No advice about the passport but wanted to say that Mexico City was one of my most favorite places I've ever visited. If at all possible, you must see the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, which is not a ballet but rather a telling of Mexican history through dance. So, so entertaining.

I renewed all of ours last summer, didn't need a rush or anything and got them back in 10 days. However, since you need them on a fairly short notice, I would expedite.

Warning: If your husband has to renew his, send the passports in separate envelopes. I put them in the same envelope with one check--and the check ws clearly marked for 2 passports/names etc. They took the money, expedited his and sent me a letter saying "You have to send money." --even though the amount on my check did not match the fees (except for 2 renewals). When I telephoned to explain/complain, I had to pay in advance a fee to talk to someone!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Then, I had to send copy of front/back of check to prove what I said was true. Needless to say, it took the entire 6 weeks and more. The man at the post office told us I had to write a separate check for each passport. I was not thrilled, but since mine was processed about 3 weeks after everyone else's, I am glad we did it that way.

My passport expires in July of this year. We have a trip planned for June, so I figured I'd renew next month or the month after. Well, SO has surprised me with a trip to Mexico City for Valentine's Day. We are right at four weeks out. I'm right on the cusp of having to expedite, but I really don't want to pay the extra $60 if I don't have to. Does anyone know what the average wait is right now? If it doesn't expire until July and you are going in February, isn't the one you have still good to go to Mexico with? Not usually. If your passport is within six months of expiring, the authorities often won't let you travel.

If you live near one of the passport agency offices, not just a post office, you could just go there and do it in one day. My sister booked a trip to Mexico not realizing she needed a passport. She went to the San Francisco office and got hers (not a renewal) the same day. They did have to stand in line, then pick it up later in the day. But it was worth it because their flight was the next morning! You can no longer just go into the passport office to get a renewal. From the website of the Passport Agency where she lives: If you are traveling internationally in less than 2 weeks or need to obtain a foreign visa within 4 weeks, you are eligible to schedule an appointment at this passport agency with proof of international travel.
smartypants71 - If you want to wait until 2 weeks before, you could do it in person. I'd rather not wait and would use one of the local expeditors to rush it through. ETA: I just checked the State Dept. Passport website as I am in the process of renewing my passport. Here are the current processing times they are giving:
Routine: 4-6 Weeks Expedited: 3 Weeks Expedited at Agency: 8 Days (based on need, restrictions (above) apply)
If you choose to go this route (going to the agency), you still have to pay the expedited fee.

2006 was the first year you needed a passport to travel to Mexico from the USA. That was 10 years ago and all those passports are up,for renewal this year. I'm going back to Israel in the fall and mine expires in August. I'm planning on renewing it in March so as to not have to worry over processing time. You should definitely expedite. I just read an article about this very thing! They are expecting a deluge of renewals and say to do it early if you plan to travel.

That is good to know, as I'm mailing mine off today! I don't leave on vacation until May 1st, so I should have it in plenty of time. IF it is 6 weeks at the longest, that puts me mid-March.

Well, they cashed my check yesterday, so 8 days after I mailed it, so I at least know they received it.
