The Washington Post had this article today about the speed of speaking in different states. I wonder if some pronunciations are caused by fast or slow talking. It also made me think of the difference between dialect and drawl. Are you a fast talker, or a slow talker? I grew up in Alabama. That would make me a very slow talker. Oops, forgot the link: wapo.st/1R5tkB5

I could be the Micro Machine spokesperson. I talk crazy fast- I always have. My friends have always teased me about it. I'm from Texas, and once while in college, my dad met one of my friend's parents- they are from MN. After they left, my dad asked me, "Does he understand anything you say?" lol. Friend's dad speaks v-e-r-y slowly. Incidentally, my Texas twang usually only comes out when I'm super tired or angry. Either way, DH has learned not to irritate me further when he hears my accent. It never turns out well for him. ?

I moved a lot. But I tend to talk fast. I don't talk too MN. You will not hear, uffda out of me!! But I may say ya, but I think everyone does. My family is from IL, so that is my speak!! My voice has been used for company phone trees. Since I talk fast, yet clear it is perfect for...if you want the parts department press one.

I come from a family of fast talkers. As a kid I had to relearn certain words because I talked to fast my pronunciation was weird. Any thing with a double t was jammed together and sounded like a d. Mittens were middens, no real pause between syllables.
When I'm excited or around my sisters it really ramps up. Drives my husband crazy as he has trouble following and it's just too much for him. Luckily we don't live near my family. ;-)

I work with ESL students so I purposely try not to talk too fast! They will call me out if I'm talking to fast and they can't understand so it has made me more aware.

I am a slow talker and have a drawl.
I grew up in North Florida (lived there until I was 21) which is mostly aligned with south Georgia (it was about 20 minutes to the Georgia state lines) as far as regional cultural affiliations. My children grew up in Central Florida and there is a distinct difference between how I speak, both in accent and speed, and how they speak. This are still has vestiges of southerness, but has flattened it out somewhat because of the large numbers of transient visitors and those that decide to stay permanently.
I know when I interact with those that aren't used to either the speed or the accent (usually those from northern states) it is frustrating for them as I probably do speak slower than what is normal for them.

I learned a foreign language as an adult (Arabic). It made me very conscious of speed and pronunciation.

I've lived in NYC pretty much my entire life and I talk very fast. So many times my mother would stop me and say "breathe". The people I am closest with will say I talk a lot. My 5 year old niece took great pleasure in finding out that I am a chatterbox, just like she is. Any one else would say I lean towards the quiet side.

Medium with pauses now. I can never live in northeast again. I'd make them crazy, and I don't want all the snow!

I think I've slowed down over the years, but I definitely talk fast.
It used to hurt my feelings when I was younger and adults would look over my head after I spoke and say to my mom "What did she say?". Seriously? I'm not an idiot. You can ask me to slow down and I will.

If I'm nervous I talk fast, otherwise I think I'm pretty average.

I am a reflective person so my speech pattern is that I take long moments to absorb and synthesize what someone has said, followed by a fairly rapid discharge of my thoughts and reactions to what I heard. It drives DH crazy because he is a fast-talker. So he often interrupts me mid-thought, which infuriates me. Even though I grew up in the South, my pace of speech is much faster than a Southerner's, although I still use Southern words and expressions.

I'm a fast-talking Oregonian and am relieved to see I come by it naturally LOL I do a lot of talking/presenting on conference calls for work, so have to consciously slow myself way down. After all these years, you'd think it would take effort any more, but it still does, every time. When my best friend and I talk, it's insanity. Like, we listen to Lorelei and Rory on the Gilmore Girls and think that sounds totally normal and the right speed to speak

I don't think I talk fast, but I know I don't talk slow, either. Except when I slow down purposely for any reason.

I'm from Massachusetts and am presently in Florida visiting. I talk much faster than these folks ( anxiousmom)!! Interestingly my children were raised in northern Massachusetts (I was raised just north of Boston) and the kids don't have my accent or my ex's. I have often wondered if it's because their school had a huge majority of teachers who were raised non-English speaking.

I speak at a fairly fast pace but I am not a fast talker. I guess because I am from one of the talkative states I do get frustrated with slow talkers.

It depends on who I'm talking to and what I'm talking about. If I'm talking to my kid, I talk fairly fast because she can keep up with it. If I'm talking to DH, I talk slowly, LOUDLY and infrequently, and leave out any embellishing LOL. With other people it really depends on the subject matter. I talk faster if I'm excited, angry, etc.
And you will never, *ever* hear me utter the phrase "Yah, sure, you betcha!"

A slow crawl or drawl, I live in the south but not the Deep South where talking is extremely slow. I don't listen fast either.

I'm a fast-talking Oregonian and am relieved to see I come by it naturally LOL I'm a slower talking NE Florida girl married (28 years) to a fast talking Oregonian. It was crazy at first and even after living in SE Virginia for over twenty years, he still talks fast and I still talk slow. I even had a boss once who talked so fast, I had to ask her to slow down when she talked to me so I could understand her. lol I adjusted quickly, but she was fast! ETA: I am a pretty fast talker when ticked off, though!

I think average. Although in college I was on the debate team and we would "spread", which is speaking as quickly as possible.

I am a very fast talker. Sometimes I have to remember to slow down. I worked the drive thru at Wendy's and/or was management for 8 years, so I got to talk fast.

I don't tend to think of myself as a fast talker. I know I can talk too fast when nervous, so I try to slow down then.
Interestingly, I have a bad habit of "interrupting" when others are talking - but not everyone. I think the ones I jump in on are the people who speak slowly, pause between thoughts and then continue - but I've already jumped in during that brief pause. Those people kind of get irritated and I really try to do better, but sometimes I just want to move the conversation along and they take forever to say what they want.

when I was a little kid we moved from NYC to northern AL. I remember my father walking in the door saying, "I don't know how these people get anything done, it take them half the day to say good morning." We didn't last very long in AL

I am definitely a fast talker. Very fast. It is remarked upon on a daily basis at work. I lead an interdisciplinary meeting each morning at work, and there used to be requests to slow down......to which I responded with 'listen faster'. =) I am now renowned in my position for getting us through that meeting in 10-15 minutes. They actually phased that meeting out in the rest of the hospital, but still have me lead it on one hospital unit simply because I do it quickly and efficiently and we are in and out with lots of good information presented in a short time period.
I can slow down if I consciously think about it......for a few sentences. Then I am back to my regular speed. You speak at a certain rate. Can slow talkers talk fast for a sustained amount of time? No. For a little bit, OK.....but you speak at the speed you speak. Very difficult to modulate that. It frustrates me to no end when someone keeps asking me to slow down. I try my best but it is very hard to speak at an unnatural speed.

S-L-O-W... I grew up in Virginia and have a very southern drawl. My children have grown up in central Florida where no one is from the South and mock my drawl! They actually say "Ya'll" is NOT a word! Can you imagine? Such disrespectful children!

I speak fast. I do and there is only one person I know who has a problem with it. She is a Japanese woman I don't want to be friends with. She always pointed out that I spoke too fast. Ok, you win! I speak too fast.
