Wednesday), the official Algerian news agency APS said.
Burkina Faso's transport minister said 50 French nationals were among those onboard, along with 24 Burkina Faso nationals, six Lebanese, five Canadians, four Algerians, two Luxemburg nationals, one Swiss, one Nigerian, one Cameroonian and one Malian.

The pilot had asked to be rerouted due to a storm. Thirty minutes later contact was lost. I hope this plane is easier to find since it was over land and not the ocean like MH317.

No, I don't normally fly over conflict zones like the last 2 planes. There's a car accident every morning on the news I have much better chance dying here at home.

Just saw this on Cnn.com - Air Algerie said via Twitter that the plane has apparently crashed in the Tilemsi area, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) from the southeastern city of Gao.

Evidently bad weather caused the plane to deviate from its normal course. 51 French Nationals were believed to be on board. 2 French fighter jets are searching the area.

I don't generally fly too often - twice a year on the average - but this year has been an exception and I will be flying at least three more times before the end of the year. I am a nervous flyer, so all of these incidents are just compounding the fear I try really hard to keep in check. Thoughts and prayers for all the families involved in this latest tragedy.
