I just joined at the end of December after years at a "real" gym and honestly I'm liking this place better. Maybe it's because it's a change of scenery. I DESPISE cardio and there are a gazillion bikes, treadmills, and ellipticals. But, mine has 4 Smith racks and 4 cable machines , along with free weights and bars. And, of course, the other machines. I see every size, shape, and age.
I guess it depends on what you're looking for. There are no regular classes, but there are trainers to help you anytime and I've seen them taking people through workouts. They will design a program for you- again, not sure how good it would be.
They do have a few rooms if you don't want to workout in a big area. They have a 30-minute room which has machines that hit the major body parts, a hip and abs room, and a 12-minute abs room.
I think it can be what you make it.

First off, thanks to the person who said "if you're chunky and self-conscious". That just makes me want to head to YOUR gym where you're judging people for what you think are chunky and self-conscious. For the record, I am far from chunky. I WAS self-conscious when I first started going, but now I just don't care. I'm there to work out, I couldn't care less what other people think. I just came from my PF. All shapes and sizes and ages from out of shape to GREAT shape. The only sign that I see at mine is the Lunk Alarm sign, not a single other sign that isn't encouraging. I find that one funny rather than mean. The annual fee is $29 or $39 depending on your contract, not $100, at least in my area. Seriously, the price per month is either $10 or $20. Of COURSE you're not going to get child care or trainers or classes. All of those things require additional workers and probably additional insurance (for the child care at least). If you want those you will have to pay a higher cost. And don't think your gym isn't over selling and betting on people not using their memberships. I need to be able to walk up the stairs without getting out of breath. It's not because I'm chunky, it's because my cardiovascular system is out of shape. I could never afford a gym until the PF opened in a convenient area to me. And I'm loving it. I was talking about myself, but come on over. I like PF because no one cares what my fat self is doing but me. You'll have to bring your fit trim self over to say hi, because I'll be gasping on the treadmill trying not to have a heart arrack. I didn't get that you were referring to yourself. I misinterpreted your post.

Super excited to try it out! Thanks for your replies. Probably just do the $10 a month option for now to see if I really like it. They ad in the paper said it will be one of the largest in the area.

I love mine. When I graduated from physical therapy, my PT guy suggested it so I could continue doing the exercises he taught me.
It's so comfortable and easy to walk in, do my thing and head out, and it's three minutes from my house.

I love Planet Fitness! I have the 20.00 per month plan and my son and I both go! I usually just use the treadmill or bikes, and also use the strengthening machines. I have no desire to lift! Mine is clean, and I did have a trainer work out a set of exercises for me based on what my goals were. I love the 30 minute workout zone and use that during lunch. I also LOVE the hydro massage. Mine doesn't have any signs I would think are "mean". Just about clothing choices and cleaning the machines after each use.
The only thing I miss from the YMCA that I used to belong to is the track. But it wasn't worth the extra $30 per month.

From everything that I have read i don't think it is the right place for me. I work out at a small, local gym that does classes and one on one training. When I started going in April of last year I was the fattest person there and I could barely make it through the warm up much less the entire hour class. And yet everybody, the trainers, the other people working out, was encouraging and supportive. I have been a regular attendee 3-4 days a week for 9 months now and have lost over 40 lbs. People I don't even know have come up to me and said, "we have watched you for the last year and you look amazing - keep up the good work." Not sure that would have been my experience at PF.

PF is perfect for me. Right now I only use the treadmill but I'm hoping to start doing some weight bearing exercise in the next month or so.

I wish there was a PF close to me. All the gyms around here are full of fit people who look at me like I'm a lazy slob. I could be imagining that because I don't feel good about myself but that's what it feels like. There is one gym in the next town that is open 24 hours and not expensive but my sister tried it out and she said it was dirty and had no air conditioning and poor ventilation so it was pretty gross.

I would love a PF or bigger type gym to come to the area as well for the same exact reasons you listed! I'm pretty sure I know the gym you mentioned. I had a membership to it and I always felt judged there and it was sooooo freaking hot in there. There is another gym that's close I wanna try that's supposedly open 24/7 (which is what I need) but I'm hesitant.

Through my health insurance, I am able to belong to more than one gym for a lower price than if I just joined any one gym directly. So - I am actually a member of three Gyms, plus the YMCA. We just recently joined a couple months ago, so I haven't been a member of any for long, but what I've seen is a variety of ages and sizes at all of them. (LA Fitness, Gold's, Gold's Express) BUT ... the person I really pay attention to is me - otherwise known as the slow girl on the treadmill or the one flailing around the pool in an attempt to swim. If anyone has taken notice of my awkward self I don't know. :-P What I'm saying is that I'm too busy being concerned about what I'm doing that I don't pay attention to what others are doing.

The only time I pay attention to other people at the gym is when they have the equipment I need next.

I don't go to the gym anymore, I work out at home, but you best believe I was comparing myself to everyone...and if you're on the treadmill next to me, YES, IT IS A RACE.
