Yikes, that gives me the creeps. A hoarder lives close to me. I won't go to her house or eat anything she has prepared.

When we moved after 26 years in our house we gave away about 30 boxes of books of all kinds. DH loves books but we now give regularly to Goodwill. I asked him what the point of keeping stuff that our kids don't want. What we treasure is not what they treasure nor want unless it is a family heirloom

When my parents died I had to go through the house that they had lived in for 47 years. It was a large house so stuff was not piled up, but it was full of junk. I had to hire the largest available dumpster and kept it for a month. It was filled to overflowing when they came to pick it up. For years I had tried to get my Mom to go through a drawer or two, but it never happened.

I remember one show on TLC (I think) that used to have a team come in and help hoarder(ish) people. They always put out three large sheets that were labeled Keep, Toss, and Give Away. The host gave them just seconds to look at something and then decide which pile. In the end, they ended up giving a lot of stuff away. There were so many memories for people they just had a hard time letting go. He (host) said that if you loved something enough to keep you should honor it enough to display it and not hide it. It seemed to be the tipping point for many families. When I purge, I bring in two large boxes labeled toss and give away and it does work. I don't leave the room until I am done with an area. I just don't get giving up all of my living space for things.
