If so can you give me the pros and cons. I'm looking at the silver edition Hero3+.
We're taking a road trip with our car club for the 20th anniversary celebration at the corvette museum next month and I'd like to record the trip. I mainly want it to mount to the car dash to record the drive but also want something that's small and lightweight to record the events. With an estimated 4000 vetted being there I don't think I can really capture the overall experience with just still photos.
I have a Canon camcorder now but it's not compact and you need a degree from MIT to figure it out. I'm open to any and all suggestions for something compact with an easy learning curve.

I have one of the older versions and I've used one of the newer versions. They're definately gotten easier to use and the learning curve is better with the newer ones. They're awesome little cameras. We mount them on DH's motorcycle to record rides mostly. But we've also put it on the dog to see what he's up to while we are gone and he is alone in the house. They're easy to use. Just make sure you have a large card or a couple of larger cards or a laptop to download the data.

My DH has 2 of them actually. We just got back from a cruise where we went scuba diving and swimming with the sting rays and the pictures and video were amazing! My DS used his with a mount on his hand. My DH bought a smaller camera with a mount that he can just carry around. Actually, he has all sorts of different mounts for the cameras. He's super big into his cameras and both DH and DS love theirs. They use them all the time!

You actually can't see the video on the gopro I have you need the app on your smartphone or ipad to see what you are videotaping. It's a neat little camera but to take pictures you need the app on your phone and then snap the pictures on your phone. Unless I am doing it all wrong you can start and stop from the camera but cannot see what you are doing on the camera. You aren't sure what you have video taped until you watch it on something else.

How is this camera for regular photos? I would like another underwater camera that I can also use for everyday photos. Does it have a flash for indoor photos?

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if I can download to my Ipad? I don't have a laptop but will have my Ipad with me. You can connect the camera remotely to the GoPro app via WiFi. One of my favourite features is using my iPad as both the camera's LCD screen and a remote for starting and stopping the camera as well as changing the settings.

Keep in mind that it's a POV camera first and foremost - it doesn't zoom, although you can set the field to wide, medium or narrow, and the widest angle has quite a bit of fish-eyeing. The light sensor on the new versions is excellent and I've never needed an external light source except when I've been night diving. If you are thinking of buying one, check out MicBergsma's channel on Youtube. He has a lot of comparisons between different setting modes as well as the different camera versions.

I will be looking into this for xmas gift for ds

Just keep in mind there's no viewfinder so you can't use it like a regular camera that you frame your scene and shoot. You just kind of have to shoot blindly and hope you get something good, unless you use the app, but it's a lot of stuff to hold.
My DH has one. We've used it underwater and for travel pics, but we end up deleting most of the pics. It does a great job for what it is designed to do, but don't expect it to replace your regular camera.

I asked my DS what he wanted for a graduation present. His laptop is less than two years old and we just purchased a new printer, so he asked for a GoPro. He wanted the silver edition. It just arrived the other day and he is so excited to use it on our upcoming trip to the dunes to go four wheeling. He's been messing around with it around the house and now I want one. Can't wait to show him the video of the dogs and the YouTube channel. Have fun with your new toy!

Gopro video - Costa Rica 2014I received the Hero 3+ black edition for Christmas last year, spent a few weeks trying to figure it out, and shot this video on our March Break trip. I love the camera overall. You do shoot blindly, unless you buy the accessory LCD screen or use your iphone or ipad and wifi connection to get a live view of what you're filming. Typically the field of view is wide enough that you capture pretty much everything, but there are a few instances in my linked movie (for example, the wild monkeys) where I wish I'd been aiming a little higher or lower. The camera is not intuitive to use, but it's not hard to figure out and has a limited number of settings, so you can't go too far wrong. My style of shooting is to film short clips, 10-20 seconds at a time, and I had no problem with this. People who shoot longer sequences complain about battery life and cards filling up quickly. I can't comment on that except to say that the Wasabi brand spare batteries and chargers you can buy on eBay are just as good as the Gopro brand and considerably cheaper! The still photos are good quality in good light conditions. They are large file sizes and the wide angle captures a wide field of view so you can crop your photos down to improve the composition and they are still perfectly useable. I second Mic Bergsma's videos on YouTube. I learned everything I know from him and he's been a fantastic resource for me. You do learn as you go along. For example, I know now that in order to get a whole person in my shot, from top of head to toe, I should generally be pointing the camera at their waist. Like I said, the video I've linked is the first thing I shot with the camera, and I think it turned out pretty well for a first-timer.

Thanks for the input. I don't think the GoPro is what I should get at this time although I do think it sounds awesome and something I might want eventually. For now, I think I want something to use snorkeling as well as land shots and I would want a view finder. I would like video as well as still shots.

Thanks again for all the info. Loved the dog park but the Costa Rica wouldn't play on the Ipad, I'll try it on the computer.
DH had been researching all morning and found a comparison video on YouTube between the silver and black. Looks like I'm getting the black and I will be getting the LCD screen, I need to see what I'm shooting. Can't wait to get this little thing and play before our trip.
