Thanks for the tip lainey Attempts 2 and 3 I think I need a lighter coloured wool though - I'm struggling to see the chain You're off to a good start! From now on it's just a case of practicing. I finished a new project today. I love it! So cute for a baby's room.
I decided to get serious with my blocking, got some off cut wood and long nails. Most of my squares are quite square already, but I like that really neat look, so decided I may as well do it properly, just finished banging in the nails:
That's the final size of the squares and then I'll just do two rounds of the dark grey on each before I join them. I have about 80 more to do the final square row on. And I did cave and order the yarn for the Attic24 wavy afghan .

All those recent posts about crocheting gave me itchy fingers to get my hands into some wool again! I haven't crocheted anything since I was a kid, but I have knitted a lot in the past. I decided I'd make a granny square throw/afghan to hang over my couch. A really bright one won't go in my lounge as the colours are mainly white, grey/silver and accents of lilac, and as I'm in an apartment if the door is open you can see into the bedroom which is a sage green. Therefore I decided on those colours as a basis.
I looked online for some patterns and decided on the "circle inside a square" pattern like the Happy Flower Block Tutorial from this blog. I've done the inside circles for 120 squares:
and these were my tests for the progress and to get the sizes etc. I'm doing 3 rounds of circles, then 3 rounds of squares:
The same dark grey will go around the final edge of each one.
...and of course Angelique has been "helping":
I'm also seriously considering one of those Attic 24 wavy afghans for the bed once I finish this one. So who else has been sucked in to the hooking vortex? and what are you working on?
At 6 pages long, I had to open this thread and BAM! Instant memory. One sister made an afghan in green with that pattern for another sister. I think that may just be why I got her to teach me how to crochet so many years ago. It's a great pattern and one I don't think I've ever seen again. Beautiful choice! I totally get how it sucked you in to crochet again.

I am working on my fifth afghan of the winter. I have made two of the Attic 24 ripple afghans using three colors - they were easy and looked great. This weekend I started one that will have about a dozen colors. I'm currently adding the 7th color. It's going to be gorgeous. I had to Google. 3 seconds later and I've learned the best treatment of ends I've ever seen! I've read 2 posts so far into a 6 page thread that have me jumping for joy. I feel like a little kid who woke up one day to find it was Christmas morning and with a huge stack of presents to open!

So what will your first new project be? I've really been enjoying making my granny squares and will definitely have this finished in the next two weeks. It's been so long since I knitted or made anything in wool/yarn, and I've missed it. I also bought some wool that was on sale for the booties I posted a picture of.

Welcome to crochet corner, leftturnonly. You'll never leave! I am having such a lovely time crocheting and being able to share it with people is the best. I have recovered from my lurgy earlier in the week and am back on it with my 168-square blanket for our bed. It's the first double bed blanket I've made and it's pretty huge and a bit too warm to sit under. Currently have 50 squares joined. Will post pictures soon.

I need to stop looking at crochet on Pinterest. Now I want some of these:
or perhaps I can convince KelleeM to make me one of these:
at least the cat won't be able to chew it to bits like she does the other house plants (RIP) that I've had! Sadly I can't find the pattern, apparently it used to be free on Etsy but the designer (Purple Chair) has stopped posting on her blog and closed her Etsy shop

I love the African violets. I was looking at tutorials on You Tube the other day to make a leaf and I swear I saw that leaf that's used on that. And I'm betting finding a pattern for the flower would be simple! Here's a really simple tutorial for a leaf!!

I found this amazing photo... followed it back to this really cool site.... A Creative Being - Marinke (Wink)and when I went to the front page, I found out the poor girl killed herself last summer!

It's been a while since I've crocheted. Just been busy with other things, I guess. I got a book of Japanese sweater patterns that I was excited about (I've done a few of those before), but once it arrived I guess I wasn't as excited as I thought I was. One of these days. Your work is gorgeous. Do you share your patterns?

I'm crocheting bead ropes When you say you crochet these, does that mean you crochet the actual ropes with the little beads into them? That looks like pretty intricate work! I don't think I'd have the patience for those and they must take quite a long time to do.

Took me 3 hours just to do that. Then you crochet with a 1.5 mm hook. I've done 1m and it's taken me about 9 hours. one more meter to go.

I've done 1m and it's taken me about 9 hours. That's seriously impressive! I used to do some cross stitch patterns where some of the pattern included the tiny seed beads and that was time consuming enough just getting a few beads threaded, I can't even imagine doing this.

Would anyone be interested in a refupea group on Ravelry? I think it would be a great place to share projects and keep up with what everyone is working on. I would join it. I'm SLPeaJR on Ravelry. I've been knitting avidly for a little over a year, and I've recently been 'thinking' of attempting crochet. I even bought one of those little books at the grocery store checkout line-- it's all about crochet. I can chain, and have done a couple of simple projects using a crocheted provisional cast-on. However, my chaining skills are terrible-- I either make really tight chains or far too lose. It is just really awkward for me to manage the hook and the yarn tension. I suppose I could get it eventually-- I never thought I'd be able to knit and now I can. pjaye , your work is beautiful! I love the color combo. It's all in the left hand (if you're right-handed) and how you let the yarn glide through your fingers. You'll get to a point where you don't think about it, you just rely on muscle memory of what feels right.

Here's my first attempt at a granny square. I made a mistake or two in the first couple of rounds. All good practice though! I can see this is going to be addictive... Attachments:

SweetieBugs , gma08 - I could get a translation but not enough to find a pattern. No matter. I bet I could figure most of it out. Here's one that you can do if you can do a basic granny square. I believe the squares are worked with 2 different yarns together. The solid colors have two of the same color while the others are worked with two different colors together. link It says pattern to come.
