Lucy, what are your feelings about the Bullet Train? I like the idea of keeping up with technology and making our infrastructure 21st-century-worthy. Why? I suppose you know all kinds of horrifying things about it that I don't know. I am a supporter of the bullet train and do think it is worth the financial investment for California. kellybelly77 it scares me to hear what is going on in Kansas. Do you think there will be a political backlash in November?

There is a court date today regarding auditing those election results as a statsitican thinks the machines are hinky.
We are predictably, reliably red to our own detriment in Kansas. However, at the elections coming up there is speculation that some of the super right wing folks will be voted out for more moderate R's.

I keep up with it because independent study after independent study has shown it is a horribly bad fiscal idea for the state. The original cost that we voted on has already doubled and the first 100 miles of track between two places no one wants to go is already going up something like 300 million. The speeds won't be nearly as fast as they have quoted and with Southwest going between here and SoCal so many times a day and far cheaper than the train will be, it doesn't make sense. From all accounts the only people who still want it are Jerry Brown and the people who are going to get rich off of building it. Google a few articles and you will be horrified. People think it should be a good idea because of the bullet trains in Europe and Japan but CA is such a different animal that it makes no sense. I love technology too but I have hated this idea since day one. JMHO of course.

If he's taking all the money away from these programs and trying to get more money out of people, where is all the money going? He put a new tax plan into place. March to Zero! He wants Kansas to be income tax free. So the 1% get the biggest benefit, and on down. Business owners also pay no income tax. So, there is not enough money coming in to fund anything. In order to fund our state, he has had to cut programs, delay funding public employee pensions, cut money to schools, raise sales tax to 10% and raise sin taxes in order to just to fund the bare essentials in our state. In fact, our state has only created 6,000 jobs since this fiasco began well below the national average and dismal compared to our neighboring states. He promised that his tax plan would create 25,000 new jobs by this point, so he estimation is a wee bit off. Eyeroll.
And our economic growth is something like 9th lowest in the nation. When poor people pay more for everyday things, they don't have enough money to spend elsewhere. Imagine that.
With our state sales tax rate (which includes food) and our local sales tax rates, some counties in Kansas pay over 10% combined tax rate and have the highest tax rate on food in the nation. There are now caravans of people driving to neighboring states to buy food there where they charge no sales tax on food in order to be able to afford groceries.
Everyone knew this would happen but Sam Brownback believes the son is shining on Kansas. Honestly, he has his head so far buried up the Koch brothers a** he probably doesn't realize how bad off our state is.
Our schools will have to be shut down on June 30th of this year if he doesn't fund them according to the Kansas Supreme Court ruling the other day. Which adds $54 mil to our budget that will already be $200 mil in the hole come June 30th. But they spend their time making gay people second class citizens. F*ckers. Every single one of them.
Holy cow!!!! That guy is an idiot!! He's got all that info smacking him in the face and he's not going to change course!?!? I'm so sorry! Thank you for answering my question.

I'm sure there were those who said exactly the same thing about BART that it was a horrible fiscal idea for the Bay Area. Even with its problem imagine life in the Bay Area without BART today. Today as in past times any massive project like a bullet train will have cost overruns because it takes so long to get from the drawing board to the actual start of construction costs can't help but go up. But that doesn't mean the project should be scraped. It makes absolute sense to have a another option to get from SF/Silicon Valley to LA in a quick and efficient manner. You talk about how often Southwest flies between here an LA. Yea but getting to any of the three airports can be a pain. And don't forget how early you have to get there because of security. Add to that the flights cancelled because of bad weather here and elsewhere. It took me a while but I found out about the speed of the trains. That might be a problem but you know this train won't be operational for what a couple of years. Who knows what new technology will bring to the party. At some point Californians have got to get over this notion that one can drive anywhere because at some point there won't be enough roads to do all this driving on. That is why I think it's important the state invest in different forms of mass transit and I think in spite of the cost overruns and speed the bullet train is a good investment for California.

Well come on over to Michigan ladies. We poison our kids with lead in the water (and lie about it) and recently passed a law that once again makes sodomy illegal. Cause as you know, legislating sexual behavior is far more important than safe drinking water. We've reduced taxes for businesses and we now tax people's pensions. Your states are starting to sound better aren't they? Nothing like an asshat republican to lead the state into the bowels of hell. You forgot to mention anything about the failing Detroit Public Schools. Teachers staging sick outs to get some attention on the matter (which I am not blaming them for mind you), parents at the school staging sick outs for the kids on count day (I am still scratching my head on that one) and still the district is falling to pieces Democrats can take the credit for failing Detroit.

I love technology too but I have hated this idea since day one. JMHO of course. Back years ago there was a discussion to build a high speed rail here in Florida. It was put to a vote, and was made into a constitutional amendment. But later down the road, after many lawsuits and complaints, the whole thing was scrapped and denied funding. I wish I could remember all the details, but what I do remember thinking is how they (the powers that be) could stop it after it became a constitutionally amended item and then stopped? I always thought that if that were to happen, the people had to vote on to make it so? Personally, I was okay with the deal because it involved the I-4 corridor and the traffic is horrendous. They are constantly adding lanes and I think in many areas it is at least six and still bumper to bumper. I wish I could remember the whole thing because my guess the arguments are very much like what you guys are having in CA.

Well, at least they've arrested the top dogs in our State (NY). Sheldon Silver and his cronies had it coming for a long time.
A lot of people believe Cuomo (the governor) was involved in corruption along with Silver but I doubt anyone will ever go after him, even if he is invovled.

Welcome to what life is like in Illinois! I've always wondered how many other states suffer from horrible government and leadership HA! I was thinking the same thing. With all of the issues IL is facing, they have been able to determine the official pie of the state. (It's pumpkin.)
I like pumpkin - smothered with Cool Whip. So proud of our elected officials.

But really, is anyone happy with the goings on of their state? I can't think of anyone I know in any state who is happy about most things. Makes me scratch my head and wonder what the F is going on? Especially with how badly the schools everywhere (so it seems) are being massively screwed up. there are things in colorado that annoy me and decisions our governor has made that I would like to smack him for, but overall I am happy with my state. Before anyone asks, my two big issues with Hickenlooper are: His chickenshit approach to a criminal on death row His gun laws and the agenda with it

PA has set a new record for going the longest without a state budget. The governor is fighting with the House who are fighting with the Senate who are fighting with the Republicans who are fighting with the Democrats. Work is starting on next year's budget while nothing is being funded for this year. If I did my job this way I would be fired. And if my students fought and harassed each other the way these politicians do I would call their parents and put them in Time Out. It's disgusting.

I do know that both of my kids needed access to decent train service back home when they went to college (one in the south, one in the north), and there really wasn't any. I'd really like to see much better public transportation options in this state than we currently have ... I love visiting the East Coast and being able to grab a train in Boston or New Haven into New York, Philadelphia, or D.C. Flying isn't always the best choice. Isn't the first leg (Silicon Valley--->Bakersfield) supposed to open up soon?

Honestly we probably wouldn't have used it as we would have to rent a car when we got to our destination. We like the drive down 101 and 1 because we like to stop in Santa Barbara. It just worries me for our future generations having to pay for the massive cost because it will never run in the black.

flute4peace I believe the business exemption started two years ago. Check into it but you have to be an LLC maybe. I remember reading that lots of businesses reincorporated as the correct type to take advantage of the tax savings. There are currently 330,000 business owners exempted from paying income tax.

I am just no longer interested in whether it is dem or repub. I just want to get things fixed. I wish that we as a country could band together to fix our issues instead of being so divided by party lines. This is totally not meant as a hand slap, sorry if I am coming off that way. I guess I am just being a little too kumbaya (sp?)

An LLC never pays tax as it's a pass through entity. The LLC income is added to your personal income and you pay taxes through your personal income taxes. Not in Kansas - so are you saying they no longer have to claim K1 income on their state taxes?

Vent!!!! I live in Kansas. Home to Sam Brownback and his Tea Party utopia. With him at the helm our state is so screwed. The state is wrecked, our budget has been decimated with his disastrous tax plan, he threatened to defund our entire judicial branch if they didn't rule on a case in his favor and the other day our Supreme Court ruled that his new school financing plan is consistently underfunding schools. With all the problems we have to fix, you know what our Representatives decided to talk about today? Whether gay people should be labeled as a 3rd sex. And then, the Rep goes on to say that gay people are doomed in trying to lead a Christian life. Oh FFS! I can't even stand it anymore. This state is so f@cked. Preach! We moved here when Kathleen Sebelius was governor. I'm not saying she was perfect, but the state was in better shape back then. Now, it's a joke. I can't believe this man finds new ways to destroy the state.

I was just coming to post this, but you summed it up just right.

flute4peace I believe the business exemption started two years ago. Check into it but you have to be an LLC maybe. I remember reading that lots of businesses reincorporated as the correct type to take advantage of the tax savings. There are currently 330,000 business owners exempted from paying income tax. An LLC never pays tax as it's a pass through entity. The LLC income is added to your personal income and you pay taxes through your personal income taxes. Not in Kansas - so are you saying they no longer have to claim K1 income on their state taxes? Darcy, This is an article I found that explains the new law. I am not a business owner so I wasn't sure of the specifics!!
"New" Kansas Law: No State Income Tax to Pass-Through Entities
Ok, so maybe it’s not that new anymore (the law was signed on May 22, 2012, and effective as of January 1, 2013), but we think some of the effects are just now starting to be realized. The law eliminates Kansas individual income tax on business income earned in pass-through entities. This includes sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLC’s taxed as partnerships, and S-corps. So what are we seeing as recent effects of this law, and how can this benefit our clients?
For starters, we should first understand the change and why it’s relevant. Pass-through entities (see above) are generally not taxed at the entity/corporate level, as the non-wage income from the entity instead “passes through” to the individual tax return of the business owner. Because of that, the tax is reported and taxed under the individuals’ income tax return of the owner. The new law means that this Kansas income for these entities is no longer taxed, not even by the individual business owner.

How long has it been? Because we (IL) have also been without a budget since July 1st with nothing in sight, and our governor wad just yesterday talking about the next budget. Despite cutting a lot of services due to lack of budget, we have managed to spend more money than the budgets he vetoed. Very frustrating.
