Why did they call you 12 times? I had a co-worker not show once, we called him once, and they waited until the next day. Unless you have reason to be concerned about someone's welfare, you should assume something legitimate happened to them (sick, asleep, emergency) and they will get back to you when they can. It is crisis response. They needed me - specifically me because it was only my shift- to respond. When that didn't happen they reached back to the guy before me.

Well, I can tell you why an employer would call many times. Welfare check. Did it two weeks ago. I had an employee who never missed a day of work. Totally reliable. She didn't show up. I called her cell. Landline. Etc. I finally called her sister who was listed as emergency contact. She ended up going over there and finding her on the floor. She'd obviously slipped on a throw rug, fallen, and hit her head and was unconscious. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital and had a subdural hematoma. I'm thinking she's glad I kept checking on her.

Your angry co-worker sounds like he was hormonal and just extra moody! But you have done something extra nice by taking both his next shifts. Some people are just extra moody regardless of the situation. But if he was threatening, that may be something the boss should be aware of. Or maybe he had plans for Saturday and now has to sleep. I'd be irritated and moody if someone didnt show up and I had to go to work on no sleep.
