Hi Ladies! I've been obsessively scouting Pinterest, but I figured I better check with the experts on here instead. I want to make three family recipe albums to give as gifts this christmas (mom, sis, sil). I want to put all of our favorite family holiday recipes in there. Trouble is, I just can't commit to a method/style/type I want to do. Have any of you made any recipe books you can share pictures/ideas with me? Thank you!!! Jenny

I haven't done it yet, but I have come up with a couple of possibilities on HOW I want to do it that I can share. As far as organizing the materials, I have a list of recipes I want to include, and I'm typing them all out in word. I want to add family photos, of grandmothers, aunts, uncles, kids, cooking in the kitchen, holiday or not, so I'm collecting those as well. I plan on asking my siblings for any family stories or memories revolving around a meal, recipe, or cooking in general to add here and there. My mom was an awesome cook and had some hilarious idiosyncrasies involving cooking, so I want to include those. As far as the album itself, I haven't decided which direction to go, but here are my options... The first idea is the traditional scrapbook, but maybe 8x8 size. print multiples of the photos, recipes, etc and make one as a prototype, then make the other 3 assembly line style, to hopefully minimize time, although I know this is the most time consuming option anyway. Second idea is a photo book type thing from an online place, but I've never done one of them and don't know how much text you can insert, so not sure if this is a realistic option. Third idea is digital scrapbook, which isn't my thing. I have zero experience with them, almost zero patience in learning new stuff, unfortunately, and while it will be cheaper (probably?) and much less time consuming, since I make it once and then have it printed as many times as needed, I just LIKE the textures of different papers and embellishments ( although this project wouldn't be heavily embellished) and real handwritten notes here and there, ya know? As far as the holiday theme and looking for ideas, maybe take a look at some December daily pages on the pinterest boards and elsewhere - there are several out there that include recipes so that could maybe give you some jumping off points.

Because of the duplication aspect of the project, I would personally lean toward digital for a project like that but I can totally understand if it's not something you would want to take on if you'd have to fight through the whole learning curve. That would be frustrating.
That said, I would definitely use a type of book with plastic page protectors to protect the recipe pages inside especially if you expect the books to be used as intended. Cooking is messy! 6x8 or 8x8 would be better than a larger size simply because it would take up less space on the counter when it's being used and would be easier to store when it's not. The advantage to some of the smaller books is that they have protector pages with 4x6 pockets as well, so the recipients could also get some of those refills to add standard recipe cards too.
I add my favorite holiday recipes to my December Daily albums knowing that someday DD will get them and then she'll have all of those recipes for herself. Whatever you do, it sounds like a fun project and a great gift!

Sounds like a wonderful project! I haven't made any to give as gifts so don't have any pics or detailed ideas to share, but have you thought of doing photobooks which would make the duplication easier? You could also include some blank pages or areas where the recipient could write her own notes. In terms of ease of use, maybe 8x8 or 6x8 would be the way to go?

Thank you everyone for the great ideas/input!!! I toyed a lot with the idea of doing them as photo books. I often use shutterfly/snapfish style books for quick scrapbooks of our vacations. I think in the long run it would be quicker, easier and cheaper (I could space it out a couple months and order with coupons, etc). But for some reason, I keep leaning back to the idea of paper crafting it…I think the allure of getting to play with holiday papers and buy a new collection to use is just too strong! I saw that scrapbook steals has 6 x 8 Snap albums for 6 bucks today, so I'm really thinking I might just order three and jump in! I love the idea of checking out some december daily pinterest boards for inspiration too. For some reason I was thinking every recipe needed a matching picture, but I think Justcindy had a great idea to include general family holiday photos throughout the years.

Rosered-Thank you so much for posting the link! I hadn't seen this collection yet, but it looks like a perfect addition to my recipe books! I was actually just thinking yesterday, that the one thing missing was what format/cards I would use for the recipes themselves. Now be patient for two more weeks...

I have actually made 4. One for each of my daughters. I used a 12x12 scrapbook. I made copies of pictures of my mother for each page. I started with the first picture I had of her(age 3) and got progressively older on each page. Each page also included a copy of Mama's hand written receipe for one of our favor dishes. I also included one receipe and picture of each great grandma. My children were so surprised that Christmas. They use their books all the time now that Mama has passed away and is not here to cook for us.

Hallmark sells recipe binders. In the past they have had a holiday themed one. I have used them to make recipe albums for gifts. You can fill some of the pockets with recipes (4x6 pockets) and use pretty papers, journaling, photos, etc. for other pockets. You can add as many pockets as it will hold.
