This whole story is unbelievable. I've lived here all my life, and the family has been at each other's throats ever since I can remember. In my town, we have 3 Market Baskets, they are the ONLY grocery store. All have been empty this week, both of perishables and customers. Every household in town has to leave town to get groceries, and seem to be willing to do so in order to help the cause. If Artie T. can pull off the purchase of the whole company, there will be much rejoicing!

I'm originally from Vermont--which has no Market Baskets--but have lived in New Hampshire for a few years now. It's a huge mess! I have four coworkers who used to work at Market Basket. One is married to a current MB employee. I've never seen anything quite like this. Market Basket article

It's on the front page of Yahoo!! It's crazy. I last shopped last Friday and had no issues, but know of folks who tried to go over the weekend and it was a disaster. There are two in my city, and two in a neighboring city, but we also have Stop and Shop, Shaws, Aldis, so we do have options but MB is so much cheaper.
I hope they get their act together quickly. If not and they close, I hope the stick a Wegmans into one of the empty stores super fast!!

Lisa, that's got to be really rough on your community. I feel for all of the families that work for the company. And, worry about the seniors and others who use public transportation or must travel on foot or bicycle for their groceries. Let's hope that they get to a speedy resolution.

Kellee - my son has been dying to work there for years! lol I know so many families that are MB families, parents, children, grandparents all worked there. They certainly do something right with the training of their employees because I've never encountered a cashier, bagger, shelf stocker, carriage shagger who wasn't the utmost professional, polite and courteous. Meanwhile, you go to S&S or Shaws and have a cashier who won't even speak to you throughout your transaction and you have to bag your own groceries while they stand there and look annoyed.
I also feel for the local farmers who have been impacted as we have such a short growing season here in New England. And I'm out of MB apple pie yogurt so they need to get this wrapped up quick!!

I have a friend who has quite a few family members who work for MB. I've seen a lot of their posts about it on facebook, and I feel bad for everyone involved. Some of her family members have worked there for many years.
I do wonder about something though...I've seen pictures on fb of completely bare shelves. Why is that? Why are they not delivering food to the stores? How in the world will the stores even survive, and what is the point of ousting a popular CEO and installing another and then just letting the stores sit empty?

They don't have workers to accept the deliveries, and many workers have walked out of the central offices. And if the deliveries were made, they don't have enough workers to restock. What a mess. Unfortunately for MB, we have a variety of stores close by. Including smaller locally owned family stores (Butchery, McKinnons, Butcher Boy) that have similar pricing to MB.

Yes, the warehouse workers are not accepting or sending deliveries and the stores weren't accepting deliveries either, so the stores are out of perishible items. Someone also told me that the Director of Operations was one of the 7 high level employees that was fired over the weekend.

I shop at MB. I am on such a tight budget with DH out of work. They have the cheapest prices around. Yeah, I have other options: Roche Bros, Stop & Shop, Shaws, Hannafords, and Big Y but nothing as cheap as MB. I will probably shop at Hannafords this week.
I hope this is resolved quickly for all involved.

For those of us who've never heard of Market Basket, what happened? We've certainly had grocery stores close or be bought out, but that doesn't seem to be what y'all are describing.

For those of us who've never heard of Market Basket, what happened? We've certainly had grocery stores close or be bought out, but that doesn't seem to be what y'all are describing. It is a family run chain of 70+ grocery stores. The grandfather started it, his two sons took it over, they hate each other. Both sons had sons named Arthur, Arthur T and Arthur S. They hate each other. Arthur S and his backers recently got rid of Arthur T as CEO. All the employees are trying to support Arthur T by walking off the job. Employees are fearful that Arthur S is going to change the business model, sell off parts of the business, reduce their profit sharing, etc. They don't have a union, so if Arthur T doesn't get back in after a board meeting tomorrow, they'll likely all be fired.

What a mess!
For someone in another part of the US that isn't familiar with this chain - or the family drama either. Why so many Arthur's? It must be a family name? Is that the grandfather's name?

Yes, Arthur was the grandfather's name (the founder of the grocery chain). Here' s a breakdown: www.bostonglobe.com/2014/07/22/market-basket-history/iVWct72xchoX2bSvb5f1zH/story.htmlThe Board of Directors moved their meeting up to tomorrow morning, from the original time of 4 pm tomorrow. No idea what will happen. It's amazing how many customers are supporting the employees. A major rally is also scheduled tomorrow at one of their stores close to their headquarters, just a stone's throw from me. I expect a couple thousand to show up at least. Stay tuned! Lisa B.

I went shopping last Friday at MB and saw nothing out of the ordinary. But I haven't stepped foot in one since then. I don't need much in the way of groceries this week so I'll probably just shop here in town at Shaw's. The closest MB to me is 30+ mins away.
Kellee - what's your dh think of the whole thing?
