For me, I started at about age 13...maybe very late 12. My daughter got her first period about 4ish months before she turned 13. Not sure if it's hereditary, but we both had ours by 13. No idea about my mom--not something we talked about back then!

I was 12y5m, my older DD was 11y3m (poor thing, she started the first day of middle school). She was a tiny little thing too, no where near 100 lbs. I, on the other hand, was 100lbs 5ft tall in 5th grade.
My younger DD is currently 9y3m...I suspect based on puberty signs that she'll be a late 10/early 11 for menarche. Which would still be in elementary school so I hope I'm wrong. She won't start 6th grade (middle school) until just before she turns 12 (11y10.5m)

I was 13, almost 14. DD started right around her 12th birthday. I was taller/heavier than her at that age.

I got it when I was 14. My daughter is 12 and 3 months. In the last week she has had terrible cramps very much like cramps with her period but nothing else. She doesn't have breast buds at all and only the most slight start of public hair. Her ballet teacher wanted her to go on pointe this year but was concerned because she is little so they as us get her feet x-rayed to look at the growth plates. They had not begun to move/shift/close or whatever they are supposed to do.
I wonder is the fact that those growth plates are not moving yet and indicator that she is a ways from menstrating? Can you make that inference? Does any one know? Also, has anyone had a child get cramps like that before they start their period?

Dd was just barely 14 (but really didn't start to be regular until recently at 14.5). I was 10 and my mom was 16 so don't think there's correlation between mothers and daughters. I was also far from being 100 lbs. at 10 (had only barely hit that by high school graduation). Dd had a fair amount of hair since about 12 fwiw, but she didn't really get much in the way of breasts until recently (we're not a well endowed family though).

Mine is 11.5. She hasn't started yet. When we went for her check-up in Aug, the ped asked if I had noticed any budding of her breast. I said yes, about 6 months prior. She said it is typically 2 years from then. So at that point, about 1.5 years. I'm guessing we have about another year. For the record, I was 11.5 when I started.

Average age remains 12 yrs 4 months. My dd was, in fact, 1 day short of 12 year and 4 months. I was 12 yrs and 2 months when I got mine. It was November of 7th grade. I have no idea why I remember that. Neither dd nor I weighed the magic 100 lbs at 12. I think that number has more to do with a typical weight/height/size and body fat amount by age 12. It's another generality. On average, menarche (aka the first period) begins 2 years after definite breast buds appear. I was nine when I started and my periods were awful from the very beginning. I don't think I had any signs of breasts until I was a teenager and then not much to brag about until after I had kids in my 30s. I guess I'm a freak!

I was 12, DD 10.5
There was 6 months between DD's 1st & 2nd periods and then a couple months between 2nd & 3rd so I had to make sure she had supplies with her for sleepovers and if she went away for the weekend and DH started carry a little supply pouch in his truck. Number 2 showed up while she was with her BFF's family at their lake house and DD was very thankful I'd given the mom a heads up that it might happen.

Mine were both around 11. I was 13.5. My niece is almost 11 and I asked my sister if she had gotten her period yet and she said NO! I said well it could be coming anytime.

There is obviously a wide range of outliers. Or, if you prefer, you can be above average!

Thanks for responding! This is all good information. She doesn't have breast buds so we may be a long way away. However my 10 year old daughter definitely does. If my 10 yr old starts before my 13 yr old there may be problems lol. They're so competitive - hopefully they won't be about this. Has anyone run into that situation?

I was 12 almost 13 yrs when I started. Dd just turned 13 and hasn't stared.
I am not sure if her auto immune conditions have anything to do with that or not. She has Dysautonomia and POTS.
Eta, she developed breasts this past summer. When I started I had no breasts. I developed after, during 8th grade.

Average age remains 12 yrs 4 months. Hi Melissa, my dd has Dysautonomia and POTS. Still learning a lot. But can that cause delayed start of her period? Its an antonomic nervous system disease.

This happened with my sister and I. I was 10 and she was 13 and still hadn't started. My Mother never expected me to be first and never explained anything to me. Talk about unprepared and so not ready for it. I swore my girls wouldn't have that unhappy surprise and really started to prepare older DD when she was about 9 1/2. Younger DD is 8 and we talk pretty openly about stuff, but I know we aren't too far from prepping her. Even if she's lucky to start much later, I want her to know what to expect.

I was 11 years old. DD1 started at 12, she is 14 now, DD2 started at 11, she is 12 now ... And DD3 is only 10 so I think we have another year maybe. Suffice to say we go through a ton of "supplies" around here. No boys except for my DH, hence the reason why all three of our dogs are male.

Hi Melissa, my dd has Dysautonomia and POTS. Still learning a lot. But can that cause delayed start of her period? Its an antonomic nervous system disease. That's a really good question and I don't know the answer. I do know that puberty can be a trigger for the syndrome itself, but I don't know if causes delayed menarche. I suppose it might make a difference as to what the underlying cause is, but, as you likely already know, often no known cause is found. I can't think of any reason why it would delay the start of menarche itself. A girl with no breast buds by the age of 14 should have at least a basic evaluation as should a girl who does not get a first period by 3 years after the breast buds develop. If she's being seen by a pediatrician, I'm sure they will be on top of this.
