We usually grill it whole, then cut it. This pic shows what it looks like when we prepare it - gives a general idea of the size. I have slices in my fridge right now from our dinner Saturday night. It's one of my favorite meats

BEcause of previous threads on 2Ps about this, I have heard of tri-tip. However, it does not "exist" where I am, and I could not buy it if I tried. I had thought it was a mostly California thing, but I see others from other areas are familiar with it, too.

Btw, that pic was just one I found on google images but it looks just like what we make. We usually eat it the first night in slices with veggies. After that, I make sandwiches with it

AussieMeg..it's almost like a roast or brisket size.. thicker than a steak (well at least in the US..assuming your steak and my steak are the same...lol)
Those who grill it.. how long? low heat?

It's hard to find here. Usually I have to ask for that cut. It is a cheaper cut. It is flavorful and tastes like sirloin if cooked right

I think we cook ours a tad bit longer (dh doesn't like ANY pink) but I do.. so I leave a little bit of pink.. but that I would eat in a heartbeat.. YUMMY

I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Trader Joe's.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Trader Joe's. Yes, I got it at Trader Joe's once a year or so ago. They called it Tri-Tip Asada, I think. It was pretty delicious (surely not as good as what the OP had!).

From California and love it. I only buy it pre-marinated from Costco. There are usually 3 different brands and a couple different marinades. It varies from store to store. The one I have now in the refrigerator is Morton's. I find that brand consistently good.
I have not liked the ones that are not premarinated nearly as much so I only buy them from Costco.
And for reference it's $6.59 per pound and about a 3 pound cut of meat.

Dalai Mama, what chain have you seen it at? I've heard of it, but have never seen it in a store (at least by that name) Longo's has it - typically with the skirt and flank steaks. Ah, no Longo's here....I've also never seen a skirt steak...I'll have to check it out next time I'm up that way.

I can get it where I live. I just have to ask my butcher. It's called different things in different areas of the country.
We grill it on a hot grill to get a good sear on it but still pink in the middle, then we slice it in thin slices. It's fabulous with a mushroom gravy.

I live in Colorado and we buy our beef from a local guy in either half or quarter depending on how much we need. A tri-tip is always included. I have never looked for it in the grocery store.
